I learned two new things about this machine that I've had for almost 40 years. 1- I didn't know about the twin needle stitching. Seriously, didn't even know that was a thing and I've been sewing since I was a kid. And 2- I didn't know about the other plate to hide the feed dogs. I inherited this machine from my grandmother, and to my knowledge, it never had one. Thanks for doing this video! I've been looking for information on how to repair and maintain it for ages, so I'll be checking out some of your other videos!

So kind of you to comment, Chrystine, thank you. I'm glad you found my channel. One Family machines are wonderful to own b/c they usually are in decent shape and the recipient gets a nice machine with memories. I also have a playlist for model 513, the next generation of your machine. It has some additional adjusting type videos if you ever need that; kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKLELksv_-MWE7tiAuzOgQj0 The only weak spot on your machine is the plastic top gear on the vertical shaft. It is fairly common that the plastic gets brittle from age and heat and starts to break apart. Keeping the top bearing well oiled helps prevent that (no oil on gears) I had so many emails about the gear problem on the handful of models with that gear that I finally did a video showing how to replace it for $10 and a couple hours of time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU Hopefully yours is in good shape and you won't need to replace it. Information on the twin-needle and where to oil is in your INstruction Manual. If you need a copy you can download it for FREE from SInger at this link; www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 Welcome to Andy Tube and thanks for the Sub. I just revisited this as I was given a 413K by my mother-in - Law, she was a confident sewist and is a great help when I’m struggling with some aspect of clothes making. She bought hers in the early 70’s one of the plastic gears gave out on me and I was able to replace it that is to your videos.I was confused by the Flexi Stitch Which you have cleared up for me I think this is an underrated machine. MIL sewed at least two sets of bridesmaid dresses on it an numerous other projects. Thanks Andy the worldwide army of DIY sewing repairers owes you a lot.

Very welcome, Tony. Thanks for saving the machines. I very much agree about being underrated. The 400 models, like 413, 416, 418, 457 that have that plastic gear have a bad rep b/c of the gear breaking. Think about that for a moment and remember the machines are 50 years old. That gear lasted 30 to 45 years before giving out. I wonder how many modern sewing machines will still be working at that age. For about $30 you can replace the gear and both belts and be sewing for a couple more decades easily. A strong versatile metal machine. Happy sewing, Tony, and thanks for the very nice comment.🙏

They are fun little machines that can do most household and clothes sewing as long as the gears (plastic) are not damaged. It's the model a couple years before the 513, and fancier than the 457 I did. The gears can be replaced and the parts are only $10, but the labor cost is prohibitive at most repair shops if they will even do it. Always make sure the feed dog and hook move before you buy one. If not it's a sure sign the top gear on the vertical shaft is broken. Thanks for watching.
@tdennis21846 жыл бұрын
I have this 413 machine. It was my mom's. I started a project and have run into some difficulties. The last being - I was sewing a straight stitch and when I used the reverse button It made a noise and the needle stopped. I am wondering if the top gear is broken? I have looked at a few of the other videos and removed the end plate and the belt is intact and looks good. I removed the bottom plate and small pieces of hard black plastic were seen. ( Not Good!) Removed the top cover. It's hard to see under, what I am guessing is the top gear, it does appear to be missing "teeth". I ran my finger under it and it does not feel uniform. It is black. If the top gear on the vertical shaft is broken, can the part be bought? Can I replace it? Went looking for parts and found "Vertical Top Shaft Gear, Singer #155819" under $10.00. Is there a how-to video on replacing the top gear? A repair manual/parts manual? Your answer is appreciated. I live near Austin and there is a sewing center that repairs sewing machines.
@andytubesewing19536 жыл бұрын
The sounds and symptoms you describe are classic top gear failure. You can change the gear as thousands of others have. If your broken gear is black that means it was a replacement gear. I prefer the white gear as I think it lasts longer. DO NOT put any grease or oil on it. Here is the replacement procedure: www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/457gear/ Here is where I bought my last one, but many others sell it too: www.ebay.com/itm/Singer-Sewing-Machine-Vertical-Top-Shaft-Gear-155819/321096479088?hash=item4ac2d77170:g:RgEAAMXQLehR7MD0:sc:USPSFirstClass!85281!US!-1 Good Luck, and thanks for watching Andy Tube.

