As a 3000GT VR4 fan and owner, I got SO damn excited when it was mentioned in this video. Our cars are ALWAYS left out when the "Japanese Supercars" a mentioned.

Yeah the VR4 and 300zx seemed to not have been able to make it out of the 90s with the rest of the JDM cars. I hardly ever see them talked about or at shows or anything. It sucks because I love both of those cars as well.
@GTContent7 жыл бұрын
Yes, they both are considered the Japanese supercars of the 90's in the USA. But as a car enthusiast, you can pick out the weaknesses (or failures) of a car to find that the Supra is actually the better JDM supercar alongside the Nissan Skyline GTR. If the Supra never had the 2JZGTE, then we might have seen things turn a different direction in history.
@AshyBoneVR47 жыл бұрын
I can't argue with the fact that the GTE is a more reliable engine than the 6g72. The the thing that really propelled the Supra to it's God status is more the aftermarket. The publicity the Supra received form the FaF movies, coupled with an outstanding aftermarket support helped propelled the supra. The VR4 just started getting a healthy aftermarket maybe 10 years ago if that. Because of that, more people were breaking VR4s due to poor parts and tuning so it earned a bad rep. Bad rep means no one wants to buy them so kids are able to get them. Right now you can get a VR4 for around 3-5k. You can't a base MKIV Supra for that. Kids get them, and they break em, and further pushes the shitty rep.
@GTContent7 жыл бұрын
I agree with some points (especially those whom don't mod it correctly or is cheaply done), but the Supra was already popular before F&F. Honestly, from a mechanic perspective, the 6g72 is a nightmare to work on as my uncle had one. He was only able to replace the front three spark plugs and gave up on the rear three because he couldn't get access. I'd say it's worse or close to a 300ZX twin turbo in which I used to own. I hated to work on engine related items since everything was cramped and it ended up becoming not very enjoyable. You'd probably need to take the whole engine out to have better access to work on the 300ZX(I'd highly recommend it)/VR4 whereas you may not need to do that for the Supra. The 2JZGTE had more options (single turbo, twinturbo) in the aftermarket for sure and it was a much simpler engine with room to work on in the engine bay. The 2JZGTE modifications increased power much more than the VG30DETT/6G72 from what I saw. So power increases were also on the Supra's side. I could go on, but I might as well make a video. lol

From everything I've heard the power is not linear at all. Its feels like a v6 mustang under 5k RPMs and the lights up like an R6 after that. If toyota wants the new supra to be a success it has to have the right price tag and power. The 94 Turbo had 320hp so 24 years later lets hope for 450 hp minimum.

Ok....I get what you're saying...BUT...what about the Altezza? I feel it deserves mention during the "successor" aspect of the conversation, Especially given the fact that you mentioned the GT86. Sure a Stock RS200 doesnt pack quite the punch that Mk5 did, but, is it really coincidental that the 2JZ-GTE is such a compatible swap for the Altezza/is300 Chasis? I'd like to hear your thoughts @GT content
@GTContent6 жыл бұрын
The IS300/Altezza was sold alongside the MKIV Supra. It's targeted at a different market being 4-doors and in the US, "luxury". There was also a 4-cylinder offering for other markets and the Supra was never offered with one. The closest car to the Supra would be the SC300 (2-doors, 2JZ, RWD).....also known as the poor man's Supra.

Hey Gary I have a question for you... were their any Mkiv twin turbo supras from the factory that doesnt have the turbo badge in the back? Depending on the year? Or shall I assume that people with turboed supras (2jzgte) with no turbo badge were originally an NA and someone just install the 2jzgte motor?
@GTContent7 жыл бұрын
On a stock Supra, the left side of the trunk will have the "Toyota" badge and the right side will have "Supra" badge for all 93-96 N/A & TT and 97-98 N/A. The "Supra Turbo" badge was only offered for the 97-98 TT in the USA.

The MKIV Supra 's biggest rival is the Skyline GTR R32-R33-R34.
@GTContent7 жыл бұрын
I'd disagree. The Supra's biggest rival is Nissan's Z-car since it's initial design was to compete with the Z. It's got a front engine and rear wheel drive layout like the Z and a 6-cylinder. It's great to know that it (MKIV) is (dare I say it) better than the Z (Z32) and capable of competing with the GTR(32/33/34).
