Nice video as always. From what I could find out, the torque spec for the outer perimeter bolts/nuts is 8 ft. lbs. and the torque spec for the inner bolts near the coils is 80 inch. lbs. But like you, I totally go with the "good and snug" torque spec. It's more natural. Keep the Matrix videos coming!

Are you supposed to be able to see a little bit of gasket sticking out or should it be flush and not visible?

Big question. The kit of the valve gasket came. Curse with the gasket.. but they come with 2 small circular rubbers. What's that for can some one tell me?
@FloydNashFixItDad Жыл бұрын
Yes, those are for the 2 bolts in the center of the valve cover.

Thank you for the detailed video. Update on the leak?
@FloydNashFixItDad3 жыл бұрын
The valve cover doesn't leak any more. I do have a teeny little leak coming from the timing chain tensioner which mounts to the back of the engine of course on the side where the timing chain is. It just inserts with 2 bolts and has a rubber o-ring that gets brittle. It's a very inexpensive part to replace so maybe one day I'll replace it. Right now, I don't worry about it. It might leak a teaspoon for every oil change.

Should I wait for rtv to dry before testing ? If so how long? I used permatex ultra black rtv
@FloydNashFixItDad2 жыл бұрын
That RTV should dry to the touch in an hour and 24 hours for full cure. Maybe take the oil dipstick out and inch or so to act as a vent to eliminate crank case pressure but otherwise you should be able to try it almost right away

You do all this without draining oil correct?
@FloydNashFixItDad Жыл бұрын
Yes. No need to drain oil. It's all at the bottom of the engine.

funny, i just did my valve cover gaskets today, and it was bent like this where the oil fill is, actually it was partially chewed up.

Do I really have to put RTV silicone?
@FloydNashFixItDad Жыл бұрын
I don't know that it's absolutely required but in that spot where the timing chain cover meets the block I think it's a good idea.

it's cheap and easy to use and if you fail at it you can be in for rather expensive repairs...@@FloydNashFixItDad

Valve cover gaskets are usually pretty easy. Take a good look at your engine bay and get an idea of what is in the way and may have to be removed. Sometimes, it's really not much and it's easy stuff. Some newer cars have a ton of stuff over the valve cover. If it's at a level you feel comfortable with, then go for it. Take pictures and video along the way and label everything you're not sure about so you know where it goes back, and take your time. If you get in too deep and don't feel good about things, just reverse what you've done and no harm done.
