I'm Steve - a Heavy Vehicle Recovery Driver from the South of England. Amazing job! I live in Canada and I've been to UK many times, the only car I dared to rent was a Ford Fiesta since it's small, and I've never felt that amount of stress in a car before, I spent almost 6 hours going through the Highway Code and watching KZbin tutorial on the roundabout the night before, and still almost fucked up next day. The roads were narrow, the roundabout was confusing and I had to ask my girlfriend constantly to check if the left tires were touching the curb lane. Watching you move 2 giant monsters in London that smooth is just amazing.

Excellent video as always Steve. Really enjoyed the driving segment, especially the way you negotiated those tight corners at 1:00:46 onwards. Two things stood out that impressed me. One is the way you constantly check the mirrors to check your load is safe and that it has cleared the corners and two is the way you gave a lot of room between you and the bus you were following at 54:16. Keeping out of his blind spot (which a lot of car drivers could learn from), going slow enough to stop in case the lights changed and giving yourself a good stopping distance further along the road. Masterful driving as always. Have a great Christmas, I am looking forward to more posts in the new year ;)

There's a reason (next to lawful required maximums for truck + trailer combinations in length) why we have cab-over trucks. It decreases the turn radius which makes it a lot easier to make the turns in the older city centers. It's also the reason why on trailers, counter-steering axles are very common, even some buses have them, and we used to have Volvo B10m buses which in the articulated versions had a countersteering trailer.

The "knowing your route around low bridges" knowledge can save you from a ton of problems.. My brother and I were at a family party and arrived by train but in the evening there was rail replacement busses on two stretches of our route.. One of the drivers didn't know the roads in the town from where he started and as a result he made a u-turn over 4 lanes mainly caused and missed turn and low bridges that prevented him from getting his direction correct...

London buses often have ferry lifts too, as some have to be transported on ferries for delivery! There was an incident where someone had their head stuck under a bus and the driver tried to use the ferry lift to un-stuck the head. Unfortunately he flicked the switch the wrong way and the bus squatted...

Nice video, Steve! Quiet, safe road for hooking up this one. Very handy air connections right at the front. Such a challenge for a very low, tall vehicle. Kind people (mostly) making way when they see you approaching - one less issue to deal with. Good view with the new dashcam. I now live in Australia where the roads are a lot wider but I do miss driving on those narrow streets which keeps you on your toes. I like to turn the ignition on and shut all the doors once it is all hooked up, it resets all the suspension but only works on the enviro’s. Battersea is fun to get into especially when that beer garden is full!

Brought back some great memories, there, particularly when you were checking the bus's brakes. I remember when Bournemouth (Yellow) Buses got their first Volvo buses. A double-decker driver tried to do a 3 point turn in Valette Road, Moordown but got stuck while at a right angle to the footpath. He was revving the engine all he could to build up the air tanks, but the bus wouldn't move. I guessed his problem and walked out to speak to him through the front, passenger door. Can you see that black button facing upwards next to the side window? I you hit it; which he did . . . too late (you will be able to drive again). The bus shot forward, while I got my head out of the way just in time before he managed to miss a parked car and speed away. He never did thank me for telling him about the BROMS (Swedish for brake). Neither did BCT. PS the new dash cam is not as clear as your head cam, plus, while you were negotiating some close encounters, and on head cam, I was focussing on your offside mirror. I never had that luxury when I used to drive. Without warning, you would switch to dash cam. Where's the mirror gone? It was just like being clipped by the rear of a tipper on the old A30. Great video. I hope you manage to enjoy your Christmastime, wherever you want to be!

Well thats a blast from the past going down the Queenstown road into silverthorne road. Used to do that in the 90s with National Express Double deck coaches when parking up for a break. The pub on the corner was always busy and cars parked on double yellows all the time.

When AEC built London’s omnibuses, very few were ever towed back to depots. Most breakdowns were repaired at the roadside. Indeed, when I drove the AEC ROUTEMASTER, a rare fault was a faulty injector, again repaired at the roadside followed by bleeding the fuel line to restart those wonderful reliable engines. No wonder AEC had the very rare title of “BUILDERS of LONDON’S BUSES”❤️

Watching this video and seeing how far out you had to come, pretty much sat on the middle white lines is an eye opener, it reminds me of a guy I knew driving 7.5 Tonne trucks and training to go up to class ones and oil tankers, he trained on a really wide truck because if he could pass on that (down here in Cornwall) it would do him OK later in his driving. Matey that rig must have cost you a small fortune it's just beautiful. 2 rear cameras and all those tools and cupboards its just lovely, a perfect recovery set-up,let's hope London transport pays well. It's a sight to watch you do this recovery, quite oblivious to cars driving by. You really know your stuff.

Even on regular double decker routes, still watch out for low branches. Route near me ( Grays, Essex) cought out regular driver, no parked cars, branch was about 6 inches thick over the road. No injuries, but windows smashed in. (15-20 years ago)

Great video Steve. I live in London albeit North London and there's no way I'd wanna drive through where you've driven in a car let alone in Recovery Truck with a bus on the back! Amazing skills showing how much space you need to thread yourself through those narrow streets (not helped with the Cycle Lanes being where they are!!!).

Fair play getting in the end of the road there at Battersea,we ve a yard at the end of that road under the low bridge just past the bus depot and with bulker artics you have to be so careful with the front of the trailer and the cat walk and back of the cab!
