As a car enthusiast, it feels almost criminal the way that Toyota let the Celica die. Because it's cancelation marked the beginning of the end for Toyotas long history of producing quality sports, and sporty, cars. And places the Celica as possibly the last new, great, and innovative design they ever produced. Which is a shame, given that much of the greatness and recognition Toyota is known for, remarks back directly to the Celica. Particularly the Supra, the Camry, and even the SW22 MR2, which used it's 3SGE/GTE drivetrain and chassis components. But, it wasn't meant to be... After all of the issues with warranty repair on the original 2ZZ engines the new Celica launched with, due to people over revving them to keep them on the higher cam between shifts, Toyota added that terrible soft RPM rev cut to the engine in later models. This thoroughly gutted it's performance, and dropping nearly a full second on it's 0-60 times. This change cut down on the number of warranty repairs for sure, but mostly by virtue of decreased sales, not improved reliability. As enthusiasts simply walked away to other brands, as the sport compact scene heated up in the early 2000s. And then because of those low sales, they eventually canned the GT-S model altogether. Not deterred by this, Toyota felt that the best way forward was to get the "sporty" crowd to buy their base model GT...after all, it had the same engine as the MR2 Spyder, and that was a real sports car. Ugh... And what better way to make the GT sporty, than to double back tape some garish body kits on to it (which by now we're mostly sold as automatics), and call it "sport tuned styling". Of course no GT-S lover is that stupid, and they never fell for it, affectionately calling the TRD body cladding "TuRD kits". Because no one was going to buy a GT, and then pay the GT-S level premium, for an ugly looking car that couldn't go fast, and possibly even slower because of the weight and drag. After that sales failure, the car was eventually discontinued, and that was that. Unfortunately, right along with it went any other good sporty car that Toyota ever made. They even canned the Matrix, which still had the old 2ZZ power train, complete with the 6 speed manual, living on as the representative of the Celica, despite being it's fat GM built bastard cousin. But even that was too much fun for the Prius Brigade, and it too had to die, sacrificed on the alter of Camrys and Corollas, before their Prius elder gods. It's nice to see Toyota coming back to their roots and making a new Supra, and channeling their inner tofu merchant in the Sub...I mean...GT-86. But it would be even nicer if they would stop re-panelling decades old chassis designs, crammed with more emissions crap and cup holders in them, and stopped borrowed/shared design platforms with Subaru and BMW, and actually turn back to the sports car technology powerhouse they where, making new ground breaking designs in house, that we're truly Toyotas. Probably never happen, but I can hope and dream. The Celica is dead...long live the Celica.

I am a 2013 Mustang GT driver who agrees 100 if not 200 percent with this statement. How in the hell did they not do an 8th generation and give it a really god run? I hope this car comes back. It was the original Japanese badass.Still is.
@gansior47442 жыл бұрын
reason people hate 7th gen is that it has garbage engine. It isnt reliable, which Toyota was and is known for. It does look decent, Beauty is in the hand of the beholder, but I wouldnt say its a good looking car for me at least. It doesnt have cool story behind it, and its probably biggest reason Celica was killed of
@rushnerd Жыл бұрын
@@gansior4744 What are you on about, the 2ZZ (gts) doesn't burn oil and it's the same engine used in the freakin' Lotus Elise. As for reliability, I haven't heard much negative. I see the 7th gen with sky high miles all the time.

I have a 1991 Celica 5gen 2.0Gti 16v. 28 years old yet it still hits 60mph in 8secs dead. 40 to 60 in 4 secs and 30 to 70 in 7.8 secs. And it sticks to the road like a snail. Such an underrated car because of its turbo 4x4 big brother.

I bought a 1981 Celica GT Coupe 5-speed in 1985 when I was in high school. I drove it to the limit and beat the hell out of that car for about 8 or 9 years before I finally sold it to get something newer. I regret that to this day. I have never loved the car as much as I loved that Celica. If I ever came across the same model that has been well-loved with reasonable miles I would pay pretty much anything for it today.

The funny thing is, me and my teacher were talking a few months back about how the new Camry just looked way too sporty and how cool it'd be to see a 2+2 Coupe version dubbed the "Camry Celica", but I had no idea that the Camry was originally derived from the Celica. It'd be a cool return to form if that unlikely event happened.

The main reason the 7th gen failed is because the MR2 spyder ate the sales and vice versa. Honestly they should have killed the Celica and gone all the way with the MR2 with a 2ZZ GT-S option. The MR2 could compete with lotus elise and other sports cars in that era.
