I love how the tension discs are external, it's just so cool to see the working parts of the machine. I'm also so fascinated how much of the top thread is external to the machine! It's so cool to see! I can't wait to try out my 413- my singer promise is being naughty so it's been sent to go sit in the corner
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
Hmm... another broken promise, eh? The only weak spot on the 413 is the plastic gear on top of the vertical shaft. It's 50+ years only now and gets brittle. A new gear is only about $10 and you can do the replacement yourself. Otherwise, it's a strong, capable machine and with normal care and oiling can last another 50 years easily.

Hello, Andy! I wanna thank you so much for this video! I inherited a singer 418 that belonged to my beloved grandma. I grew up watching her spend days using this machine and creating the most beautiful items of clothing, etc. Now that she is not around anymore, I had no one to remind me of how to work this out. I'm so grateful for your video! So so so helpful. Best wishes! :)

Family machines are just the best to own. I love that you have your grandma's 418. I'll bet that machine could almost sew by itself after all the love she gave it and the creativity she expressed when sewing. I'm happy the video gave you a reminder of setting it up. I know that Instruction Manuals often do not get passed on with a machine, but you can still get one if you need it. They have tons of information and I can just imagine grandma reading thru it and learning how to use the machine to the best of its capabilities. @@andytubesewing1953 Hi Andy, I have started sewing with the machine and straight stitching absolutely no problems but when I do Zig zag I am getting drop stitches. How do I trouble shoot it? Followed your timing video but everything seems to be right.
@andytubesewing19538 ай бұрын
@@yxyc87 Yes, the first thing we think of is timing, but other things can affect ZZ stitching. I always replace the needle first. Even a slight bend in the needle can cause it. It can still work for Straight Stitching, but make the "thread loop" out of reach for the ZZ needle position. Also, be sure you are using LESS needle thread tension when you sew ZZ, especially the wider settings. The swinging needle already is putting tension on the thread. Let's say you normally use 3 or 4 for straight, then try 2.5 to 2 for ZZ and even less if needed. There is a slight possibility that the "Stroke" of the take-up spring (check spring) is off. Usually not, but if someone worked on the tension assembly it could be off. Here is a video explaining the Stroke of the take-up spring. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmS4oq2Ph9RgmcU I don't want you going down rabbit holes, so always check closely any setting before you decide it needs adjusting. I've had a number of viewers tell me they checked timing so then we tried needles, stroke, thread & needle size, different fabrics, etc. Lots of time was spent and nothing fixed it. When I convinced them to at least check the timing one more time very closely they admitted they found it to be off and reset it and all was good. Try a new needle, then look really closely at the timing settings.

@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
If you have a trusted sewing technician who charges reasonable rates then yes, have him/her do some cleaning and oiling. You can maintain the machine yourself if you like. My other videos for model 413 include cleaning and setting the tension, replacing worn belts if needed and how to oil the machine. kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8 Those are the basic areas that can need attention on a vintage machine. You can do that. If the needle bar is dirty, just clean it with some alcohol and a rag. Brush out the nose end and around the tension unit and the bobbin and feed dog area to get any old lint out. Use canned air to blow it out if needed. Follow my oiling video and wipe off any old oil you can and put new, fresh oil. If the motor belt is cracking you can replace it just follow the video. If you have tension issues it may just be a dirty unit so clean it by brushing/ blowing out lint and clean with alcohol if needed. Timing belts last a long, long time so it is usually serviceable and OK to use. You can download a FREE copy of the Instruction Manual from SInger at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 It will show how to remove the bobbin case for cleaning. Keeping the machine clean and oiled it the most important for good sewing and long life. Happy sewing, Tali. I'm glad you found my channel.

Andy, at 15:00, when you attempt to move the thread from left to right, to get into that "eye", have you tried holding the thread top & bottom, and guiding it from right to left...it seems like I remember threading it like that on the 457 that I learned how to sew on...rather than manually "poking the thread" through that eye... try it, and see if it works ...thanks, Shari
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
I wonder where you did read that. It's a good tip 👍. I'll try it next time I have a machine with that wire thread guide on the front of the nose cover. It is odd that the 413 manual does not show the nose cover having that wire guide. The thread guide is around on the side and down low, haha. The 457 manual does show the wire thread guide on the front of the nose cover, but the instructions do not mention the threading method you describe. Holding the thread above and below for tension and moving it into the guide from the left would work great. I can almost hear the little "ping" as the thread snaps in. Thanks for commenting and sharing on my channel, Shari, take care.