Here are my model 413 videos although I do not have one just for removing the motor: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8 Your 413 has an SN(K) OPEN motor like many models do. I have some other videos about that type of motor showing removing and replacing, cleaning, setting the motor brushes, etc. REMOVAL: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWPXiZyfjd1qadE INSTALL: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqfElKSraZlgo9E CLEAN: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKqUdoFriJemsJY RESEAT MOTOR BRUSHES: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKG3qpJ4r5ijqKM I will say that unless the motor got covered in oil that the "funky" smell is usually from an old motor belt running at high speed. The dried-out rubber flakes get hot and can even smoke a little going around the motor pulley. You can pull the belt off of the motor pulley (videos) and just run the motor and see if it is actually the source of the smell. I have recovered used motor belts for temporary use until buying a new one by soaking them well with alcohol and using a small wire detail brush or even a toothbrush or nylon scrubby to get the old flakes off and make the belt a little flexible. If you need the Instruction Manual for model 413 you can download a free PDF copy directly from SInger (safely) at this link to their support page: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 I hope this info will get you started, Sharon, and you know where to find me now. I'll start with the link to all my videos for model 413: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8 The videos include setting the timing and even replacing the timing belt. They may give some insight into how the parts work and should move. My concern is your model is in a group known to have top gear failure at the age it is. The gear is on top of the vertical shaft that goes down to power the timing belt which makes the hook rotate. It is known to crumble, have teeth crack off, get stuck and even completely fall apart. I suggest you look into the top of the machine, locate the gear and see how it looks. A new gear is only $5.00 Example = www.ebay.com/itm/166073814150 You can find videos instructing about gear replacement. Example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGSviYyffruopa8 Mr. Fowler does a good job with that. I have older videos in a model 466 playlist about replacing the gear: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJTjJ3dRTrDPtIqR6DMoaex It is a similar model and may give views the Fowler's video does not. (maybe) A new gear should last 20 to 30 years. It is a worthy machine and is versatile for home sewing. Good Luck, thanks for asking, and thanks for watching my channel.

@@rndea100 you must mean it hits the bobbin case, not the bobbin right? So you can go to singer and download free copy of the instruction manual that explains all the controls on the machine and what you can and can't do and how to set up zigzag and so forth. So the first thing to do is be sure that you are setting properly for what you're trying to do then if that fails and you still have the same problem now you're looking at adjusting the left center right? We have the same machine, the bobbin holder is not moving. Removed the bottom panel and time belt is not moving, discovered a gap between the gears connecting the time belt and the hand wheel. Everything else continues to work except for the bobbing holder/time belt below the machine, how can I fix this? We found a broken portion of a plastic gear-like piece that is similar in size to the gap between the time belt and hand wheel gear, is it possible to find an existing piece? If so, where could we buy one?

One question: is it possible to do “free” stitching like quilting? From what I’ve gathered from other videos the only requirement is having a retractable feed dog so you can manually move fabric in directions/curves if users choice as they sew. Hope that makes sense. Thanks!! and here is my answer: • 4 days ago In older vintage models you could lower or "drop" the feed dog. By the time your 413/416/418 was made, they changed to a FEED COVER THROAT PLATE that replaces the regular throat plate (needle plate) when you want to embroider or free motion show. Well, this was the only 413 I worked on and it had no problems. In general, I can say these types of push-button feed controls have a few springs in them. An example would be when you push the button and let go it pops back out. Other springs shown in the parts manual look like they actually move the feed regulator for forward/reverse. If those springs broke or came off that may have left the regulator set to reverse. There is no special service model for model 413 b/c it's a "little sister" model to the 416/418 more advanced models. I do have that service manual and the parts manual for the 413 if you want to drop an email to Alan at andymanuals53@gmail.com and ask him for those specific manuals I'll have him reply with the PDF copies for no charge. Congratulations on your acquisition. I have a couple videos showing the removal & replacement of the presser bar on a model 513. It has a presser bar system similar to yours. Andy. Our 413 is birdnesting like crazy. I watch the needle thread get picked up by the hook, it travels around and seems to hang up on the bobbin holder, the piece that has short swing to hold the bobbin. Then next time around it gets stuck under. I am pretty sure I have timing set correctly. Needle in proper, bobbin tension set. Top tension set, have tried from 1 to 6 all the same issue. Ideas?
@BillWhetstone Жыл бұрын
Maybe easier way of expressing. The hook ppulls the thread around to just past 6 oclock position, when it releases, it is hanging on the spring the holds bobbin in place. Could it be timing? too far advanced? I followed the timing instructions closely, so I think timing is right.
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
@@BillWhetstone No, not timing. When the needle thread "casts off" the hook point at 6 o'clock it should pass thru a "gap" between the heel of the bobbin case (bottom right-hand corner) and the spring. It's called the "Thread Cleance" and on your model (413) the gap should be between .012 to .018 inches. If the gap is too narrow the needle thread hangs or can stop there and every following hook pass just hangs or stops the thread. Directly to the right of the spring is the bracket itself and the bottom screw is the adjustment screw. You need a feeler gauge and you may need to loosen (slightly) the two smaller screws above the adjustment screw, the bigger lower screw turns to move the spring closer or farther from the case. That screw is eccentric I think and the adjustment is very small. Each machine is different due to age. My machine might work best at .011 and yours at .014. If the gap is too wide the bobbin case bangs back and forth from the spring to the hook race and is very loud and the case can even jump off the race. YOu see what happens when it's too narrow. If you'd like the page from the service manual (PDF) for testing and adjusting the gap email to andymanuals53@gmail.com and ask Alan for the 413 thread gap page. No Charge. If you think I'm on the wrong track then send Alan a picture and he will get it to me. Good Luck, and thanks for saving that machine.

