I love my BRZ purchased it back in 2012. I plan to keep it forever. It has been paid off for years with no problems I average 29 mpg. I am using an open flash tablet tune. It only adds a few hp up top but allot of punch in the 3000 to 5000 rpm range with no real hit on fuel economy in normal driving. When I run 85% ethanol or E-85 the car puts out about 20 more hp with zero torque dip. The car runs much cooler on hot days. Best $500 us I have ever spent.

Having owned a 2014 and now a 2017 the suspension changes are noticable, but I wouldn't listen to this particular reviewers assessment on the changes. The car is still darty and frisky, still turns in like a dream. The main noticeable changes to the driving is the softening of the rear anti-roll bar and increased rear camber. While this provides more rear-end grip it doesn't stop it from powersliding. What it does do is makes the oversteer more progressive and less snappy. The cost is that on fast highways tighter bends leave you with a feeling of the rear of the car leaning noticably. It seems to occur at a certain load and can be initially a little disconcerting as the rear of the car almost suddenly seems to compress and tuck in. The same feeling in the 2014 meant the rear was about to come loose, but not so in the 2017. You get used to it and learn to love it. Feels more like a point you can trust to put the car to, to know the suspension is nicely loaded and the car settled in the corner ready to push hard. As to the softening of the dampers for ride quality, they are minimal. It stops the car "tramping" and "skipping" on rough road in corners and makes day to day driving more comfortable, but... it is still very slight and only someone who has driven both for a while would notice.

Well, if you'd reviewed the manual with the 5kw power increase and shorter gearing I may have found the review relevant. The reviewer may have decided he doesn't want an 86 but I just bought one and couldn't be happier. I live in country Australia and I already have a dual cab ute as a daily drive, so the 86 is just for scooting around on secondary roads when I feel like enjoying a drive. Underpowered? Not in my book. I think it has plenty of go, more than enough to get yourself into trouble with the law. It sure isn't a drag racer, but on the back roads it's an absolute weapon, and a joy to drive. It was a toss up between this and an MX5, and since it rains here a lot the coupe got the nod. I've driven a lot of cars in my 55 years, but never anything that is so much fun as the 86.

Still a great car. Fun to drive and all, but I really think whats killing the new 86 is the 30K+ price tag. I bought mine back in 2013 when they were just over 20 grand. An excellent price for what you get and within alot of people's range. I saw the writing on the wall when they boosted the price for the "Monogram Edition" and paired it with Scion's haggle-free pure pricing. Toyota wanted to cash in on the infamous Initial D Tax. A sad day indeed. Also, my two cents...If he's reviewing an automatic version, then this is not going to be the sport enthusiast perspective

The new 86 has a problem. Toyota has been wrong in its advertising and reviewers like this one are expecting a 911 killer, which it is not. The 86 like it's predecessor the FRS, is a sports car, a drivers car. That is, not a baby hauler or family truckster. It's for people that love to drive twisty roads or get under the hood and tinker. That IS what the original concept was.The new tweeks implemented by Toyota are damaging this otherwise fine ride. I would've stiffened up the suspension a bit and added a turbo option and that's it. No heated seats, two zone climate control or a useless aluminum wing. The 86, FRS was a beautiful enthusiast car and it still can be however a Toyota needs to get behind the original package, forget the luxuries and keep the price down otherwise this car will fail just like it's doing. Not a good move Toyota especially since the original has a proven following.

@carsguide5 ай бұрын
Given the extra size and torque, I'd go for the 2023 GR86, as it also scores a bit more safety too depending on spec. But if your budget is a bit too stretched for that, any 86/BRZ is fine as long as they haven't been thrashed and have a full-service history. I hope this helps. -Byron

Despite some of the obvious flaws the 86 has for me, this review isn't good at all and doesn't address the actual pros and cons of the car in a rational manner. The 86 was built for a certain type of driver (a niche market if you will) and it's as though the reviewer has completely ignored this fact, making the car out to be a complete failure which it isn't. If you search YT you'll find much better and far more balanced reviews of the car than this 6 minute trash.

And on the other part honestly I live in a trafficed area so I opted for the auto the transmission is not sluggish or slow to shift as this review keeps saying. Granted it's not a duel clutch it's still pretty fast to shift. Manuals great for being more engaged in the driving feel but the auto in this is not bad if you choose it :p Give the car a shot you might be surprised. Best thing about this car is it has so much potential with the mod community. I'm about to change headers and exsaust flash a stage 2 tune then maybe down the line a stage 3 e85 tune to get as much out of the car while I keep it naturally asperated.

ITS NOT TOO LATE. Toyota could save this segment by remaking a new version that typifies the original Corolla Sprinter (AE86). Ironically, in hindsight, it's what people really wanted even though back in 2012 the car industry hadn't realised it. 1: Raise the roof height most people don't enjoy clambering down into low slung cabins like a Lotus, remember in order to increase sales and save this vehicle from extinction it needs to appeal to a larger demographic, people still want a modicum of practicality for daily use 2: Therefore, make it a "lift back" and drop the coupe design, in order to increase cabin space. 3: Return the engine to an inline 4 and tune exhaust accordingly for a similar sound to the original 4AG making for easier valve clearance checks and plug servicing, thus reducing service costs and labour. 5: Re-style and capture what many car manufactures have achieved in recreating past classics into modern day sales winners, i.e Mini, Fiat 500 only this time with a nod to the 1980's simple clean Japanese design, Ta-Da! You now have a Toyota 86 that not only remains a faithful RWD sports car but is now has the practicality of a hatch-back with decent luggage capacity, better ride height, a sweet sounding inline four engine and a very cool 1980's styling cue that plays homage to the original. I hope Toyota at least considers this before its too late.
@AJS86 Жыл бұрын
Umm... Yeah no. You realise the new engine would be a DOHC even if an inline 4. Which means timing chain off for any valve clearance checks or adjustment. My first car was an AE86 I WOULD NOT give up my GT 86 for that any day. Give me a smooth high revving boxer 4 any day over that carby 4-A engine
