I didn’t get the original VHS release but I did get a copy of a video from a short-lived video tape series called Marvel matinee which included this cartoon alongside a single episode from the 80s Spider-man cartoon and a single episode of the “new Fantastic Four “ series that famously replaced Human Torch with Herbie the Robot. I found this video at a local grocery store in a cheap video bin and I instantly bought it after seeing Wolverine, Spider-man and the Thing from the Fantastic Four on the cover. I can certainly see why so many people defend this cartoon. The animation is truly incredible and it has a lot of cool characters that were under utilized in the 90s series years later. It definitely makes me happy to see more people praise this cartoon for the legacy that it started and I’m also very glad that I preserved the entire collection of episodes from my original Marvel Matinee tape on DVD with the help of a transfer business in my local neighborhood.

I wasn't overly familiar with the comics so I didn't know who Kitty Pryde or Dazzler were, maybe because I didn't see them on the Fox Kids X-Men series. I always thought that Kitty was ostensibly playing the role that Jubilee would play on the subsequent animated version, i.e. the young and naïve female rookie, who also functioned as an avatar for the audience.

I'd have to go back and see the differences but I'd imagine it was was less quality than Toei. One good way to see how much better Toei was than AKON was to see the Japanese intros to the 1992 X-Men TAS which were exclusively aired in Japan only. Those intros clearly showed the animation superiority and made many people then wish the entire series had been animated by Toei. Toei would also often outsource to Sunrise Animation, another Japanese animation studio, but Sunrise got bought by Bandai toy company in the early 99s so perhaps that is why Margaret Loesch and Fox Family didn't use Toei for 1992's X-Men (or perhaps Bandai asked for too much money and AKON was cheaper who knows).

Kitty joining the team is the best introduction to the world that I've seen any show or movie use. That could possibly be because the movies and 90s show used the same method with characters less well oriented to that role. Nowadays, I think someone like Surge would be a good character to fill that roll. Especially if the earlier X-teams act as teachers like in her generation of New Mutants books.
@strifenineteen Жыл бұрын
I mean they did the same thing with X-men The Animated series, they used Kitty Pryde to introduce us to the world
@NegaHumanX Жыл бұрын
@@strifenineteen (Sorry that this response got a bit long.) They used Jubilee in that one. I don't feel she fits the role too well though. Her powers are way more action oriented and her comic introduction showed her to be more competent at the hero side of things than Kitty was (in the beginning). Kitty was just a regular nerdy teen with a loving family and self image issues. She joins because she heard the X-Men were superheroes and thought Colossus was cute. Jubilee was an idealized 90s runaway who dodged cops, lived in a mall after closing hours, and somehow avoided being killed by civilians despite anti-mutant sentiment getting out of hand. They both had the "kid of the team" role but did it in very different ways. They had to drop a lot of what makes Jubilee a cool character in the comics to make her fit Kitty's role. Successfully living under the X-Mens noses and stealing from them without anyone noticing, saving herself from a dog/cyborg/zombie by melting it with her powers, saving Wolverine from crucifixion and living with his feral state until he could regenerate. She was insanely cool but the 90s cartoon version was often seen as the unnecessary kid character. I think they took the wrong elements from Kitty and slapped them onto Jubilee. Personally I liked the 90s take on Jubilee as a kid (and as an adult I think she was over-hated despite being a bit annoying), but with how intense the hate for her was and seeing how much cooler she was in the comics makes me think using her was a bit of a misstep. All that being said, I do think Surge would do well in the role despite being a lot more like Jubilee than Kitty due to the different age we're in now and her not being the only child on the team. Since people don't need an introduction to what a mutant is or who these characters are, she wouldn't need to bridge that gap as much and could instead facilitate us seeing different sides to them.

Highly recommend both X-Men Evolution and Wolverine and the X-Men for these reasons; in Evolution they had an older Logan, Storm and Beast with younger members as the core team. @@Polar_Bear_Ron X-Men Evolution was what got me to pay attention to generational teams. I loved that Wolverine was a teacher, but hated that Storm was one. fun fact: when this is mentioned in the video at around 13:41 there's a frame of Jason Voorhees for some strange reason. idk why it stood out or why I felt the need to point that out, but here we are ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I watched the Pryde of the X-Men pilot on VHS sometime in high school when I had already played the hell out of the arcade game. I didn't realize it was the basis for the arcade game until about halfway into the runtime 😅

Saw it when it first aired. Good times! Thanks for this fun ride back in time.

Memory unlocked: I remember watching Pryde of the X-Men when it was on TV. It felt surreal to see the comics come to life, and tell a fascinating story. And later the arcade game. I did watch the X-Men animated series that followed on Fox, and it was a ride. X-Men 97' cannot wait

The first time I saw the episode was on the original VHS tape release. It was sold in comic shops a month or two before it aired on TV. I recall spending $15 on the tape way back when, which was basically white box with the X-Men in a jumping out sort of image on the cover. I watched that tape a bunch of times; no idea how many, and I don't recall what friend I last lent it (or gave it) to. To say I was happy when the arcade game hit with that full team would be an understatement.