Thank you for the email, you figured out solution to what I was seeing. The thread gap was too small, hanging the thread. The machine is now sewing correctly. @andytubesewing19533 жыл бұрын
Welcome to Andy Tube, Pamela. It sounds like your original needle "strike" caused the machine to lose the Timing between the Needle and Hook, and the needle is now hitting part of the hook base. Fairly common and you can fix this. Either the needle bar slipped, or the timing belt slipped. (or even both) Rarely you may have bent the needle bar itself. I have a playlist of videos for model 413 that you can find here: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8 One of the videos in that list is how to check and set the timing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnKxqpZ6bpWqh8k You can check the timing without making any changes on the machine so you do that first. If the timing is lost then you can correct it. The video shows you exactly how to do all that. The video now has 90,000+ views so you can tell this happens quite often. Good luck, and hope you come back for a visit someday.

Hello Andy, Excellent video on this machine. I got one from my friend recently. I thougth to give a try by stitching some cloths. I realized that the feed dogs are not pulling the fabric, I see the feed dogs are coming up and down. but for some reason its not pulling the fabric. I really don't know what to look for to fix it. Otherwise the machine look great.
@andytubesewing19532 жыл бұрын
That sounds like the feed is set in a "neutral" position instead of normal forward. The FLEXI dial should be set to zero, the stitch width dial set to zero the stitch length dial set to about 12 for a medium-long stitch, and the, needle position lever should be set to "C" for center. That is the correct setting for straight stitch sewing. Try it. If the dog is still just going up and down then the reverse feed button/parts may be stuck. Some of the parts are plastic and dust/dirt in them can make them stick. Try pushing and letting go of the reverse button several times to see if the feed movement changes. If you do not see the dog change direction then it's stuck. You can remove covers and try cleaning, or heat the parts with a heat gun or hairdryer. Someone may have been trying to adjust the height of the feed dog and made an error. The adjustment screw is elliptical and if they faced it the wrong way it won't move the feed lift bar properly. You can download a free copy of the Instruction Manual from SInger at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 You can also buy and download a copy of the Service Manual at this other link: store.tandtrepair.com/413sm.html The Service Manual should cover every adjustment and repair on the machines, including removing and replacing many parts. Your videos are very helpful, I changed the top gear and set the timing as your instructions and ordered a new bobin case (of metal) for my singer 413. I have a problem, after having set the timing, the hook catches the thread but the thread gets stuck between the bobin case and the metal plate around it (with 3 screws). I tried to give some gap in between (by loosing the screws) but the thread still gets stuck. Also the bobin case (part number 172082-8) is very noisy. Please I need some help. Thank you very much!
@andytubesewing19535 жыл бұрын
so a small bundle of problems at first congratulations on replacing the gear keep in mind it may not be the correct bobbin case and also that you must oil the bobbin case where it sits on the little shelf of the hook and rides there that little shelf is called the race and must be oiled on top of that usually a bobbin case and hook wear a pattern of use together over the years so you have your original hook and you've added somebody else's bobbin case and they may need to break in to each other so to speak oiling will help though. The little space between the edge of the bobbin case and the bobbin case bracket cushioning spring is called the thread clearance gap and must be set to the correct space if the gap is too narrow the thread can get stuck and hang up there if the gap is too wide the thread can pop out and also the bobbin case will bounce back and forth against that spring and be very noisy on most vintage singers the Gap is someplace between point 012 and 018 inches depending on the particular model number here is a link to a video of a different model but it shows how to set that gap I realize the bobbin case bracket is slightly different but I want you to get the idea of how to do it so take a look at this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGrEiJyKj85nrZY if you would like to have instructions on your exact model you may go to manuals on CD.com and search for your singer model I believe that they will sell you a PDF copy of the original Singer service manual for under $10 you can download it as soon as you pay for it and it should have a section on exactly how to set the gap on the thread clearance between the bobbin case and the cushioning spring.

