Part 1 - Take the FEVE meter gauge train between Santander to Casar de Periedo. Enjoy uninterrupted views of the line ahead as we leave the suburbs and industry of Santander behind and head into the attractive countryside of Northern Spain, first through rolling hills then along dramatic river gorges with overhanging cliffs.

Hi Michelle, I was going to fly into Oviedo until I discovered the flight was from Stansted airport which was inconvenient as live much nearer Portsmouth from where I could catch a Ferry to Santander. I phoned the ferry company and the price for the crossing was really expensive considering it didn't include a cabin. The lady on the phone sensed I was unimpressed with the price and said "why don't you make a holiday of your trip", she came back with a really good deal that included a cabin on the ferry and hotel accommodation at Santander and Llanes for two people. Llanes was really beautiful and my short break turned out to be an excellent experience including this wonderful train ride. Northern Spain is nothing like the holiday costas of Southern Spain, it's green and scenic with very few British holiday makers. Your family come from a beautiful part of the world.

Google Translate - Hi, I am pleased you enjoyed this trip through beautiful Northern Spain. Many English holiday makers visit the Southern Spanish resorts and never get to see this part of Spain. Thank you very much. No I don't work for the tourist board, but I do enjoy editing the videos as it allows me to re-live the trips I have been lucky enough to make. A number of people have contacted me wanting know more about the trips, such as; did I travel with a tour company or was it an itinerary I worked out? The second part of my trip from Santander to Ribadesela should be posted in the next day or two. I do appreciate you taking time to comment. Tim.

+Deckie Deckie Hi, your comments make interesting reading, I found this railway almost by accident when I went to visit friends in Oviedo. I was going to catch a plane, but when Raynair added all the extra costs, coupled with having to get to Luton, I looked for alternatives, after all Portsmouth is not far from my home and Brittany Ferries sail to Santander, now I just needed to get to Oviedo, so I used Google Earth and found FEVE railway. The foot passenger fare to Santander was far more expensive than I had bargained for especially with a cabin. The Brittany Ferries lady I was booking the trip with said "wait, I've got an idea ... how about taking a proper holiday and I'll book the hotels and sort a cabin out". She put together a cracking deal and advised us to enjoy a first class meal on the way ..... we stayed in Llanes then continued to Oviedo ..... Northern Spain is stunningly beautiful and Llanes is a real gem. On my return I purchased a couple of books about the metre gauge railways of Northern Spain. Your Grandparents must have seen many changes with the demise of steam and the coming of both diesel and electric trains on this wonderful network of railway lines. We passed the Transcantábrico train on our travels and I thought that has to be the best way enjoy this outstanding scenery. I look forward to returning and exploring more of Northern Spain by Rail.

That has to be the best way to use this gem of a railway as it passes through pretty villages, historic towns and awesome scenery. I would love to return to explore more of the wonderful countryside, it is so different to the stereotypical image most of us in the UK have of the Spain.

I hope you enjoyed your journey as much as I did. I was travelling with my wife and we stopped off for 4 days at Llanes using the train to visit other towns along the coast before continuing on to Oviedo to visit friends. I didn't go to Ferrol, but I have every intention of returning to travel more of the FEVE metre gauge system.

+Timsvideochannel1 Yes, I liked it. I am a railfan and for me it is the same to go back but now a langer period. This year I went with my wife by car from Holland to this area and made a returntrip by FEVE from Oviedo to San Esteban. The journey to Ferrol is splendid, you need sunny weather that is for sure. Oviedo-Ferrol is more than 7 Hours. My trip last year went after Ferrol to A Coruna-Santiago de Compostela-Leon by RENFE and from Leon to Bilbao by the daily service of FEVE again. Almost 8 Hours. Originaliteiten my trip starten in Bilbao and by FEVE via Lierganes to Santander.

I travel to Northern Spain by ferry from Portsmouth, it's a really relaxing way to start a holiday. The first time I went, I was surprised by how beautiful Northern Spain was, nothing like the holiday resorts of Southern Spain. Having read your reply and several books about the FEVE railway I know I must return to see more of both the railway and the wonderful scenery.

Timsvideochannel1 Seven years ago, I stayed at an Oviedo's hotel just above the railways station (FEVE&RENFE). I've been suprised by the constant activity of these blue trains towards the suburb towns, But I noticed that twice a day, FEVE triped to Santander, as well to Ferrol (near A Coruña,Galícia). This last one, I thought, will be worthy to enjoy the landscape along the Cantabric See in the Western Asturias and North Galicia, But the FEVE little trains were itselves quite fascinating...

Hi Bob, these trains didn't hang about. I didn't get to ride the Airtrain to Brisbane airport, because the friends I visited picked me up and returned me to the airport by car. The train I travelled on to Longreach was the "Spirit of the Outback", I've posted some photos on my recently created Facebook Group page - facebook.com/groups/2505405939486692/ I will start uploading videos from that trip over the coming months. can someone please tell me, why does the train slow right down at stations, but never stop?
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, some of the stations are request stops, the conductor tells the driver if there is anyone on the train who wants to get off and the train slows ready to stop in case there is anyone on the station wanting to catch the train.

Los trenes viajaban a una velocidad razonable para estrecho calibre y había un par de ocasiones cuando el conductor tuvo que frenar duro para evitar golpear coches cruzando el ferrocarril en frente del tren.

Northern Spain is very different to the South, it is green and very scenic with quaint villages. The early morning sea mist rolled in as a result of the warm weather, it was not until the line left the coast that it cleared revealing the lush greenery and higher than expected mountains. The noise in the cab was exaggerated by the GoPro camera, they are not noted for great sound recording, it was relatively quiet in the passenger accommodation.

Un excelente video; pero con todos mis respetos y a mí entender, sobra la música, está fuera de lugar, carece de sentido y le hace perder todo su encanto. El aficionado no quiere música en este tipo de videos; si no el sonido original de cabina.
