@@CaseyLaDelle Longer adjustable controlarms + Trackbar relocation bracket so it doesn't hit the tank, maybe? Since the tracks aren't round like a tire towards the back, they might clear despite being pushed back and no longer "centered" at full compression (I know this wouldn't help a tire clear because of how the axle swings up and "back", but since the back of the track isn't "round"?) Just thoughts. Jealous of the snow some, it's just rainy and dark where I'm at!

Ex-cellular tech, same same. The challenge of getting to the sites was half the fun, though I don't miss schlepping 40-pound radio modules through the snow in the event that I wasn't able to drive right up to it! A lot of mine were urban sites too, so I'd be atop some random building, perched on a rooftop pad overlooking the city, completely unknown to everyone below. Always at night, since network activity was always done during the maintenance window, 11pm-7am. It was a young person's work on a young person's schedule, but I still miss it.

I love Texas. I’ve been to many different places there. I drive down at least twice a year to visit. Flying down next month because I don’t like driving in the winter. So glad I have a reason to visit there often. I’m 75 BTW and travel by myself, my husband likes to sit at home. I enjoy stopping at National Parks and hiking. I worked in a plant where metal was often sliding over metal. They had some plastic strips that were mounted on the stationary plate that let the other plate slide over it without wearing the metal down. If your rubber track is pushed against a steel plate it would be like jamming on the brakes. Slippery plastic would save your tracks.

Casey, maybe look into Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW)/(UHMWPE). Sheet metal alone could act like a brake on contact but a UHMW plate or UHMW backed plate would provide a low friction, high abrasion resistant material. It is stable between 80 Celsius and -50 Celsius, is pretty easy to fab with, and is almost like working with wood or can be machined. It is used for boat docks, skis, guide rails, high speed conveyors, bed liners, and some body armor, etc. Adding a radius like a ski tip could prevent anything catching a leading edge and creating a sheering force.

In Jan.1980 I worked for a company that ran the radio repeaters for the logging companies around Mount Saint Helens. While transporting 2 100-pound propane cylinders to one of the towers the snow cat got stuck in a snow drift. We had to drag the cylinders by hand to the shelter. It was dark by then and we had to spend the night. The next morning, we drug the 2 empties to the cat and headed back down the mountain. The boss explained to me in 1978 he was stuck on top for 3 days. Thankfully the shelter is equipped with heat, food, cook stove, cots and sleeping bags.

About 15-16 years ago, a guy I knew ran a wireless internet company (before that was a big thing) and had a tower in town that was on top of a fairly tall peak. We had a big snow year that year and the tower went down. He didn't know anybody else so he asked me if I could shuttle his engineer up there on my snowmobile. So I did. All the guy had to do was "reset" it and it was fine. But I made $250 for the effort. For your track movement fix, I guess a 2-3" lift might be a good answer as long as it doesn't screw with your center of gravity too much.

9:28 In case no one has mentioned this, regarding the track clearance at that back door, you can put a "skid plate" in effect there but the force is still getting transmitted into the bodywork. It would only be a matter of time before that door either jams closed or open. Even the window may fail to roll down or maintain a seal when closed. Since you can't/won't lift it any higher I think you need to cut the bodywork/door even more.

I was a broadcast engineer in Bloomington IN. One cold night we had a microwave relay go down that was on a utility tower about a quarter mile up a steep hill (no road, just a wide path) with about 10 inches of snow. I originally took the Jeep (original style) thinking it would have the best chance. It wouldn't clear the bottom of the hill. I thought it was wasted time at first but I went back and got the Bronco II. It walked right up the hill. The jeep had the better tires for off road and snow.

Cost less than $400 if I remember right. Those mountain tower roads are usually pretty rough. I did some work on cell tower sites up here in Washington state, with a 110 gallon water tank in the back of a Dodge Cummins, and at the end of the day all that bouncing on those rough roads did me in. Felt like a freshman in high school getting pushed around all day by seniors...

My favorite memories were of driving over two mountain passes from Baker to John Day, with a four-foot bank on either side of the road, which was quite reminiscent of Olympic bobsled tracks. The area was so dazzling white that it almost gave me a headache even while under thick cloud cover. And when you did see the sun, sunglasses were absolutely essential. I LOVED this drive much more than going to Pendleton on I-84, because inevitably we would get caught with trucks who did not chain up, espcially on Meacham Pass.

Awesome video, and beautiful country you live and work in, Casey! As for your clearance problem, just for the heck of it, I searched 'Tracked Vehicles with retractable road wheels', not expecting any results, but something close did come up. A company named 'Darpa' came up in the results. The tracks can change shape, actually becoming round...like tires...while the rig's in motion. There was a video of it, mounted on a Hummer pick-up, in action. It's designed with the military in mind, and is in the prototype stage, therefore likely still a while away from actual production, but it was a truly cool set-up. Whether it'll ever be available to the civilian world, or be made small enough to fit an XJ or similar vehicle is anyone's guess, and if it ever does go into production, it would likely redefine the very concept of 'Expensive', but still an interesting concept. Anyway, thanks for all of the awesome content. Hope you and yours have an awesome Christmas!

