My favourite part of visiting the site is the walk to and from the entrance, usually seeing dozens of iguanas on the rocks and remains on the seaward side. The shame is that the beach (and presumably the mangroves) has so much rubbish accumulated on it. Back home we had a charity called "Beach Buddies", where volunteers would go and clear beaches (especially the ones away from towns and more scenic) - here would need a Beach Buddy Army to do the job!

A little more history on the place. When the US overthrew Noriega in December 1989, Panama Viejo was seized by a battalion from the US 82nd Airborne Division. The museum used to be the barracks site for Panama's Anti-Terrorist Special Security Unit (UESAT in Spanish) and about a company of Panamanian cavalry. Just to the east of the tower was the stables for the cavalry's horses.

The current city up until the 1960s grew right through Panama Viejo.

My family lived in Panama until 2 years after I was born in the late 60s. My mom always told me that Morgan destroyed the city. Back then, it was just the ruins and nothing else. It was a little of a wasteland, and you could climb on everything. And that's when I was told about Morgan. You could see in the inside walls round depressions. They were from cannon balls because Morgan brought the cannons from his boat to blow the walls from the inside out. That's how much he wanted to destroy the town.* And of course the Brits gave him the go ahead. A great number of pirates where Brits who worked for the Crown. There was no gold in British colonies, and the only way to get any was to steal it from Spain. Having her royalness' military do it would be an act of war, but having these mercenaries of the sea take charge of it was quite the comfortable arrangement for the crown. * having been born in Panama City, I don't drink Capt. Morgan for obvious reasons 😊

Did you know that the Governor of Panama, Don Sebastian Hurtado Corcuera took the Genoese colonists of Panama and Genoese are Italians famous for starting the First Crusade, supporting the Spanish Reconquista against the Caliphate of Cordoba, supported the Spanish conquest of Muslim Sicily, and had colonized Panama, used Panamanians and Peruvians in the Christian conquest of Muslim Zamboanga? Also the coconuts of Panama came from the Philippines, according to genetic studies is Precolombian and PreSpanish. Panama and Philippines also used to be American colonies too.
