Was a wrecker operator in the west San Fernando Valley from 1975 to 1996. Among other companies worked law enforcement at Calabasas Tow (now Sierra Towing), drove HD for Howard Sommers OPG West Valley and Tom John's Towing in Sun Valley, federal and state law enforcement, OPG for Beverly Hills PD. Cannot imagine an electric tow truck trying to recover a semi rollover. Not only the power needed to move/lift 50,000lbs+ of dead weight, but the stand-bye time that often occurs depending on the circumstances. Telling CHP because of stand-bye time your battery is too low to recover or tow... is not an option. What a joke. Back in the day we used to put business cards in the callboxes on the 101 fwy, not legal, but it got us business.
@eric_wtm24942 күн бұрын
As a tow truck driver in California, that works 12hr shifts. I don't even see how it's even possible to effectively use an EV tow truck. Charging them would take ages because the technology isn't there and lack of infrastructure. People and tow companies don't have the time to wait for an essential truck to charge and it certainly won't be capable of running 24hrs between drivers for a 24hr emergency service.

Think they would have to stay at a central location charging and only got out for one job at a time when needed. So no more freeway service paroling the freeway, they would just have to wait to be called. I often thought it would be better to have a a prius doing the freeway service patrolling and call in a tow when needed. But yea for 24 hour operations they need to perfect fast battery swaping and you might be coming back to the yard 3 times in a shift to swap a fully charged battery. And of course it would not cost $2,000 to get a tow truck to show up in CA!! LOL

CARB is responsible for cleaning up the air in California. If you can see from Huntington Beach to Big Bear, that is because of the cleaner air in California, due in part to the CARB regulations. By the way over 75% of the electricity generated in California in the daytime is from renewable power! It is at night that the natural gas power plants are running. Back in 1975, it was the CARB that told the power company they can no longer use the thick oil to generate power and this reduced the smog a lot. Now they can only use natural gas to produce electricity in California. A lot of power in California is from hydroelectric power. Even if the natural gas is used to charge a car, the overall smog is less because of the smog controls on the power plant.

This ISN'T an "effort to cleanup the air". This is a TOTAL CONTROL effort. If they had worked on better fuel cell systems, that ran on LPG, LNG, Hydrogen, or even something new, they could have gradually adapted the current fuel stations. Just like they did to change from leaded to unleaded gas. That would've produced nothing but water vapor, and run more traditional and powerful vehicles. But this would've allowed freedom of the users, both commercial and regular civilian users. Which they can't have. Yes, it's a movie and book, but in the story of I, Robot, it's the EV's that get shut down. ALL your EV's can be controlled by the maker/government. If not directly, then by what they allow to be charged. But the people VOTED for this! You voted to give Newsom this power, to have the legislature be a super majority, and ALL statewide offices to all be leftist democrats. So you can blame CARB all you want, it's the VOTERS of CA that have done this to themselves! The state government appoints CARB, the people that the voters put in office, made this happen.

@stevew95632 күн бұрын
Well you have to remember freeway service patrol requires the trucks to be always patrolling the freeway during thier assigned times. In an 8 hour shift that can mean upwards of 400 miles a day. Some are 7 days a week. At the end of 4 years that close to 600,000 miles. While they are heavy duty trucks they can start to show wear and tear. And of course CHP wants only the best most reliable vehicles out there if they are paying $80 an hour for them to be out there. So those trucks get sold to smaller operators that use them in non government roadside service business. And of course it used to be the Government contracts got the new trucks but by the sound of this video there might not be any new ones in the pipeline. I am sure the CHP will adapt and allow the older ones to stay on the contracts. They regularly inspect them and dont allow anything unsafe to exist so they are still usable trucks, just not as shiny.

umm. Ford is still able to sell gas and diesel truck chassis in California, because they are also selling electric vans, cars and pickup trucks. This company can switch to the F-600 and F-650 chassis and use CARB compliant gas and diesel engines. This problem is also effecting the RV industry too. They just need to sell one Rivian Amazon vans per 9 other RV's they sell in California. So they buy a Amazon van from Rivian, sell it to Amazon, then can sell 9 RV's. Easy.

There has to be exemption to emergency vehicles. Emergency vehicles are a very small number of vehicles on the road and contribute a small amount to the pollution problem I believe. Another problem is that it would take longer to charge a tow truck vs a car or pickup truck due to the increased battery capacity needed and this would greatly impair the ability to rescue vehicles. Can you imagine a rolled over simi truck blocking the LA freeway at rush hour and there is no tow trucks available because they are charging.
@Kangenpower72 күн бұрын
This whole thing is silly. Ford can supply CARB compliant gas and diesel trucks because they are also selling more than enough of the electric vans, cars and trucks. If Rivian sells some of their Amazon vans to International, they can then sell that van as a electric vehicle, and then produce 9 diesel trucks for California.

