Thanks for the video. I agree with you and Car Care Nut. Just paid out of pocket for my new 2023 4Runner for its first oil change at around 600 miles. I didn’t want to wait until 5000 mile service. Car Care Nut says change break in oil between 500 and 1000 miles. I intend to keep this vehicle in the family after I’m gone. My son in law thinks I’m being ridiculous changing the oil so soon. 🤣

100% agree. I am a big fan of buying things that last, and initial maintenance is key, any engine will have wear initially so sooner the better. I’m also a fan of cradle to grave owning, and doing my own maintenance is part of it, it makes ownership easier cheaper and the piece of mind of knowing along the way the engine and any other components are maintained. Just bought a 23 Toyota 4 runner as my semi retirement vehicle……… I plan to get at least 20 years out of it. Pretty sure that’s easily achievable.

This is why toyota tells you every 10k miles because in about 10 years you will be buying new car. Don’t believe me ? Then go to car care nut channel, (master Toyota mechanic like others have mentioned.he will show you why (1) YOU SHOULD do a break-in period and (2) change oil every 5k miles. Best video on KZbin. I just bought brand new new 2024 Toyota and I’m doing exactly like he says. Don’t need anyone’s approval, just do your own research.thank you bad river for your video more people need to know this when buying brand new car.

My Toyota maintenance guide says every 6 months or 5,000 miles. But I believe in an early first oil change.

Yes that’s good.. yes the Manuel does say 5000 but the dealership will every 10k

With all of the attention to detail you put into this, you missed one important step: Always pre-fill the oil filter with oil before installing it back into the vehicle. While it might not add 100k miles to the vehicle life, it allows the oil pressure to hit optimal range a few seconds sooner than if the oil filter needs to be filled with oil by the oil pump. Takes 15 seconds to do.

I asked 3 service managers at 3 seperate Acura dealerships and they all said do NOT change new vehicle oil until the vehicle's maintenance minder shows 15% life left. I was more then willing to pay out of pocket for the early change.

One thing for certain changing your oil early isn’t going to hurt anything the possibility of damaging your brand new engine that hasn’t been broken in is there, so why not change it? we spend a lot of money on these cars. Why not try and make them last as long as possible.

What you say makes perfect sense and thank you for replying. Why would you think that 3 seperate Acura service managers at 3 seperate dealerships would urge me NOT to change the oil/filter at 1500 miles with them knowing that I was more then willing to pay for it out of my pocket?@@reggie2334able

At start of video “….you’re going to have a lot of metal flakes and a lot of metal pieces in there….” (Looking at old oil filter) “Didn’t see any big metal flakes.” Next statement That’s why it’s so important to do the break in oil change because you just have all those metal flakes going everywhere and that’s just not good.” Anyone see the disconnect in these statements?

I apologize the go pro I was using wasn’t the best quality didn’t want to get my good camera full of oil.. I did find significant metal in there wouldn’t say massive chucks or anything but significantly less at 5k thanks for the comment

From my point of view it is questionable approach. Several points. Break-in oil is not any oil. On 4runner it is factory japan-made oil specifically for break in period. It often contain extra additive like moly de-sulfide etc Break-in period for 1000 miles is too short. I am sure after a change it will be just locally made regular oil. Not a break in japan made quality oil. Shaving is not a problem for very long periods because filter has huge capacity. Oil stability and oxidation is, but it is not 1k mile problem. Also it is 4 runner, so first filter is Japan made. Not those toyota service parts filters that use number and letters in part numbers. Person can even use aftermarket filter of questionable quality/density either limiting the flow too much or letting too much dust/dirt through. Another thought is that changing oil too often you increase time engine works with no oil at all. These are seconds we know till filter housing and channels gets filled and pressure rises and pressure light goes off. But these seconds combine in minutes and hours over vehicle time. Like anything in life it is compromise. So intervals have to be right. Unlike popular believe too often is wrong as well as too short is wrong.

A Google search indicates Toyota does not use a break in oil. My 4Runner owners manual says Toyota Genuine Motor Oil (TGMO) is used in the vehicle. Google "bob is the oil guy toyota break in oil analysis". There is a forum post with factory fill oil analysis which indicates it is TGMO with a characteristically high moly content. Buy TGMO from a dealer and you'll get the same oil with high moly. Buy a genuine Toyota oil filter from a dealer and you'll find "Made in Thailand" on the box. Prefill the oil filter housing to bring up oil pressure much quicker. I change oil at 5000 miles in my 5th gen 4Runners as recommended by the Car Care Nut a Toyota Master Mechanic. He shows what happens to the oil control rings and cylinder walls with 10,000 mile oil changes of owners who frequently drive short trip city driving in colder climates, factors which add up to severe operating conditions. The Car Care Nut recommends 5000 mile oil changes for some models regardless of driving conditions.

You sound like you work for Toyota or have to much trust in people that want to sell you another car in 8 years.
@vladm9096

@@alysonstump9670 Lets get this straight. You buy toyota because you trust engineers that designed this car. Trust parts suppliers that supply parts to the factory based on engineers specs. Workers who assemble the car according to engineered specs. But you don't trust engineers that designed service schedule and do not trust them with their selection of service intervals and lubricants for that car. You know better what is right for this car for longer life. So you concluded that following their schedule will shorten life of the car they initially designed to be long one. Sure it makes sense for you. :)

Yeah they want to sell you another car. So do you work for Toyota or what? Because you are literally trying to say 5k oil changes are worse for your car than 10k.
