Toyota 4runner is overrated.

The 5th generation Toyota 4runner is a very popular vehicle and I can't figure out why. Come with me for a drive on the highway to see what I'm talking about. The poor gas mileage and lack of power are the greatest mystery to me. Why are people so attracted to something with such poor fuel economy and poor braking. The 4runner brakes are notoriously soft and that's another reason why I think the hype over the 4runner has to have something more than just performance.
Here's a link to the suspension life I put on the 5th gen 4runner:

The greatest things about this car have nothing to do with how it drives ironically. They made a zillion of these, so parts are plentiful and cheap on the aftermarket and will continue to be for decades. Designed to be under stressed, the engine will run forever under normal care. As of 2024, I would say it is the most reliable engine you could possibly get new. Lastly, working on this car is a pure joy, everything is designed to be accessible and there's ample room. I slide under there without jacking it up and can do all the fluid changes no problem. The engine bay has tons of room to work as well. Styling on every model up until the 5th gen is just right; not too over the top. The interior looks and feels great and solidly built all around (at least in my Pro). Sadly it's now an end of an era for these types of cars.

I bought a '23 TRD Pro this year. The 5 speed is definitely a dog. It guzzles gas. But that's not why you buy a 4Runner. You buy one because it is actually fun to drive (maybe not on the highway), it goes off road no problem, It's very roomy for the size, and it's the most reliable vehicle you can buy right now. Plus, the aftermarket is massive for 4Runners. I've driven many full size trucks and SUVs that had worse breaks than the 4Runner. I drove German cars for years. They are awesome to drive. I'm just sick of all the glitchy electronics and massive repair cost. 4Runner till the wheels fall off for me.

I don’t mind mine on the interstate. This thing does well cruising in that 65-75 mph range - that’s when it gets the best gas mileage. If you need to do a lot of merging onto highways and need a vehicle that accelerates quickly, this is not the one. Or if you’re trying to go 80 and get there in a hurry - not the one. For easy highway cruising, this does fine.

The 5th generation 4Runner is purpose built to provide a reliable service for demographics that wants no gimmicks and good old fashion driving dynamics. If you are looking for performance with good gas mileage, towing capabilities, fast acceleration and fast braking…the 4Runner is not the vehicle for you….but if you are looking for good old Toyota vanilla cake that will literally last 2 decades in the rust belt area and 4 decades in Arizona, there is no other vehicle can touch it. As an owner of a 06 Tacoma, all this applies, and I wholeheartedly agree! I have a leveling kit and stock-size AT tires. If I'm lucky, I may get 17mpg. Don't even get me started on the horrible cruise control. The brakes are all brand new, with a new master cylinder and rears fully adjusted. The pedal grabs at about halfway, and then it's a sponge. If there's head wind or any wind for that matter, the front end tracks back and forth. That's with a brand-new TRD suspension too. I've had it for 10 years and never seen a check engine light. It has been absolutely bulletproof, so I get why everyone loves them. I do love the truck for being so dependable but my god does it suck lol. I keep it on the side as I run through projects and flips. The prices now are so outrageous. My truck is worth about 13k right now which is what I paid for it when I bought it. I would never recommend someone spend so much for the Tacomas/4Runners. Much cheaper options out there that will be almost as reliable. Very overrated vehicle. Outdated the moment they rolled off the line. The cabin noise is also crazy compared to a lot of other vehicles in their class.

Tacoma guy here and you're right about highway travel & performance....with an emphasis on ground clearance and geared for lower speeds, no airflow skirting....yes, terrible gas mileage. However it's perfect for small towns, short commutes, backcountry access, tight trails, ski hills, river/creek/lake access, small parking lots, great for towing rafts, sleds, 4wheelers & carrying bicycles, kayaks, skis, RTTs, backpacks and backcountry gear, but not too big to yank or dig out by yourself, things work, the Toyota badging isn't falling off, it doesn't smell like a super-fund cleanup site or burn/leak fluids, I can change the oil & filter for $50 in 25 mins and DYI most maintenance plus, there's thousands of aftermarket/junkyard parts, etc.... Since driving Toyotas exclusively in the early 90s I've never been stranded unlike my Jeep Comanchee and Chevy Impala of yesteryear. We currently own '17 Tacoma (previous Tacoma was a '03), my wife's '02 4Runner and my lawn business truck a 2000 Tundra flatbed conversion and I'd take any of the three on a roadtrip tomorrow. We own all three and we're not rich....what's more is, I don't even have to lie about this! If you want the smoothest, biggest, baddest or loudest....don't get a Toyota....but if you want an absorbantly expensive, complicated, smelly, noisy nightmare go fall for that Ford super-duty. I know yer smarter than we give you credit for, after all you needed some clickbait, but just notice what you see stranded on the side of the roads....all in good fun!! Peace