I have this model 413 and it's sewing backwardness do I do?
@andytubesewing19533 жыл бұрын
Normally you push and hold in the Stitch Control Dial to make the machine sew in reverse. That is the large "knob" with the numbers on it. The parts inside move the Feed Regulator to change the direction of the feed dog. Is the knob stuck "in"? There are usually a couple of springs inside that give resistance when you push and then force the knob back out when you let it go. You may have a broken spring or one came loose. The Feed Regulator may be stuck onto the slide block it moves on. It's a 50-year-old machine now, and who knows when or even if the machine was ever serviced. The parts may need a little oil to get moving properly. You can take off the top and bottom covers and even the faceplate to see the parts moving and you may be able to oil them without removing other parts. Here is a video of a similar push-button feed regulator and slide block. It's on a different model, but the parts may be like yours. If you start at 12:25 in the video you can see I point out the parts and you'll see the springs I'm talking about. kzbin.info/www/bejne/moqyqWSLbKimaJY Also, one time on a 513 I released stuck parts by just pushing harder and harder on the knob and releasing it, with fast motions, and the knob moved out about 1/4" and then the machine sewed normally. Some of the parts are plastic and I think sometimes they get stuck from dust, temperature change, etc. One viewer said she used a hairdryer to release a stuck button. (heat and airflow) BTW, you can download the instruction manual from SInger for free at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413

@andytubesewing19535 жыл бұрын
Aimee, I'm sorry to say I think it is a broken/damaged gear on top of the vertical shaft. It powers the vertical shaft that supplies power down to the hook and bobbin area. The gear is plastic and is at an age where it has become very brittle. There is a handful of models that are known to have this problem and I get many emails about it so I finally made a video about it and how to change the gear out. It only costs about $10 or less for the gear and the video is a step-by-step tutorial so almost anyone can do the work that shops charge a lot of money for. Of course, I'm surmising this is the problem as I can't see the machine itself. Watch a little of the video and look inside your mache to get a look at your gear. Here is the video; kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU Don't let the length of the video bother you as you can watch it at speeds up to 200% of normal. After changing the gear you must reset the timing and the video includes instructions for that. Thanks for watching my channel, and good luck.

Welcome to Andy Tube. Sorry you are having a problem. Is your model the 413? By only your comment and not being able to see or touch your machine, it is difficult to isolate the problem and recommend a fix. When you mention bobbin thread I always think of a timing issue. The timing belt can slip by a small amount and timing is affected or lost. Here is a video about the timing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnKxqpZ6bpWqh8k The 413 model also has a plastic top gear on the vertical shaft that is prone to crack and break with age. When the gear starts to break the stitching gets all weird and finally, the hook won't even turn. You can buy a gear for $10 and replace it your self. This slideshow indicates where the new gear was installed so you know where to look on your machine to see if yours is damaged. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5CYaZqOpL-koKM the gear is between 0:12 to 0: 32 You can get free instructions for gear replacement here: www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/457gear/ As I mentioned, these are the most common things but it could be something totally different. You have to start somewhere when isolating trouble, so you could watch the video, slideshow and see what you think. Good Luck.

