My wife and I have been glamping for years. We also love riding and long rides. This past year, I finally talked my wife into trading our camper trailer for a toy hauler. We love to camp and we love to ride. This summer, we're headed to Colorado Springs in July for a multi-week stay, to do the 5-in-1 10k-peak riding challenge with the Pikes Peak HOG chapter. Sure, we could ride to Colorado Springs and stay in a hotel, or we could stay longer and bring more stuff and have our own camper, if we toy hauled. Sometimes we ride to the destination. Sometimes we toy haul. It's all good.

We added a pop out camper to our setup a few years ago. Like 1200 miles to Sturgis. I can leave Sat morning and with two 600 mile days I can be back at work on Monday. Something I don't care to do anymore. Getting older and long days in cold and rain don't excite me any more. LOL Someday I will ride to Sturgis but when I have more time for the trip. I can put the wife's tri glide and two full dressers in and have multiple drivers for the long haul home. Still pull it all with my daily driver 1/2 ton pickup. So I agree Kevin, nice job!

You have good experience. How many feet, gvrw, what is your truck make and model? What down sides?
@DKCustomProducts3 жыл бұрын
33 feet long, nose to tail. Inside is 28 feet long. Trailer is 6000 lbs empty and 9000 lbs fully loaded. We have a 2020 F350 Dually crew cab powerstroke. It is far more truck than is needed for this trailer, but we do other things with it too. We pulled it for over 10K miles with a HDPP F150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost. It did fine on level ground and hilly terrain, but when it came to steeper mountain grades, the power and the brakes were insufficient. A properly set up F250 or 2500 would be sufficient for anywhere in North America. Downsides: Some of the adventure of taking a trip on a motorcycle is missed. Trailers need regular maintenance (got to be handy, because RV repair facilities make HD Dealerships look extremely competent AND Fast) Takes about 30 days of travel per year, where you are saving $ those nights on motels to be a break-even venture regarding costs. (that is if you already have a truck) For us, traveling more than 60 days a year, and having already had hundreds of thousands of miles of motorcycle trips all over NA, and time being an important factor, it is absolutely worth it to travel with our home with us...and be able to get to the great riding areas and do our riding there.

I do not know what the smallest is....but our first on was pretty small. Here's a link to it. coachmenrv.com/freedom-express-select/17BLSE/9224 When the trike was loaded we had to climb over it to get to the rest of the trailer. With the trike loaded we had full use of the bathroom, bed, & stove, along with partial access to the fridge, & partial access to the sink. Here are a few links to some photos of the Tri Glide loaded- www.dkcustomproducts.com/image/ToyHauler/TG%20in%20TH%201.jpg www.dkcustomproducts.com/image/ToyHauler/TG%20in%20TH%202.jpg Not sure if you're asking about truck rear axle or trailer axles. Prolly you're asking about the truck. I would never go over 80% of the trucks cargo carrying capacity. Also, the tongue weight on the trailers tend to be a bit heavier than what they list in their literature. Whatever trailer and truck, get a good, well set up, load distribution system. We use the pro-pride Hensley design. It is amazingly stable.

Cool, glad the video was helpful. We are very happy with our bumper pull and NO slides, no hydraulics. Makes for a bit smaller living space and for a lot less maintenance. One other thing not mentioned in the video, ours is 96" wide instead of the more typical 102" wide. Not a lot of companies do that, and it does make for a bit less space, but is easier towing and maneuvering.