Driving without it, the vehicle performs much differently. Yup they are not good on gas lol. They don't tow much.. lol But it's way more reliable than almost every other vehicle. The size is perfect. Shorter wheelbase than a 4 door jeep, but more room inside than a jeep or a bronco. Are they over-hyped? Naw, because they do exactly what they claim, and rarely break. I mean we could say every vehicle is overwhelming really.. you love the f150 and lots of people do, but I would not own to save my life. That was my #1 complaint, was the trans, needed at least the 6 speed from Toyota. The downshifting isn’t a huge deal if the gears are closer together, but better if it had an 8 spd. I have an '05 4runner v6 that I bought almost 7 years ago with 192k on it for $5.5k!!! The og owner just had the head gasket replaced. In those 7 years, other than the usual maintenance, I have replaced the battery 3 times, that's it. I am currently at 317k miles. This thing goes everywhere and anywhere I have wanted it to in 9 western states and drive it very hard and usually well above the speed limit and on back roads it soaks up everything even with stock suspension at stock height. The vsc light comes off intermittently (turning off the traction control) but makes the drive off road that much more fun with drifting, etc. Wish I could permanently turn that shit off, honestly. I am about to replace the shocks/struts ( after 110k since the last change)with some bilstein 4100's (I do'n't need a lift) along with some other suspension parts. It corners very well and I have no issues with brakes. The usual mileage is 20 if I go 60-65, 18mpg at 70. Not terrible. I don't use the cruise unless I know the road is flat. Cruise is for the lazy honestly. There are far too many features nowadays in "sport UTILITY vehicles" than there should be as people have apparently gotten soft. I have washed it exactly 6 times in those 7 years cuz I live on a clay/dirt/gravel road in NM and it can never be clean. Maybe the 5th gen isn't as well built as the 4th, IDK.

My 2018 doesn't have a sport mode.. people complain about road tire noise.. and the power in a stock runner... and handling even with aftermarket suspension.. I have absolutely none of these issues...my rig had king suspension..which my rig handles pretty comparable to my wifes Mercedes glc 300 suv.. My rig is way more heavy than a stock one.. as i have aftermarket sliders, steel wheels, bigger tires, big steel bumpers and a roof rack.. the power is decent for what engine it has.. yes I'm not racing anyone.. but i can keep up pretty fine.. and I can take most people off the line still.. my fuel economy is 13mpg unloaded fully loaded woth stuff and people that goes to 11mpg to 12mpg.. lol.. but i could care less about fuel economy.. On the road you are correct.. these rigs and even jeeps are not made to be city street or highway beasts.. they are more offroad champions even over silly fords, gmc, rams, or Chevy trucks... I enjoy my rig on the road.. I'm sure once the engine wears down a bit more and loses more power... I may end up annoyed.. but as for right now.. all is good. Plus we got the Mercedes..which is ok. Not great.. merely ok. Ofc the GLCs are mid anyway.. still better than a Honda though lol

The 3rd and 4th gens are my favorite. I have experience driving all 3. Including the 5th gen’s. The 3 and 4th gen’s feel more lighter and manageable in every day driving, they also feel quicker. Especially the 4.7 in the 4th gen. I also felt the interiors were “nicer” if you will. The dual vvti 4.0 which is different mechanically than single vvti 4.0 offered in the 4th gen 4Runner and 2nd gen Tacoma’s feels more eager and quicker imo. It’s probably weight and transmission mapping. Don’t get me wrong. A 4Runner is more reliable than anything else out there for the money I think.

You KNOW you'll make it there and back in something thats comfortable enough. Its not a TRX, or a bronco but its own thing. There is a reason why they cost so much, and the resale value is over the top. I've sat in other SUVS' and yeah the runner is lacking in tech, and even high end comfort. But for that, get a lexus, hyundai or acura. This truck is an "End of the world" truck lol Also most tech can be upgraded, and the power solution is a "Banks Pedal monster" or a super charger. Man, my Tundra DOES downshift alot. I was surprised how much. Its a '19. Do you have stock tires? I have 295s so wonder if it's more sensitive to that than my Armada is. That thing holds overdrive to the death. I swear a moskito hits my windshield in the Tundra and it downshifts.