My Singer Stylist model 413 is stuck in reverse. Can you help me fix it for myself, please?
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
You can't just turn the machine around and sew left-handed? 😂 The manual for model 413 does a poor job of showing where to oil the machine, IMO. I made a video to show how to oil it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqOxmZKfltZ3g68 Please pay special attention to the forked feed connection area I show at 10:47 in the video. When you push the reverse button it moves a lever against the feed regulator attached to that forked feed. There are sliding parts that may be stuck at that point. If that does not release the machine from reverse you can watch this motor belt video to see how to remove the motor cover plate. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH-vfZaVbrmjnrc With that off you can see the parts behind the reverse push button and the lever I mean. Cleaning it with alcohol may help if the plastic is dirty and stuck. I usually don't advise oiling plastic, but you may need to put a little oil on those parts if they are sticking. There is a return spring to keep the reverse button pushed out, but the feed regulator may be so dry it can not slide and that is preventing the spring from releasing the button back out to go in normal forward sewing. If all this fails you can buy a service manual online that shows how to remove those parts for cleaning, adjusting, or replacing. I hope that is not needed, but if so here is where to buy the manual: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-416-418-sewing-machine-service-manual/ The manual is for the fancier model 416, but the parts inside are the same. Good Luck.

Andy, I found the plastic bobbin case for this model is chipped at the bottom where the bobbin sits and I’m guessing that’s why my stitches can’t get right. I ordered a replacement from Central Michigan but it doesn’t fit. I emailed them today to see if I can return it for a refund. You can see from the underside where it’s molded differently. I’ve looked everywhere else and I just can’t find that particular bobbin case. Sewing parts online shows they don’t have it available either. The part number CM sent me seems to be the same ones on eBay, from China. Do you know of anywhere else that this may be found? I’m seeing in this video, the machine has a metal one. I’ll take whatever I can get that fits, lol. Thanks

The original SInger Parts Manual for Model 413 shows the complete bobbin case to be part #172082-7. www.ebay.com/itm/154930116407 Many people believe that parts 172082-8 will also work on your machine: www.amazon.com/evernice-Bobbin-Bobbins-172082-Singer/dp/B07LB2Q659

Is it all metal gears and linkages inside?
@andytubesewing19535 жыл бұрын
NOPE! It is a strong machine although it has a weak link in the vertical shaft top gear. It is plastic, darn it. If it has not broken yet, it soon will IMO. On the bottom are two metal pulleys and a belt to drive the hook. There is also a motor belt. You can download a FREE copy of the part diagram here >> parts.singerco.com/CPpartCharts/4_4999/413K.pdf See that gear No. 155819 on top of the vertical shaft? That is the culprit. The good news is you can buy a new one for around $10. I even made a video about how to change that type of gear >> kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU If you really want an all metal machine take a look at 301A, 401A, 403A, 404 and the Rocketeers 500A & 503A. All metal gears, no belts. Most of these you can see on my playlist page here>> kzbin.info/door/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4wplaylists?view_as=public Before the emails start let me say there are other all-metal machines as well as many other brands. Hey Andy, it’s me again. On my singer stylist 834 when using the flexi stitch option, the machine goes in reverse. Any idea where to start looking for the problem. Happy Easter!
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
That's odd! When researching flexi-stitch problems in the past they have all been user errors where the dials and levers were not set correctly. A common problem was people forgetting to put the machine in straight stitch before engaging flexi sewing, just as one example. Another was not setting the width to the red bar. I'd start by testing for normal reverse when using straight stitch to test the reverse button function. If that's good and not stuck (fails to release for forward sewing) then I'd review the Instruction Manual for proper settings of flexi-stitch sewing. For anyone needing the manual, it is still free from Singer as a PDF download on their Support Page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=834
@rhondamercado7527 Жыл бұрын
@@andytubesewing1953 thanks Andy, these manuals are a lot clearer,no watermarks, to cover important information up. Yes, the reverse works fine so it’s probably in my setting the other dials incorrectly. I can’t put my hands back on a video I was watching the other day where a gentleman showed where a tiny washer sits on the shaft up top and sure enough when I looked at mine it was sitting broken and lose up there. He showed how he cut some off so he could just slip it on there vs a bigger job of removing all those parts that I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to handle, lol. It fills a tiny gap but I’m not sure if that has anything to do with the reverse but I’m sure it sits there for some reason. Anyway, I’ve got something to tinker with, thanks again for providing that manual link. UPDATE. It’s called a shaft washer, I found it on sewing parts online. I wonder if Lowes has something comparable. I have a piece I can take with me.