I saw this in 89/90 on TV. Had a VHS recording of the broadcast. Loved it. Watched hundreds of times. Wore out the tape. I also love the arcade game. I also love the 92 series. I have all 5 seasons on DVD. I wish "Pryde" would get included as a bonus feature on some DVD/Blu-ray release.

I remember stumbling upon this gem at Blockbuster Video one day and really liking it. I then did some research online to try and find out where I could watch the rest of it, only to have my hopes and dreams dashed to find out it was truly a one and done thing. Womp womp for me. Also i remember that pizza hut commercial and owned both those tapes, but those were from the first two episodes of the xmen 92 series.

Konami really was the king of arcade multiplayer. TMNT, The Simpsons, and the 6-player, double CRT monitor X-Men behemoth were the unbeatable trio that every arcade had to have to even be considered competent. Dibs on Wolverine!
@RogueBoyScout Жыл бұрын
I don't know about other countries, but when TMNT dropped in Australia, It was pretty much the first game that asked for a Dollar a game (or maybe it was 60 cents originally, but after a while they just figured a dollar coin was actually more logical and psychologically seemed like you were spending "less" due to not pumping 20 cent pieces) It then laid the groundwork for Street Fighter 2, plus like you said the Konami Trilogy that set a new standard for beat-em-ups (Punisher, Alien vs Predator ect ect) and then yeah.. It really was a glorious time, an arcade renaissance was taking place. Graduating from 1942/Ghost n Goblins/Rastan ect ect... I wish someone did a REAL documentary on arcade games, not just the usual tropes, but I'm talking a real in depth look. Get into the nitty gritty of it all. Counterfeit cabinets, all that stuff

Wow...I still have those Pizza Hut VHS tapes. They are honestly an amazing piece of media. Not only includes the first few episodes of the 90's series but interviews with Stan Lee and all of the other writers and artists of the time who made the X-Men super popular in those days. I still have those trading cards as well!

I caught this as a young kid when it first aired and thought it was amazing. I knew of the X-Men but this was my first real introduction to them. I spent the next many weeks/months trying to find it again not knowing it was a one off at the time. For ages I thought I made it up in my imagination. It was decades before I learned what it was.

Ive never seen the pilot but I cant remember how long ive been aware of it. Aussie Logan regularly made the pop culture rounds. The 6 player cab though, now theres a core memory. I dont know why Ive never really associated the two but probably because of time. That and the sega with Vector man were the 2 most in demand things at the YMCA's youth rec room.

Yes, I watched its initial debut. It was interesting to see the later animated series create a generation of fans. I had read every issue of the comic books before any of that.

I waited until the first time it aired and recorded it on our VCR. I saw it in the back of a Marvel Comic and followed TV Guide until it came on. Then worked at Pizza Hut when that TV commercial y'all had for the X-Men tapes was out. Had a stack of them LOL.

Had this on VHS back in the day and enjoyed it, though even back in the 90's I knew that the story pacing/character interactions were way too rushed. Still it was a fun watch, even now I can still recall the theme song.

Haa! 6:40 I totally remember this era, my friend had these when we were growing up. I never got one because it was a bit out of our family's price range to spend that much for something I could see on TV and would probably only watch a handful of times. Still it was an awesome time, I often wish I could go back to it but with the knowledge and tech available to me now. 😄👍

I was so confused as a kid, no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t find a second episode to this series. The funny thing is I remember being excited that I thought I found the second episode, but it was a different tape cover to the same episode.

I remember just turning 6 and my brother was already a fan of X-Men and told there was this cool new cartoon coming on at 7pm that night, about these characters called the X-Men. The minute I heard the intro song, I felt such a huge spark of energy and fascination that gave me goosebumps. This should have been a show and with serveral seasons atleast. It's style and animation were honestly top tier, espcially for the 80's. Sure the dialouge is campy but the roster is great and and animation is actually better than the 90's show, with more consistency, frames and dynamic character art.

That appearance of the X-Men in Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends was mind-blowing for any kids who knew of them back then. Australian Wolverine made some sense back then in the early 1980s as he hadn't had a voice made for him yet and for all a little kid like me knew, he could've just been a Canadian with a very weird accent?!

I remember catching the last half of Pryde of the Xmen randomly one Saturday...and spent the next 2 years searching to watch the whole thing. The theme song was burned into my little boy brain.

I loved the X-Men comics, and when this came out, i was stoked!!! It was corny compared to the 90's X-Men but I will always love it! Im gonna go watch it again.
@JohnnyOmnia79 Жыл бұрын
I actually really liked the pilot and always wondered why it didn't take off. I figured it was because almost no one I ever talked to had even seen it. It came on randomly, so if you weren't watching cartoons on the right channel, at the specific time, on the exact Saturday it happened to be running, it was easy to miss. The quality was good, the overall feeling of it, "felt" like the 80s X-Men I was currently reading about in "X-Men Classic", the animation was great, the theme was pretty cool, even Wolverine being Australian didn't bother me THAT much at the time. Even though I liked the 90's X-Men cartoon, there were things that always bugged me. The animation style wasn't as slick as the "Pryde" pilot, the way they had the wrong team roster for certain well known story arcs, etc. I would really have liked to see what this could have done as a series.
