Lashed together this is a displacement of 900,000 tons. This is nearly 3 times the largest ocean freighter ever. People don't realize the size of Mississippi River traffic. It is simply amazing.

In my younger years in an act (one of many) of stupidity I attempted to "surf" my runabout in the wake of a barge. I thought I could get on top of the wave and just keep surfing. Unfortunately, I came down the frontside and water came crashing over the bow. It had so much force that it broke the windshield off my boat. The boat almost sank but pulling the drain plug at speed quickly drained the water out. Understand that I was about 500 feet back and the boat still produced this much turbulance. I have since seen people attempt the same thing with a jetski with not much better results. This is your brain on drugs! Seriously, I did this stone cold sober. Just a heads up. Respect these huge and powerful boats and don't be stupid like I was. Great video; it just brought back memories of my nightmare.

5:08 and later- I'm always amazed at the wakes those towboats leave. With all that tonnage, whoever that skipper is would have to get all the way into those diesels and stand on them in order to get anything done.

Those are mostly empty and not against stream. I hated working on rigs like this. To go through a lock you run the barges to shore, disconnected them and bring two or three through. Push them up to shore. and go back through to get the next batch. Every time you had this pita it rained. Oil barges were worst because they are slippery and .. the oil floats on top of the water on the wet deck and the beck is really hard. I've run all the way around the Gulf of Mexico and the East Coast. Then started moving rigs from place to place around and other barges a lot nicer than the oil barges. Coolest thing is being out and it is like a door as you cross the gulf. It is freezing and in a minute it is summer. Another thing is that the ocean behind you glows for miles where you have harassed the little creatures chilling in the water.

Looked like alot were empty, am i right? I dont think people understand how much material and weight those barges can hold. That's a huge tow boat and the first one with 49 I've ever seen. Most I've ever seen on the river i live on is like 12. Big warrior river in Alabama

Thank you for sharing this gorgeous tugboat and the giant load that it is very capable of maneuvering through the river. I think you did a fantastic job, I loved seeing in the end how the tugboat was secured to the many barges. You also appear to be a very talented drone driver! Keep up the great videos!

Hey it was great to see it! love the fast speed at the end and the editing! it was kind of cool to have no music and no V/O or intro. just an opportnity to see through your eyes a glimpse of summer river... and a LOT of barges.

Awesome shot of the sun. Looks like Spring came quick up there. lol! I have had the same problem with one of my videos. My camera had picked up the music playing from my headphones. A copyright holder made a legitimate claim. So I muted the video. And that didn't remedy the situation at all. Hmmmmm. I don't understand why it failed to work. The entire video is silent. I'm thinking about doing the same thing... delete the video and re-upload an edited version. Thanks Bowzer. Another fantastic video. Great stuff!

@wms16505 жыл бұрын
@Gdog Keep'em Rolling I agree with you. I worked for Brent Towing, 1973, 1976-1977, we pushed mostly fertilizer and chemicals for Union Carbide. The chemical barges usually had wenches on each corner. Some of the USL barges had notches that helped with tow make up. We always hated when the CORP. OFFICE would call for grain barge pick up. No wenches and my memory the grain barges had very little attachment points like those double buttons and I think "cavels"? Anyway a whole tow of grain barges would be a huge amount of work for sure.

8400 hp, built 1974, apparently 3 main engines, 3-screw. NOT a "towboat", but a "tugboat", specifically a "pusher tug"- std terminology.

Maybe ask freewayjim how he handles the music copyrights on his videos. Heck, 49 barges is good video with or without music.
