Great stuff. I watched a lot of this game transpire live and it seemed really tempestuous. I'd love to see a full analysis some time, especially the reasoning behind the decision to capture with the rook in the center to go down the exchange.

2 rounds a day, that's normal but tough. remember to eat, sleep, and at least take a walk at some moment. hanging out with chess friends and having a bit of fun is good too at some pt. and preparing a bit, if only to ascertain what direction to take the game. :-)

i have seen that type of chess pieces before; that's a very nice chess set! enjoying your games review. very easy for me to follow and I am learning a lot as your thought process or at least your presentation is very well-organized. It seems to me that you get positions where both sides have several viable options on each move. It is good to see that the opening theory, although immensely helpful (e.g. if you knew that Nh6-g4 idea from the Hebden-Hambleton game, you probably would have won), is not deciding your games and you are getting good positions with both colors. Kind of curious what you used to play when you were a 1.e4 player with the White pieces, if you played the sharp forcing theoretical lines, I will check out a few of your earlier games in the database there sometime.
@JohnBartholomewChess
@JohnBartholomewChess 8 жыл бұрын
+elvenbread191 Thanks, HematiteBrown. I also thought I achieved pretty good positions out of the opening in this tourney. I used to play some fairly sharp lines as a 1.e4 player (e.g. the Bg5 Najdorf).

John Bartholomew That's cool. will check your last games later, likely first round pairing tomorrow at NCC is Gata Kamsky (seeded 6/10 players in 2 day) :D. if not Gata, maybe Magesh or Paragua if he joins. so I will prepare for the former for a few hours. the former two tend to keep things simple so i hope to prepare well, play solid and gradually put some pressure on them and not go time trouble crazy. yeah, they're strong and many times more experienced but the latter two have given me great chances to say the least. been discussing and playing the Scandi quite a bit lately, worked my way through the Smerdon book; it's thorough. prefer your approaches however in general tho he has some nice ideas against Nf3 and white's 'safe' and solid sidelines (esp. Bb5+ ideas). don't recall if plans with Ne2 and g3 were discussed but everything else was.

Great extract. It's true black's play was very impressive, pushing to the edge. In the initial position (puzzle), was Qe4 a valid alternative to Qe7 (with the same Bd3 idea) ? On 1.Qe4, if 1...Rd4?, then white has 2.Qe8+ Kh7 3.Bg8+ leading to mate.
@JohnBartholomewChess
@JohnBartholomewChess 8 жыл бұрын
+Laurent SaltofLife I believe 1.Qe4 is met by 1...Qb4, pinning White along the 4th rank.

I like that little detail of using the word "GM" and not "WGM" in the title. I think it speaks very well of you. I admire this woman. She was under time pressure but decided to risk everything for the win, and with such confidence. No wonder how she got to be a GM. As always, I have some silly questions: Did she said anything about the game after it finished? What was her reaction after you played Bd3? Thanks for the video!
@JohnBartholomewChess
@JohnBartholomewChess 8 жыл бұрын
+martín No, she didn't say anything after the game. I could tell she was disappointed in the final stages of the game (I would be too). She didn't outwardly react to Bd3.

Just a little note, WGM and GM are two separate titles. I don't like the system, but there are actually several female titles where they can basically get a "women" version of a FIDE title where they only have to get a rating that's 200 points below the conventional title. So WGMs are about 2300 and GMs are the usual 2500+.

At 2:15 in the video, what about b4 instead of Bd3?
@silas99991

what about at minute 22:00 instead of qe7 qe4? with the idea of bd3 threatening mate. if qe4 qc1 bd3 qg5 kf1 maybe rxd3? and roughly equal queens endgame? just something to think about
@JohnBartholomewChess
@JohnBartholomewChess 8 жыл бұрын
+silas maclachlan Is your timestamp wrong? At 22:00 there are no queens on board. I think you're referring to 2:20; I believe the problem with Qe4 (instead of Bd3) is that Black has the pinning reply ...Qb4

I was worried John's tournament schedule would mean I had less daily content. Sometimes it is great to be wrong.Anyone know what he has to do to get a GM norm? At the time of writing this he's on 3/5, which is pretty good, given the field.
@JohnBartholomewChess
@JohnBartholomewChess 8 жыл бұрын
+kellmano1 It's all about performance rating: you need a perf of 2600+ after 9 rounds. Unfortunately I didn't get close to that number this tournament :/

I watched this game and I think you were pretty low on time at this point, so great job defending a tough position here. Its funny because the whole time I was picturing you playing this cold, stone faced russian guy when in actuality you were playing a cute blond(ish) haired blue eyed girl.

+John Bartholomew yea at 7:24 with queen f4 i seen a perpetual check for white. then i noticed black king is still escaping to the queen side via queen f4+ king d7 queen f7 king c8. if there was a way white could play bishop e6 i think black is in trouble. this endgame is very instructive. out of the all games you played i think im gonna give this the best game award. instructive endgame. thanks john. have a good evening.

She's cute John, plus she's Russian, marry her and you two will bring centuries of long awaited political and chess-rivalry peace between Russia and the U.S. She seems a bit grumpy in her photos, I'm sure your Scandinavian openings will cheer her up, see, you two are a couple made from heaven, so what the heck are you waiting for, read your vows to her already!

You praised her for fighting for the win. I see it differently. Either she thought less of your ability and expected you to make a mistake or she failed to properly assess the intuitive nature of the position.....something computers can't do, as evidenced by the engine validating her effort but not changing the result. Computers will often fight on in hopelessly drawn positions. Lastly it could be she knew it was a draw but she was OCD or had some such malady that controlled her beyond good sense. Or forget all that and it could be just because she's a woman...nobody understands them. :)
