I flew on on a rescue on Buffalo. Dependable, versatile but that high rear wing makes for a roller coaster ride 😮

I've seen the Buffalo fly around all my life since the early 1970's with its distinctive low pitch hum. My most notable moment involving the Buffalo was in the 2000's when a small plane experienced an engine failure in flight and crashed near Port Alberni BC killing the pilot and one passenger there were 3 or 4 survivors I believe. I was tuned in on my VHF radio scanner listening to the radio communication chatter of the Buffalo plane circling around my area many time for about 15 minutes when they announced a plane crash occurred. Me and other scanner buffs were likely the first locals to hear about it. This crash made national headline news. I will miss the familiar old Buffalo but, at the same time, I cant wait to see the all new Airbus C-295 replacement in action.

Having been on a training flight with the sar techs on one of these planes. They are an amazing aircraft with a top notch crew.

i remember seeing one back as a kid in 2001 at YPO airport here in ontario a very rare sight! i dont know exactly why they were there for but they were there for a short time they packed up and left and moments later a voyageur airways Dash 7 showed up they were doing passenger flights at that time it was great to see two DHC birds!

geezus this plane is over 50 years old. I know these things were built to last in the olden days but 50 years due to not acquiring new planes and equipment. I will not be surprised that the arm/air/navy forces are still using stuff from ww2

You’ve made an error in naming the flight engineer. The first female flight engineer in the CAF was my Stepmother, Cheryl Tardif, as shown in the photos.

They said that was the first all female flight crew not the first females to have each of those roles. The video is correct.

Our SAR crew (Aux 7) worked under a Buff with other resources flying overhead dropping flares for illumination of a man overboard at SandHeads one night. Impressive aircraft and great crew with warnings of flares being dropped and not to be under the hot illumination flares as they would burn our rubber boats (RHIB's) ;)

Growing up it was common to see the Buffalo flying around the air space around where I lived, always want to take a ride in one. Always been drawn to prop planes vs jet engines or turbines.

What a great aircraft. It's a shame that the government didn't see fit to replace these iconic planes with new build Buffalos from Viking Air. But no, the people in Ottawa just couldn't bring themselves to shop at home.
@davepaul3601
@davepaul3601 Жыл бұрын
I agree. It would be nice if the military tax dollars could support industry at home but I think the C295s are considerably more capable. Larger, increased range, speed, payload, more fuel efficient.

It's not that simple. The Buffalo didn't meet the new requirements, and there was substantial risk in getting Viking to do the required development... although the replacement (CC-295 Kingfisher) has had lots of issues, too.

Current aircraft of this type are not very different, although I assume they don't have a table with a paper map any more. De Havilland Canada would still build some Buffalo for you if you committed to buying enough of them.

@@brianb-p6586 Really? I thought Mulroney sold deHavilland to Embraer.
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 Жыл бұрын
de Havilland never belonged to any government,@@dotter8 . Bombardier had all of the de Havilland Canada (DHC) designs. Viking bought all of the older designs from Bombardier long ago, and more recently Longview bought the Dash 8 program; that brought all of the old DHC designs back under one (private) owner - along with the Canadair water bomber - which has revived the De Havilland Canada name. It was Viking (prior to the revival of the De Havilland name) which proposed building new DHC-5 Buffalo to replace the old Buffalo, but that company still owns the type and now operates as De Havilland Canada. The only types either in production or planned for production by De Havilland Canada are the DHC-6 Twin Otter DHC-8 Dash 8 (Q400) DHC-515 (previously CL-415) I am not aware of any part of De Havilland, Canadair, or Bombardier ever being sold to Embraer.