What about a budget boost for the clearance/rubbing issues? With the spring spacers you would keep the same spring rate so full compression would be the lift height above where you are now as opposed to taller springs. Not saying you shouldn't smoothe out the edge too, but this might minimize how often you rub on the smoother surface. From what I've seen you don't seem to do a lot of off camber stuff with the snow recoveries. Just a thought. I'm sure you'll find something that works.

When I had tracks, I used a cutting board that I cut to fit, it was slick enough to allow the rubber to slide over it. It lasted me 5 years before I had to replace it with the other half of the cutting board that I cut to fit my application. I think I got it at the dollar store, so really cheap fix.

I have a friend who used to live in Tumalo that helped the radio engineers in the area, mostly at this site. I have seen pictures of the inside of the building, seems not much have changed 😁

Hi Casey. Any chance of a couple of dropped pins or the route you took? For us folks in the tiny cramped UK, i love how much outdoor space you have, and would like to follow your tracks (!) virtually on google earth. Cheers Dave

1/2" UHMW Plastic will be about as self lubricating for a wheel well shield at the front of your rear traacks as your gonna find VHMW Plastic may also serve you as well. A lot more work and i found rather difficult to get it to become uniform melting down cut up pieces of 5 gallon bucket is VHMW but once melted uniformally again becomes more of whats called PE or food grade plastic all of which would proba ly become your friend if you can fab up a way to hold it solidlyin place where you need it! Often small cutting boards from wally world can be a cheap solution and prevent the need of buying large sheets of material. Hope that helps if you go the bucket route i think shredding of it prior to trying to melt it would be best in your further efforts to get it all to melt to a uniform state at least that would be my route were i to need to attempt of it again. Hope its of some help to you. I wouldnt want to be needing to incure of the replacement rubber cost on those tracks very nice set up by the way looking good the trailer you got was a real nice pick for what your doing with it and nice to have around in general a buddy of mine went the same route w/ 22' deck over not powered like yours but still very functional to haul pretty much anything short of needing a roll back 👍

I would say for whatever reason the melting of the buckets in the final state of the different wearable plastics that I've played with it has the slickest or possibly best self-lubricating properties of any of the stock material sheet plastics your gonna find out there as 400degrees in the oven and then post-curing it shiny slick with an almost oiled feeling surface and is rather difficult to take a bite on with anything that's not sharp not to mention having it in a molten state you get the option to shape of it any way you want thick and rounded precicely where you may desire of it to be where you need it to be! That's not to say that getting it to the shape and form you may desire of it to be may not see to be a chalange all on its own but like anything if there is a will with a little of one's own ingenuity anything is possible!!!

Skid plates for the tracks are definitely the way to go to keep them from getting chewed up. You won't ever stop the impacts without even more lift and we both know that's dangerous with a unibody like a Cherokee. But weld on some stainless, coat it in Teflon and call it done.

Love those river crossings with snow everywhere. Didn't want to go through 315 comments to see if anyone else might ask this question: Is it possible to install a body lift so you get more clearance for your Tracks? Probably not cost effective.

For the track wear, use a replaceable piece of UHMW that you can swap out when it wears. You could weld up a plate and drill/tap holes for the UHMW to mount to it.

The opening in the part you cut off near your rear tracks looks big enough for a Harbor Freight dolly wheel. That would protect the track and keep it from rubbing.

I like going up to the com sites, but prefer summer. Redline Power Steering fluid will quiet down Jeep pumps. Suck out the pump, fill, drive for a day, repeat. Works well after a month it will be like new. Mesh hat in the snow? Doesn't work too well for the hair challenged. I'd love to buy a nice FlexFit hat in red with your logo.

Howdy Casey, I see from your post that you are not willing to go vertical with the Jeep, however, how about making the suspension a tad tighter by using air bags to stiffen the travel?
@CaseyLaDelle
@CaseyLaDelle Ай бұрын
It has nothing to do with the suspension. It’s the tracks rotating

@@CaseyLaDelle Casey.... you are right and I am wrong. I was thinking that if the body was lifted(which you didn't want to do) it would create more room for the tracks to miss. What I failed to understand was that you were referencing the track mechanism rotating on the hub which then gets into the body of the vehicle. My bad. Thanks for answering! Stay safe!

My personal preference would be to add pairs of boat rollers or maybe steel conveyor rollers. Bulk handling industries use larger rollers but you will lack workspace in which to fit them plus their support structures.

I bet u can saw some more off and then put a plate with rounded edges. That would be a lot better and won’t let the tracks get messed up