Hi Andy, I am a real "fan" of your very informative videos. After watching this one on the 413, my question is, in your humble opinion, (and if you were interested in investing in a solid, built to last machine), which machine would be the best--the 457 or the 413? I use my machine for garment construction, making quilts, mending, doll clothes, etc. I learned to sew on a 457 (years ago!), and have been looking for a 457, but now I have an opportunity to purchase a 413. After watching this video, I am wondering which machine would be the best investment...? Any problems in either machine that you would care to caution me about...? I have spent a great deal of time, especially in the last few months of "sequestering" watching your GREAT videos. I have learned so-oo much. Thanks again, and looking forward to your answers, and the next series of videos from you. Shari
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
If those were my only choices, I would choose the 413 I think. You mention sewing clothing, and I think you would enjoy having the Flexi-stitch feature. Otherwise, they are mechanically the same for the most part other than the bobbin winder systems and stitch controls. They both have a motor belt and a timing belt and use the same basic motor. They are both straight shank and use low shank Singer feet. One came with snap-on feet and one clamp on, but that is interchangeable between the models. Some do not care for the snap-on and find vintage clamp-on feet to buy and vice-versa. They both can use all of the same attachments and accessories, like the buttonholer. kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKIVBGEISHzZeWVk8-IxpHw0 Both models have the same weak spot too, which is the plastic gear on the vertical shaft. If the machine you buy has not had that gear replaced, then it will be broken when you buy it or shortly after you start using the machine. That gear is 40+ years old and gets dry, brittle and the teeth crack off or the whole gear breaks. No kidding. It is so common for machines of that decade that I made a video about replacing the gear. It has been viewed 37,000 times which shows how common the broken gear is. Maybe you saw it? kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU Both the 413 and the 457 have the same gear and you see it can be replaced for about $10 and your labor. When you go to look at the machine please be sure the hook rotates. I take a screwdriver and flashlight with me and ask permission to look under the covers. Two screws and the top arm cover comes off and I can spy down to see that gear with a flashlight. If even one tooth is chipped it is on the road to destruction. If the hook does not rotate even though the machine is in bobbin winding mode then you know the gear is shot. Sometimes you can remove the bottom plate and the gear pieces are laying around on the oil drip pan. Often people who are selling it got it from a family member's estate and don't really sew. They can turn on the motor and see the needle go up and down and tell you the machine "works" but when I can show them a broken or damaged gear I have often brought home the machine for $10 or $15. When new the machine cost about $1000 in today's dollars.👀 Both machines use the clamshell-style foot controller which can be used on the floor or mounted under the cabinet and used with a kneebar to control it. Both machines can be mounted in several models of a Singer Cabinet. The belts (together) cost about $25 to $40 to replace and you can easily do that when needed. (my videos) The vintage carbon motor brushes last a long, long time but if they need replacement they cost about $15 and you can do that too! The machine is easy to clean and lubricate and can sew for 75 to 100 (more) years if kept cleaned and oiled. You can go to the Singer support page and enter the model number (almost every model number works) and download the Instruction Manuals for the two models to compare features and see some of the feet and accessories if you want a little more info. www.singer.com/support So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it, Shari 🙂 Thanks for your interest in a vintage Singer machine and for watching my channel. Best of luck.

Hey hope you are doing okay. What type of needles would be good to use for this model? Please assist
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
Model 413 uses a type of needle called 15x1, one of the most common in the world. Walmart, Joanns, Amazon, eBay, fabric stores, craft stores, etc. It takes sizes of needle 9, 11, 14, 16 & 18. The machine can even twin-needle sew using STYLE 2028 twin needles in sizes 11, 14 & 16, in straight or zigzag. A versatile and strong machine. If you'd like more info for this model you can download a FREE copy of the original 64-page Instruction Manual directly from Singer in PDF format: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 The manual explains all the features of the machine and how to maintain it and includes a chart of which needle and thread to use based on fabric, vinyl, denim, sailcloth, upholstery, leather and also includes professional sewing techniques. After seeing your other video on the Apollo Bobbin, my garage sale 413 has an F bracket instead of the Position Bracket for the metal bobbin case. It is an after-market conversion or did Singer change the bobbin system on later models?
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
I have restored a half dozen of this model and they were all as shown in my video. However, the free copy of the Instruction Manual available from Singer here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 does show the Apollo Style Bobbin case. It was printed in Great Britain in 1971. I also have the Parts diagram/list (no place or date of publication) that shows both bobbin case and bracket styles. The diagram with the Apollo case/L-Bracket is identified with K13. I'm guessing there were two original versions, 413 US and 413K GB, or they did later move to the Apollo Style, which is a later style than the metal case. No way to verify any of that though. The K designation is for the factory in Kilbowie, Scotland.