@terrellstewart40712 күн бұрын
I say let the chips fall when cars are broke down everywhere and no one to move them legally and traffic is a fiasco the politicians will have to deal with the kaos they created and fix it.

There really needs to be a oversight committee for CARB. To many rules and regulation have impacted CA in a negative way. The air quality has made massive improvements in the last few years.

time to de-fund carb. and shut it down.

So you are happy with the clean air? But not happy that in 1975 CARB required catalytic converters on cars and improved smog emissions over the past 45 years? The reason the air is cleaner is all steel manufacturing moved out of California, and they also prevented the electric generators from using thick oil to generate electricity, so there is less smog in the air now. Also you can see from Huntington Beach to Big Bear now because of the lower smog levels. If you watch old shows like Dragnet, they open the show with a aerial picture of LA. Look at the smog in 1971! Remember how bad it was? The air is much cleaner now because of the CARB regulations and the SCAQMD. And this towing company needs to know that they can keep buying gas and diesel F-600 and F-650 truck chassis. They can build that 25 ton capacity rotator on a F-750 chassis with a CARB compliant diesel engine. In 2027, they can build a 50 ton rotator on a Tesla electric class 8 truck. 500 mile range and the ability to recharge in 30 minutes from 20% to 70% full. Also consider your car picks in 1978. A underpowered car that got 18 MPG? Now you can pick a fuel injected car with lots of power, and many are over 30 MPG! That is in part due to the CARB restrictions of smog, so they have less unburned hydrocarbons, and they must use every fraction of a gram of fuel that is burned in the engine, so you get better MPG!
@davidpiech890347 минут бұрын
Other states adopted these CARB laws, like Massachusetts. Because of the restrictive regulations, truck sales in Massachussets will be ended or restricted January 1, 2025.

California is not only targeting tow trucks. I bought an F550 flatbed and only when I went to get it put in my name did I find out I could no longer register it in California. I lost $3,000 having to sell it in Georgia for less, of course California screwed me out of $1,000 sales tax. This state sucks.
@bones38262 күн бұрын
But you left these in California voted for this. You get what you get when these electric cars and trucks catch fire and you can't put them out. You're gonna have more problems. You can shake a stick at this is stupid.

Now I know why it took 6 hours to be a to get tow earlier this month. CARB, seem to want to air so clean that the roads will be almost empty like North Korea.

Notice hiw the government doesn't have to fallow their own rules? Time for we tge people to have our say in thus! That mean, GET INVOLVED PEOPLE! Make YOUR voice heard. Also, STOP being ignorant and STUPID on issues if the dat! But for most, i guess that's asking to much these days! Hiw unfortunate.

I think that it is well past the time that the Calififornia air resources board (CARB) be elected by the people of California as well as all other boards that cause significant impact on the economy. This will take a ballot measure to be passed.

I thought we were in a FREE COUNTRY? Did Californians vote for this? What happened to FREEDOM OF CHOICE? We don't have charging stations to travel in long distances! California has mass power outages in Summer! If there's high winds they turn the power off! They need to get rid of CARB!!! These big companies using gas and diesel vehicles need to join up and hire high profile lawyers and sue Commiefornia!!

The CARB can't pass law, but they can pass regulations . If they don't have a workable anser to a problem they are part of the problem and need to be held accountable by being an elected body of goverment.

I like clean air but CARB makes decisions without using common sense. CARB should be an elected board that his held accountable by the people.

California is an absolute joke. Diesel trucks have already been mandated to become much cleaner, bannning them altogether is idiotic as it is unsafe.
@jaykroeker961Күн бұрын
I’m hoping that these two people that were interviewed, know in their hearts that the unelected top leadership of CARB is not interested in a family, or small business’s success or sustainability. Hopefully, their kindness toward the regulators and local representatives is just them trying to appease the powerful, to let their businesses survive a little longer until something “sensible” comes along. Government can’t have sensible solutions because environmental activist groups keep suing the EPA to comply with constantly changing demands.

I'm going to run for governor based on this I will abolish the diamond lanes 2 all auto registrations New or Old will cost $10 a year. 3 I will abolish smog checks I will promote Diesel and gasoline trucks and cars no matter how old they are buy incentives as if they will install propane injection which contributes to clean air on older vehicles. 4 I will abolish carb but offer them jobs on drilling platforms off of Long Beach

You mentioned hybrids, ones that use a generator powered by alcohol. So why is that not an option? Hybrids have far more range than any other type. Since corn syrup will be phased out there will be more than enough fuel.

It’s not like you guys out there don’t know but a wheel lift a small wheel lift weighs about 13,000 pounds so how in the hell are they gonna produce electric tow trucks? What are they gonna do eliminate the dollies the floor jack and another equipment that these trucks have to carry where is the boom gonna go? I’m sure there’s ways to make it work, but it’s just ridiculous.
