How are these engines? Everybody says they’re shit but they can’t be that bad I’d think 🤔 Should I steer clear of the 3vze and go straight for the 22r, 22r-e, or 22r-te? What exactly goes south? I’ve heard about heads, head gaskets, head studs, timing belt/chain, fuel problems and all kinds of other stuff. I really want an old Hilux 4x4, but I can’t find hardly any without this motor in them. My dad had a 1991 Hilux 4x4 growing up and from what I remember it ran fine, but it was just way underpowered. I’m ok with underpowered, I just want to have a 4x4 snow truck I can rely on to get me from A to B

I have had this 4Runner since 2010 and have 175,000 miles on it. It blew the head gasket last summer and so I put a rebuilt 3.0 in. I bought a complete rebuilt engine for $2,500 rather than just doing head and new gaskets. It mainly fails due to the crossover exhaust pipe that dumps all of the passenger bank exhaust back in the drivers side manifold and it gets cyl 6 really hot. You can put aftermarket headers like Doug Thorley on and get rid of that heat issue. Timing belts aren't a big deal with these engines, they are non-interference so even if one was to break you wouldn't bend valves or anything and you can easily do it yourself in an afternoon if you are mechanically inclined. The 4cylinder engines are easier to work on and better supported since the 3.0 is getting to be 30 years old now but 3.0 trucks are cheap to find and 2500 for a rebuild engine isnt that much money really. You can always swap in a 3.4 which is what I would have done if it wasn't for Ca smog regulations being so strict I didn't want to deal with the referee process.

If you're looking at one, you can call any Toyota dealer and give them the VIN and they can check to see if the head gaskets have been replaced. It's the VO6 extended recall. I have a 3.0 with 282,000 miles on it and it runs great. I drive it regularly. I plan to get a rebuild if it ever fails. I wouldn't expect to get a 30 year old Ford or Chevy motor and not have to rebuild it. Not the most powerful engine but the "worst" motor Toyota ever built is still a quantum leap better than the "best" motors Chevy built in that era. I would definitely suggest moving the exhaust crossover or at least heat wrapping it. Do regular maintenance and you shouldn't have have to be fearful of the 3.0 at all. I think most of the people who hate this engine just want it to be something it isn't and push it WAY past it's limits. Expect to go slow and don't try to turn 5,000RPM between every gear change.

Jason Sway Oh yeah for sure I will be taking care of the truck just like I baby my current car. I know they are slow I drive them every once and a while but I don’t need it to go fast I just need it to start up everyday with no issues, get me through the snow, and get me home safely. If a 6.0 powerstroke can be bulletproofed then I’m sure a 3vze can too.

They're really not that bad. I used to own one. But pulling a 4,000 lbs truck is asking alot of a 3.0 V6. In my experience at worst, you just have to really give it gas to get the truck moving. They work just fine.
