Thank you Ozzstar! Kid closed the trunk on the cargo net which got mechanically latched in the lock hook. The trunk would not open. We removed the panel to gain access to the net, cut out most of the stuck netting, then doused the inside of the white mechanism housing with WD-40. My neighbor then pulled hard on the trunk door and the trunk popped open. Writing this comment will take about two minutes but we were worked on the trunk for a few hours. Your video got us up through manually pulling on the levers to unlatch within 5 minutes but we’re stuck for over an hour after that figuring out the jammed net. I may not have had to cut the net but too late now. You saved the day though, thank you so much.

Great video. Very detailed instructions on gaining access to and servicing the locking mechanism. Luckily for me I first tried "normalizing" the system first by disconnecting from the negative battery terminal for about 10 minutes, then operating all the power mechanisms, then the hatch unlatched. Then I followed your advice on inspecting and lubricating the latch mechanism. If that didn't work, I would have followed your access instructions. Suggesting using a paint can cover remover was a gem. Thank you very much. Saved me an expensive trip of seeing a mechanic for a fix.

Just followed your video to fix my wife’s 2008 Sequoia and it worked like a charm. I had to disconnect and reconnect the negative battery terminal to get the lock button and the button to raise and lower the hatch to work. Thanks !

Wow - you saved me a lot of money friend! No rust inside - but after opening it up and seeing that the motor and parts were all still working fine - I figured out that I just need to gently push the tailgate toward the car while squeezing the handle and it opens now every time. I assume that a piece of my daughter’s saddle got caught when my wife was closing the tailgate last week and something in the latch got slightly bent. I’m thrilled to not have to pay to replace anything. Thank you so much for showing me every step to get in there and making it look easy - to encourage non-mechanics like me. Thank you!

Awesome video and instructions. I ended up replacing the Trunk Lock Actuator Motor today and your video really helped me! Checked a few videos and forums to find the problem with the Hatch on my 05 4Runner...,tried disconnecting the Negative Terminal, normalizing and it only would work 2 or 3 times then nothing.. Ordered the unit yesterday and was delivered this morning! (Thanks Toyota!) Watched your video a few times and voila! New unit in place and it's working, plus saved myself quite a bit of money from having a service place replace it! Thanks so much!

Great info...my hatch stopped working yesterday. There are no motor noises though. I took it apart per your video instructions and unplugged the blue connector for a minute or so. When I reconnected it my door worked. Woohoo!!! Thank you!!

I got the part in Amazon for $65, after market. I just went for the replacement of the part. thank you for your help, couldn't have done it without this video, the hardest part for me was taking the cover to reach the part. I opened the door first by disconnecting the battery to remove the cover of the door, anyways don't forget to normalize the module by opening and closing windows and cycling the locks 2x!, it works like a charm so far!

You sir are the true MVP. If you replace the actuator, close hatch. Turn key left and hold for a second, hold key right for a second. Then maybe back. It will reset the rear hatch

Awesome vid. If you forget to put the black plastic lock cover on the bottom, it will not disengage when you test run-and you'll think something is wrong. Just do that and all will be well. And dont forget-the small lever lifts up, and the large one that is brass colored is push down simultaneously.

I’m so relieved! Thank you! I’m a lady and don’t have any interest in fixing cars. I bought the new motor and my mechanic friend installed it but couldn’t program it, so it still wouldn’t work. Then he went MIA. I saw that disconnecting neg. terminal could reset it. What do I have to lose? I disconnected it for 10 min and that did the trick! I’m so grateful. This worked for our 2005 V8 and also fixed the rear doors not unlocking with the keyfob as well. It sadly didn't fix the issue with the aftermarket keyfob not rolling down the rear window. Wasn't expecting that, but wasn't expecting the other issue that got fixed either. Thanks!

Trick to help open the latch if it's stuck without removing rear panel: put pressure on the lower portion of the tailgate (I find using your knee is the easiest), then use your key to lock and unlock whilst putting pressure on it, then attempt to use the normal hatch open button. This opened it for me, but can take multiple attempts to get it.

I was jammed up. Hauling lumber from Home Depot, I used a bungie hook in the back door lock. When I got home, I couldn't unlock it. Tried for an hour. Watched this video and worked like a champ. Thanks for having the common sense I do not.

Thanks for the demo. I solved my problem, you do have to unplug the battery before you put the tailgate latch back on however, or in my case it didn't work. After I unplugged the battery and plugged it back in it did work. Anyway, great video totally saved me $161 bucks.

Great Video, if you are having this trouble i found out that a zip tie connecting those two levers work great don’t make it to tight, and if you can line it up in the little notch of the lower lever it helps to keep it in the same spot.

Very great video, my 97 4runner is simple cable release, I did not need to remove the back cover, just pushed the gate in lifting the handle the gate opened, it needed lub , the latching mechanism can be remove by taking the 10mm bolts out. I use ani seize instead of grease.

Thank you for this video. My problem was a bit different. The latch wouldn't allow the rear gate to close. I don't know how that could happen. I was able to get the latch to function by unlocking the doors and they used the gate latch release handle. The latch released and allowed the gate to close. The mechanism was replaced 2 years ago and didn't appear to be rusty. I checked it several times and it seems to be working .

Good vid. Funny how a problem like this (rust) will affect all the mechanisms during a parts run. I try to keep an eye open for signs before a problem arises, and oil it up to combat the rust. Rest of the hatch looks pristine, just the latch itself. I suspect a lot of dealers will replace the whole thing rather than freeing up the old one. Good save Bud.

I banged on lock actuator and it started working. Had to remove panel. Then large white cover towards bottom center. Had small Phillips screw. Pry it up. Then u see actuator. Also can open tailgate with the lever that's there.

Thanks very much for the helpful video. I was able to unlatch my door with your assistance. In my case it appears that the weatherstripping sealing the back door had come loose and was wedging the door shut. Once I unlatched the door from the inside, a strong push against it opened it. Ozzstar, I did everything you said and thanks it was easy to do. once I got it open and oiled, it opened and closed while the door was "up" as soon as I closed the hatch, it makes the sound but still won't open? any suggestions? it opens when hatch is in the air but not when it's actually back in place?

Great video - Thank you! FYI, I couldn't get the large lever to open (the small lever seemed to unlock the door (hatch opened a little bit but not all the way). On a hunch I disconnected the battery and reconnected it and everything worked. It might be worth trying this first before taking everything apart. The video definitely took the fear out of fixing this this myself - thanks again.

Mine just did the same thing it cracked open but won't open all the way so thanks for the info on disconnecting the battery. I also couldn't get it to shut all the way after that.

@@jayherrin6648 I got it to work but every once in awhile it will hang up again so I take the negative battery terminal off for a couple minutes and put it back on and it normally works after that, I just keep the wrench in my cup holder, ha, what a nuisance because the horn goes off every time you put the cable back on, I had the whole thing apart and lubricated it and put it all back together and really don't feel like doing that again. What a stupid design flaw that was!
