I made a quick mistake when talking about the timing changes. Cheeseandcereal himself created the first autosplitter for the game. hdc0 came in later to adjust the Load Removal code in 2021. Apologies for any confusion! I'll do my best to improve as I continue making videos.

The best part in those speedrun history videos is when the person is like "This was the final limit to the game, finally broken", and then you look at the timestamp and there's 20 minutes left.

Toy Story 2 has some of the most creative level designs and exploration in video games. Even the pacing is on point.

It's crazy to figure shit out as a kid and not think much of it, then find out as an adult that several other adults spent a lot of combined time trying to figure out the same thing. Good vid btw

You really did justice for the game and all of the runners mentioned. Great video :)

I first encountered the Toy Story 2 speedrunning community when the 30 token category had a TWR to the frame, and that was posted on a non-speedrun subreddit. I remember being amused because I played Toy Story 2 as a little kid on the N64. Interesting to see an entire video on the game's 40 token speedrun. Very cool!

Yo! This is an awesome video! It's so great to see all this history archived and in such a great and entertaining way. I've got a couple notes: It's worth emphasizing that 30 token was by far the dominant category and was the main category for basically every player up until the PC version got more accessible as you mentioned in the video. This is why even today as I write this, there are actually more runners with 30 token times than 40 token times. Nearly all the interesting stuff that happened to the game for a little over 6 years from 2013 up until mid-late 2019 was almost exclusively on/for 30 token, and that's always where the real competition was. While I held the 40 token record for quite a while, at no point was I ever the best TS2 runner during the game's life. That basically went Nyxik -> Brandon -> Capridog in the early days. All of them having 30 token as their main and by far most optimized category at the time (fun note about that history, Brandon and Capridog actually had a tied WR [to the literal frame] in 30 token for some time. Absolutely crazy and unheard of for a ~30min speedrun, let alone a WR). I am glad I was able to provide tools and help form the early community of the game and help set the game's path though. I'm so happy there's an active community now (after a period with some down time). I still watch this community from the sidelines proudly with admiration for all of you to this day. Keep it up! One other small note: We actually knew about the shadowbox jump in Al's Toy Barn way back. Probably around 2016 or so, but possibly even earlier? But it was so precise no one even really considered putting it in runs. I believe I remember Brandon practicing it at one point but ultimately it took a new wave of more ambitious community members to really drive that one into actual runs.

I will be 32 in March and I remember going to get this game from Walmart one birthday of mine. This game holds a special place in my heart and I still play it from time to time. Such a great underrated gem. I may be biased though because I had everything Toy Story as a kid. Covers, Toy Story on Snes, the actual toys, you name it. The first dog I ever got (at 2) I named him Buzz Lightyear. Woody is the name of my dog now lol. Sorry for nerding out in the comments but I seriously love this game lol.

Great video. I actually used to do the spoon skip in Andy's kitchen when I played the game on N64 in the early to mid 2000s as a child. I remember being frustrated by that section because i wasn't able to figure out the bouncing scale that would lead to Bo's sheep. I tried to get up to the sheep by using the spoons and after spamming the jump button on it and was successful. I eventually figured out the intended route.

That's so interesting that TealGameMaster used to run Toy Story 2. He is a content creator known for doing let's plays of Insomniac Games' games and doing commentary of Ratchet and Clank along with one of its developers, but he branched out and does a lot of let's plays of all kinds of games nowadays. It's really fun to watch the history of Toy Story 2 speedrunning, so many clever tricks. This was my favorite licensed game back in the day.

I only just found this and I am looking forward to this. I used to follow the Toy Story 2 speedrunning scene closely and it has always been a game I have enjoyed watching as a speedgame. I saw someone else make a WR history for this video not too long ago and I did find it disappointing, feeling that it was not as well researched as it could have been and it skimmed over a bunch of important stuff. The video length alone has given me faith and I look forward to seeing all the hard work that has been put into the video.

Incredibly comprehensive speedrunning doc! I knew nothing about this game prior to this video and now I feel qualified to be a historian on the subject of this specific game. I really dig the music choices, I have left this video running in the background a few times while getting work done just because the playlist is full of smooth grooves. Loving the comedic skits you add into your videos as well, I am very invested into this whole overarching narrative that ties into your previous video about the Toy Story 3 videogame. You're like a dream combination of SummoningSalt and Scott the Woz rolled into one. I hope you keep making amazing video essays like this!

I remember that I loved this game as a kid! I think it took me quite a lot of time to finish it, because I had a PS1 but took me quite some time to get a Memory Card for it, so I had to essentially Speedrun the game every time, it was beating it in one seating or not beating it XD. Of course, I was probably nowhere close to the time this people take to finish it XD.

Excellent video! Not a runner (maybe that'll change in the future, maybe in creating the first real TAS of the game, who knows) but I've been watching the speedrunning community for some time now. Everyone who is a part of it is nothing short of remarkable. That said, it'd be interesting to look into another overlooked speedrunning community surrounding a licensed game - the one for Looney Tunes Sheep Raider/Sheep Dog n Wolf. Would you ever consider checking it out? That community has also made some absurd progress in lowering record times lately. Good luck and great success with future videos!