Appreciate the video. Crazy thing is a few years back my wife and I were traveling from Southern California through Palm Springs to Las Vegas via Parker, AZ on up through Laughlin. We hit that same 110+ degree heat at around noon time. I even took a similar photo of the display on my Ultra showing the temp as well. Fast forward to about a month ago and we just purchased our first Toy Hauler and Truck to tow it. Last year we took an 8,000 mile, 11 state motorcycle trip through the Pacific North & Southwest on that same Ultra pulling a small cargo trailer I had built to carry our camping gear. One of my biggest concerns is losing some of the stories and experiences from the road. Do you load both the trike and Softail or just one or the other? Also are toy haulers built heavier in the tongue so when one loads their “toys” it sorta evens out the weight the way it’s supposed to at like 40% rear/60% front? I really appreciate you sharing your toy hauler story and experience with us. Both my wife and I are 54 and our plan is to definitely travel by toy hauler/truck for the same reasons you pointed out. ✌🏽
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
Yep, sounds familiar! There is no doubt that you lose some of the adventure of a road trip when using a Toy Hauler. But, from where we live, to get to great riding areas (like last week we were riding Beartooth Pass and around Yellowstone), we would have ridden over 1000 miles of relatively straight boring interstate miles, AND been in a different motel every night. Our particular Toy Hauler will only fit the Tri Glide, or it will fit two 2 wheelers, but not a 2 wheeler and a Trike. Yes, the frame on most toy haulers are significantly beefier to handle the extra weight. Most toy haulers also put the heavier components of the trailer up front to compensate for the weight of the "toy" in the rear. Wishing you many miles of smiles with your new way of travel. Oh, and we still do shorter trips without the toy hauler...but, like the one we are on now, it is a 6000 mile loop, and during that loop we will be riding all the great areas we see, from the comfort of our own home on wheels.
@HUMINT1 Жыл бұрын
@@DKCustomProducts Yes I couldn’t agree with ya more on having to ride through relatively “boring” interstates to get to the good riding areas. We live in Southern California and seem to have to always travel those same type freeways and desolate areas to get to where we want to be and ride. And yes from my early 20’s say after discharge from the military up until maybe my mid 30’s it didn’t bother me much to have to ride through those desolate areas. You know I’ve been following you guys or DK Custom videos for awhile but for the life of me can’t remember what it was I purchased from your company originally. Do you sell custom relocating brackets for say Dyna Ignition Coils? So they can be mounted below the fuel tank where the horn is located? If so I dig that kit and I get compliments from that bracket all the time. Anyways I appreciate all the videos you’ve put out over the years. For a guy like myself who’s been riding for over 35 years loves to wrench on his own stuff and learning things in the process I’ve found your videos to be very educational. Maybe you could do a video on loading your motorcycle in the toy hauler, and how you tie it down and chock the front wheel as well as if you’ve come into any clearance issues? Since I haven’t yet loaded my Ultra Limited Low I don’t know what awaits me but I’ve heard I might have issues at the transition from toy hauler ramp into toy hauler garage. . The first thing is to make sure the rear of the Tri Glide is not sitting low, use a Convertible Comfort Lift™ that you can see here- www.dkcustomproducts.com/harley-trike-lift-kits-c56-48.htm The other things we do are either park the trailer where the trailer tires are in a bit of a dip, or more often, we use leveling blocks underneath the ramp, with a few more leveling blocks leading up to the ramp for the front tire. For the rear tires we use Race Ramps. You can see at this photo link that the ramp is not on the ground, because we have leveling blocks lifting it up a bit to make it at less of angle. www.dkcustomproducts.com/image/2019_TJ_AZ_Trip/Getting_into_US_Next_10a/98-up%20ramp.PNG In the following video, at the 6 second mark, you can see in the right hand corner, behind Dwaye, the race ramps that we use. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXyYqWaimLapgLc We will shoot some video soon of the a-z of loading and unloading.

Great question. When we were riding (not using a Toy Hauler) on long trips...like the 53 days we were gone when we went up the the arctic circle, the amount of clothes we could carry was limited. So we used motel laundromats and when we were visiting family we used their machines. Also, a big thing was using shirts, underwear and socks that could be washed and dried easily in the motel bathroom. ((Under Armour type is very easy to wash in a sink and hang dries very quickly) With the Toy Hauler we can carry a much larger amount of clothes and usually do not need to deal with laundry until we return home. If we do, same as above.

Following are a few thoughts that I think apply across the board- What vehicle do you have to tow with, or will you be getting another vehicle to tow with. This is probably where the biggest mistake is made, not having enough truck to comfortably/safely tow the trailer. What space and layout will you be satisfied with? Are you handy and able to take care of inevitable little things that need work (even on a new trailer), or are you willing to pay more for a trailer that may have less ongoing (they all have some) work needed on it. What about amenities in the trailer? Tank sizes? A/C and heat, weight load? Will you mostly be in campgrounds with full hookups, or will you be out in the boondocks a lot, totally self contained? The above barely scratch the surface. Oh, definitely test fit your bike in the trailer, both for loading and for space, tie downs etc. Make sure there is enough cargo carrying capacity. Again, there is so much more...possibly even renting one for a weekend or week may help identify what you want/need. We have been very happy with our Coachmen Freedom Express. They have good capacity, and are overbuilt, so even if we are at max capacity we are well under the axle and tire ratings. The build quality on ours has been good (no guarantee it will be on others). It could be better for more $, and we have seen a lot that are much worse. BUT, at the same time that we are happy with the Coachmen, we know a lot of folks that would not be happy with it. No slides, no hydraulic jacks, etc. One last suggestion...walk thru as many as you can at different lots. You can also see floorplans online, but seeing them in person, you will have a better feel for what you will be happy with and what just won't cut it for you.

Hello It looks absolutely fantastic to be able to travel that way. I live in Sweden and am a bit limited to be able to go on tours due to the weather half the year. But I understand that in your country with those distances and destinations, it must be perfect. But you never know when my wife and I will retire so maybe we will take the step of buying something similar. Best and ride safe Joachim

That rig is average size for Toyhauler/Travel trailer. I pull a 30 foot 5th wheel and running 70-75 the entire time.

@@cheby56 That's what Devin (the "D" in DK) drives. He really likes it, and he tows pretty heavy sometimes.

Glad you enjoyed. Yeah, nice having your own food, bed, bathroom with you. The idea of staying in a hotel is incredibly unappealing now.

A diesel, gas, vtwin, old school semis, cars, carhartt blue Jean loving american. Not a computer Abercrombie lover like the rest of my generation. Non epa tree hugger means I don’t support the environmental protection agency and I don’t believe in restricting vehicles I believe in making it friendly and mechanical for the average American to fix like it was back in the day. When times were great gas was cheap when California was the place to live the American dream.