@andytubesewing19535 жыл бұрын
Hi, S. Sounds like a few things going on with your machine. So I think you mean the hook does not turn and won't snag the needle thread, among other problems. Since a non-moving hook is a critical problem, let's work on that first. The hook is turned by a timing belt on the bottom of the machine. The belt is turned by pulleys, and the pulley on the right is the "power" pulley that is on the end of a shaft that goes up to the top of the machine. Up on the top that shaft has a plastic gear that is known to break and even crumble to pieces. If that is the case you have to replace that gear. Here is a video about how to do that. It is a different model, and the machine is slightly different, but even the gear part number is the same. By watching the video, or some of it, you can see where the gear is and take a look at it and determine if it is broken. Of course, a big clue is the pulley and belt is not turning on the bottom. You can then decide if you want to replace the gear. Here is the link to the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU Good Luck, S.

I think mine is a light turquoise color.I bought it because I thought I could cannibalize the parts for my 401A and my Touch And sew, but you said the machines were totally different. .Summer is not a good time to work on machines, much too busy. Looking forward to tackling the 401 again in the Fall. I’ve gathered all the things I need to finish the machine. Andy , You made a video that showed how to restore the machine but not take all the parts out of the bottom and top section of the machine. Could you please tell me which video that was? When I Removed all the parts from the nose section of the 401A It destabilized the whole section with the cams when I remove that long wire. I’ve decided to clean the top section without removing all the parts, which you advise would be the best thing to do.

Hi Dorothy. I have three playlists that may help you with the 401A. They cover work I did on the 403A, 404 and 503A. I'll list them here and you can look at the playlists and pick different videos to watch. kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKIB4kvIHCfHYuyLMUp5A4UI kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKInZUROdMNIGGO_nfhM2u6D kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJZaZn2zl3LsnV2d7UhrqvX Anyone can download a FREE copy of Singer's Service Manual for the Model 401A here: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf It has 45 pages of adjustment, remove and replace instructions. If you removed something from the nose end and it destabilized the whole cam section I'm thinking you removed the needle bar driving arm. The Service Manual will explain that, and I made videos in the playlists of the model 503A. Here is the main page listing all my playlists by model number: kzbin.info/door/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4wplaylists?view_as=subscriber

Hi Andy, my new belt came in today, and I was able to install and get machine to run. I think it still needs to get some old lube out though, the motor spins nice and fast for bobbin winding, but slows down and needs help starting. Question I have is for the bobbin winder selector knob, ours was missing, we can manage without, but would prefer finding one. Do you have an idea for a source? Threading machine, what surprised me was the little horizontal slice in the needle clamp., I don't have a lot of experience, but that was a first for me.
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
That selector knob is not even shown in the parts diagram so I can't give you a part number. It is a part of the arm cover. No one will be making new ones any longer so you need to find an online seller who is parting out a machine. Connie has the complete arm cover for $20 if it is worth that to you www.thriftyfarmgirl.com/shop/singer-413-stylist-parts That's not something a seller would usually sell by itself; no market for it and not enough profit, ao it would be included with the arm cover when sold. As to the binding of the motor running, there are a lot of causes for that. If the timing belt is too tight, if the worm gear on the vertical shaft is too tight against the gear on the bottom of the cam stack, If the takeup lever is bent a little, etc. Oiling as per the instruction manual is always required.
@BillWhetstone Жыл бұрын
@@andytubesewing1953 Thanks for Connies link, I ordered the top cover, needed the spool pin as well. Trying to make the machine as complete as I can. I followed one of your tips on letting machine run in for 5 minutes to work in the lubrication, that helped a lot. I'll check that the top gear is not too tight against the other one. The pulley I had ordered recently split. Not sure why, but popped apart. However, it had arrived with no through hole, it was solid on one end so it only went partway onto shaft, the old pulley had a thru hole. I use a drill bit to create the hole. Maybe that stresses it? Have new pulley on order now.

