I was onboard from '85-'88. A-Gang. We rode out a helluvu typhoon leaving Hong Kong. At 22 years old it was a great experience and exciting but now at 55, so glad its only once in a lifetime. LOL. I never got sea sick but felt bad for the guys that did. I guess I was just lucky. In the video, I just saw MS1 Wilson in the galley, he cooked the best navy chow we ever ate....I'm disappointed that the Cochrane will not be a museum. But I have fond memories of her.

I remember it too...was onboard same time '1/86-11/88. GMM working on MK13 missile launcher! Typhoon Nina was a wild ride!! Cut that Hong Kong visit down to 2-days instead of 5-day; left behind about 1/4 of the crew as we sailed out of port before Nina hit. (ended up riding her out all the way to PI). 50% of the crew were puking (not me).

I too remember the typhoon, was onboard’85-88, 1st Lt. You could smell all the barf bags on the bridge and we’re grabbing to the overhead cable to hang on during those rolls. Eating crackers for our meals…fun times.

Thank you for your service! I was an FTG on USS Joseph Strauss DDG 16 during West-Pac deployments in 1970 and 1972. Transferred to USS John S. McCain DDG 36 (a converted DL) for the last 3 months of their 1972 deployment.

This ship is almost a duplicate of the ship I served on from 1980 to 1983. The USS Joseph Strauss DDG 16. The fastest Adams class at the time in the west pacific.

I'm sure this is a play on words and a slight brag! I served aboard Strauss from 70-72. Strauss was the same as every other Adams class destroyer. Two deployments aboard Strauss including a 70' deployment off the coast of South Vietnam and a 72' deployment that was spent mostly off the coast of North Vietnam. 3 years later aboard Benjamin Stoddert DDG 22 after the Vietnam War. In between I was aboard USS John S. McCain DDG 36, a converted DL. I love all of the Adams class destroyers. I spent several West-Pac tours right along with many of them.
