Here in the south of the United States where football is king I have believed if my sons wanted to be a ballet dancer instead of football I would be supportive 100%. Good to see this interview and a personal story of a male dancer. Kudos to you. Do what you love from dance to gardening.

This is beautiful and inspiring on so many levels. I especially appreciated Bracewell's acceptance of the reality that dancing at his top level will not be sustainable in the same way gardening will be - but both are true forms of natural beauty and of art, as is the arranging of flowers.

I came into gardening through my parents own love of it. I have just recently moved from the city, to a house with a yard, and able to do my own gardening. It really is therapeutic. It can be so many things to its caretaker. Sometimes exhausting, sometimes inspiring, sometimes frustrating, sometimes restorative. It teaches you a lot about yourself. Things like patience, which I have little of, or creativity that I didn’t know I have, come through in the results of the garden. You also learn that a garden is never truly “done” and will always require your attention, which is both exciting and stressful. I can’t imagine being a dancer and knowing how finite, the ability to physically do something you love and have spent your whole life working towards. Best wishes to both of you.

@@gardensenglishanddance My apologies. That was my failed attempt at humor. I was making fun of the way an American like myself would react to the very kind correction you gave, “principle versus principal”. We typically hate to be corrected because we think we’re always right, and are at the best at everything. Instead of thanking you, we’ll instead accuse you of “grammar-shaming”, and retort with something like “well, you know what I mean!”.

I know nothing about dance but William Bracewell could make ballet his lifelong profession long after his dancing career ends. It seems to me, however, that Baryshnikov never stopped dancing but I could be wrong. For instance, William could become a choreographer or have his own dance company. Good luck to him and his partner. I've never seen a ballet in real life but I've always wanted to. But at this point, the world is William's oyster. So young and talented and full of life. There's no need to get into details about life after ballet now. Enjoy dancing and your beautiful garden.