@@jonesjones7057 Mine is a 2015, I have 275/70/18 Falken Wildpeak AT4W / just had KO2's but I haven't notice mine downshifting too bad - gears 5 and 6 are pretty close, so if i'm driving around town, I will pop it over and put it in "4", that way it won't shift into 5 or 6 which is the "overdrive". Most people think the + - is a manual shifter but it's really a gear limiter, which means whatever number you have it in, it won't shift past that gear, but it will still downshift to gear 1 when stopping.

However, there is definitely something about it that people that own one really love. I think what you hit on, the old school simplicity is actually what people like and part of what makes it suck at the same time. I also bought a 2010 5.7L Tundra and when I get back in the 4Runner the difference in power is so noticeable. I added a throttle controller that helps tremendously, but it's obviously not the same. The amount of people who use this as a commuter car or grocery carrier is comical. This car only fulfills a very narrow niche.

The 4x4 system is overrated, even with all the options. Not to say it isn't good off-road but compare the system to Jeep's Quadra Drive 2 in the 05-10 Grand Cherokee. Three computer controlled hydraulic lockers. It's a challenge to even break traction with the QD system. Highway snow seems non existent even with the Hemi engine . It's nothing short of phenomenal. It's a complicated system though and expensive to repair. A Jeep Grand Cherokee with a Hemi engine is not very nimble off-road either compared to something lighter like the 4-Runner but gets all the traction. I've been driving my '22 4-Runner through the Appalachian mountains for a year now. It averages a lower RPM than my Hemi GC did and burns much less fuel. Rides better too. I like having the more simplistic four wheel drive system in the Toyota for reliability and the two wheel drive option as opposed to full time four wheel in the Jeep. However, the Toyota doesn't feel as safe in highway snow as the Jeep did. It was like having tank tracks instead of tires. I don't think the 4-Runner is anything spectacular outside of its reliability but I am really glad I bought one so far. Reliability and simplicity is the reason I bought it. It's one of the last newer vehicles with those qualities. Fifteen years from now the 4-Runners will be like what the old square body Cherokees have been in the last few years. Worth their weight in gold to people who want to build an off-road toy or have a reliable daily driver. I had one of the square bodies before the Grand Cherokee and loved it. The 4-Runner to me is like the perfect comptomise between the two. Old school reliable drivetrain like the square body Jeep but with some electronic 4x4 assistance and other modern amenities like the Grand Cherokee.

A 4th gen weighs about 500lbs less, a little less hp, but it's quicker to 60. But yes, keep it in 4th on mountain passes, and yes she will slow on uphills and headwinds, but mine does not need foot to the floor to get up and move... And she's got 210k on the clock. It is slower than other cars, and it isn't as comfy, and it brakes not great, but it just works, and when it 'breaks' it still gets you home and usually it breaks after telling you it needs something for months to years...

Reputation and overrated are two different words. 4runner has always had a good reputation doing what it does, #4noworries. You wouldn’t understand that until you have car trouble. The clue is when you still see 1990s 4runners rolling around. If its so outdated as everybody claims and it’s still made similar to being a reliable vehicle as it has been in the past, you’re just gonna keep seeing many rolling around in the next few decades because they just don’t stop going. THATS THE FACTS. Also to make the driving experience better, all you have to do is shift it in S mode and you can shift your gears up and down or stay in a certain gear as you please. once you put it in S mode, there’s literally a number showing which gear it is in. If you know how to drive a stick, you’ll get a better driving experience on this beast without dealing with a clutch. got 175,000 on my 2015 and it’s a tank

Have you looked into a tune for the 5th Gen? There are people that can tune the 4Runner and change the shift points and makes driving the 4Runner a lot better. You could also re-gear the 3rds to offset the increase of rotational weight from the wheels and tires. The brakes could be an issue in later models but our 23 4Runner brakes are amazing. There are ways around the soft pedal, stainless steal lines, Z36 pads from Power Stop. As far as MPG you are comparing a turbo charged diesel to a naturally aspirated vehicle. If I lived on flat land and high winds....I'd never own one there. Too much body roll. But put me on a mountain trail and it runs like a champ. The reliability is what made its name. If you keep the 4runner then you will be complaining about it for the next 30 years without any failures...still be just as pissed off, but got your moneys worth from the reliability. lol Edit: You and your wife would probably like the highlander more.