You can go here and download a FREE copy of the instruction manual for model 413: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20413%20Stylist%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf On page 10 of the manual is a chart showing which needles ( and thread) are best for the machine. In addition to the ones listed there are now also specialty needles for jeans, leather, metal threads, etc. The import part to remember is style 15x1 needles in sizes 9, 11, 14, 16 and 18 if it's for woven fabric, knit fabric, leather, denim and so forth. That is just what the point is like and how thick the shank is. Almost and 15x1 style or type of needle in those sizes will work on your 413. Back in the day, Singer called them style 2020 for sharp point woven material and 2025 for ballpoint and knit material. Don't forget that your machine can "Twin-needle" sew and takes a special style 2028 twin needle. Thanks for watching Andy Tube.

@andytubesewing19536 жыл бұрын
Hello, Darling (hehe) ... Thanks for asking. The 416 can use a true twin needle (not two single needles) I have not seen a twin leather needle. There are many sellers of a low-shank walking foot that fits the 416 Singer. Here is one example, but please shop around >> www.sewingpartsonline.com/low-shank-walking-foot-singer-423242-451.aspx The Singer twin needle was category 2028 but now many manufacturers make twin needles in various sizes. Leather needles were category 2032 and again, many manufacturers make them. I have sewn with a size 11 twin needle on leather one time and it worked OK but since it was not a leather needle (knife or wedge point) it got dull sooner than normal. The Original Singer Instruction Manual for Model 416 has a nice chart on page 12 showing Fabric to Thread to Needle choices, including garment leather like suede and lined leather for gloves, etc. On page 33 & 34 are instructions for twin-needle sewing. Great series. I recently purchased a 413 and have completely restored it per this video series. Thank you! Quick question: Is it normal for the pattern selector dial to rotate during sewing???
@andytubesewing19535 жыл бұрын
Hi, Bill. I'm glad you found the series and it was useful to you. Thanks for that. I don't think the dial should be moving at all. On the cover plate, just above the dial is a vertical hash mark that tells you what length you set the dial to. If the dial rotates then how would you know the true length setting? That dial must be pushing/pulling a rod to the feed regulator to control how far the feed dog moves. If it is rotating on its own there must be something lose I'm thinking, like a bracket that mounts it to the frame or something? Here is the parts diagram for the 413: parts.singerco.com/CPpartCharts/4_4999/413K.pdf If you need a service manual email me (address on my "ABOUT" page) I have one for the 416-418 model which is a little different but may help. @@andytubesewing1953 Thanks for responding!!! To clarify, it's the PATTERN SELECTOR (white horizontal dial) that is revolving. It appears to be connected to a horizontal worm gear that constantly moves. Should the PATTERN SELECTOR dial revolve as the machine sews? It just surprises me.
@UniversalEngineer5 жыл бұрын
Apologies for the multiple emails. The PATTERN SELECTOR dial that I'm talking about is 153298-451 and the gear that it appears to ride upon is 102428 (per the 2nd sheet of your parts diagram). I just need to know if this constant revolving is normal. THANKS AGAIN!
@andytubesewing19535 жыл бұрын
Oops! My bad, Bill. I misunderstood. It is normal for the pattern selector to rotate around with the camstack with the machine is running. Take a look at this video for model 457 starting at 2:20 where I talk about the selection wheel or dial. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5incpiGpdadjZI That little dark spring on top of the dial/wheel pops in and out of two depressions in the dial that hold your setting in place, When you move the dial it raises or lowers a cam follower to a pattern cam. That's how it makes the pattern you selected. The cam rotates with the worm gear on the horizontal shaft and the follower, connected to the needle bar vibrating arm, follows that pattern cam and moves the needle back and forth to make the pattern. Because the camstack, pattern cams, and selector dial are all connected together, they all rotate together. Notice there is no marking on the dial itself? It does not matter because moving the dial slightly left or right moves the spring into one or the other of the depressions and raises or lowers that follower no matter where the dial has rotated while running. Thanks for your patience, Bill. Take Care.