It totals 64 pages and has tons of information about the machine.

@andytubesewing19533 жыл бұрын
So the machine is new to you? Please be sure the machine is in sewing mode, and not bobbin winding mode. Next, be sure the hook is rotating when you turn the handwheel. The hook is the part that holds the bobbin case in place and turns counterclockwise when you turn the handwheel. If the hook DOES turn but won't pull up the bobbin thread then the hook may be out of time. Here is a video for your model that shows how to check and set the timing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnKxqpZ6bpWqh8k Going back to the hook rotating thing... if the hook DOES NOT turn then you probably have a broken plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft. This is a very common problem due to the age of the machine. A new gear costs about $10 and you can do the work yourself if you are willing. I have a detailed video about replacing it. The video is for model 457, but the principles and most of the parts are the same or similar to your 413. You can see the video here if needed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU (watch at 1.5 speed and see the timeline below video for the start times of the different steps.) There could be a couple other reasons for your bobbin thread not coming up like you put the bobbin in backward, the needle in backward, threaded the needle backward or the needle is not completely inserted up into the needle clamp. Since your name is "Creative" I'm assuming you did all that properly so the timing and the gear are the most common physical problems that cause the bobbin thread situation. You can fix this, and change your name to Creative 1 2 3 ✨ Good Luck.

I just got a 413 in cabinet, and it looks like the little black gear on top of the vertical shaft is stripped, so no movement of the hook. Any idea where to get a service manunal? I see the gear is being sold at numerous places.
@andytubesewing19538 ай бұрын
As far as I know, there is no separate Service Manual for model 413. I believe the SInger Techs used the 416-418 manual. The 413 was the lower-end version. You can buy the 416-418 manual here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-416-418-sewing-machine-service-manual/ but it does not show how to replace the gear. I have a few videos for model 413 for other maintenance: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8 Also, I have a video about gear replacement on a 457K: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU and for the 466: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJTjJ3dRTrDPtIqR6DMoaex Those videos may give you some ideas about how to go about it and how to get access, etc. The Gear is SInger Part #155819 a very common part across several models. The original factory gear was white, so if you have a broken black gear it is an after-market replacement gear that has also failed. I found most black gears to be of lesser quality than new white gears, but maybe they are better now. I'd still prefer a white one though.

@@andytubesewing1953 Wow, thank you! It looks like the 413 is from the same series as the 457 and uses the same vertical gear. Will watch that video now! 👍👍 Would you still recommend getting a white gear? Any preferred source for it?

My needle won’t pull up my bobbin thread, what am I doing wrong ?😩
@andytubesewing195310 ай бұрын
If you threaded the needle and bobbin case properly and can't pull it up then the machine may be out of timing. That is how the needlepoint and hook point line up when the needle is starting upwards. Here is a playlist of my videos for this model: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8 One of the videos is about the timing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnKxqpZ6bpWqh8k You can check the timing without making adjustments just to see if it is set OK. The other possibility is the plastic gear on the top of the verticle shaft is breaking apart and not turning the timing belt properly or at all. The gear can be replaced if needed.

@@simonfraser3332 It turns out that MY 413 is the weird one 😲I've verified that your 413 has the correct setup. The sister machines, 416 & 418 have the wire guide on the faceplate. I guess someone put a 416/418 faceplate onto my 413 model. The actual faceplate (which can be called a nose cover also) is the same type and size on all three models, but only the 413 has the thread guide on the bottom of the nose. I also looked up documents for the next generation, models 513, 514, 518, 533, & 538 and they all have that style you have. No idea why the 416 & 418 have the wire guide, although a few earlier Singer models use that setup also. I sure wish the machine could talk. A coincidence? Maybe it's a good sign. The correct bobbin is a SInger Class 66, plastic or metal if you prefer. If you use a Class 15 bobbin with the flat sides it will catch the thread and tangle into a nest very quickly. If that is not the cause, let me know a little more info and I'll try to help.
