The biggest issue with storing hydrogen is that it's so tiny as a diatomic molecule it can go through most gasket and seals commonly found in an engine and fuel handling system. To further add to the complications, hydrogen has low power density requiring huge fuel tanks as a compressed gas. If you try and store hydrogen as a cryogenic liquid you have to boil off some of the liquid to maintain thermal volume equilibrium. Hydrogen is also corrosive to most metals until certain metals form a protective layer (if they can form such a protective layer). For this reason, most hydrogen storage is restricted to special industrial facilities. Any hydrogen fuel handling system is incredibly complex and expensive far beyond the means of most automotive applications.

This segment about Toyota's Hydrogen engine is very interesting and a fantastic move to clean up our environment. However, this is like a program I recently saw on KZbin which highlighted all the fantastic inventions over the past 100 years that could have achieved exactly what Toyota is aiming for, but you know what? We will never get rid of fossil fuel. Not as long as the petroleum industry has so much power and give so many millions and millions of dollars to the politicians. They don't give a crap about the environment, only their big salaries and million dollar bonuses. As long as it goes on, there will always be a need for fossil fuels. Toyota may well manufacture this car but may be used anywhere else than the "good old USA".

H2 has the same problem as EV, energy storage. The amount of energy in 1 liter of gasoline is by far much more than H2 at 700 atm and 1 liter of batteries. For H2 there is no solutions since the low density of H2. In batteries, it is not seem possible, at least a breaktrough new undiscovered appears.

As somebody who is concerned about the health dangers of the electric/magnetic fields of an electric motor in a small compact vehicle, I would be much more willing to drive a hydrogen ICE than I would in an EV or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with driving a regular ICE, but if I am forced to convert than I will drive a hydrogen ICE before any of the other options.
@davidhancock9110 ай бұрын
I am all for the Hydrogen engine. EV enthusiasts and governments want to vilify the ICE. The reality is modern ICE engines are relatively clean. Tail pipe emissions are 80% nitrogen and the rest is CO2 and H2O. Li-ion powered vehicles only have a small reduction in CO2 compared to ICE vehicles,if charged by mains electricity generated from Coal and gas. There should be some intermediate steps to powering vehicles, like for heavy transport , shipping and industrial machinery , LNG replacing Diesel . The answer is not Batteries only.

The problem with hydrogen is generating it. It takes more energy to separate the hydrogen from water than you can get from combining it with oxygen to make water. It is called entropy. That being said, electric isn’t the answer either. Manufacturing and disposing of batteries des far more damage to the environment than fossil fuel power plants. In addition, there aren’t enough materials on earth to create enough solar/wind electricity to fully electrify just the US, let alone the rest of the world.

The biggest issue: Hydrogen fueling stations. Last i checked, it was over 150 USD to fill up a Mirai tank for around 350 miles of range. Toyota needs to do what Tesla did, start creating its own refueling stations (like Tesla did with the its charging stations). the more refueling stations, the more people will switch, the more the cost of hydrogen will go down.

EV's are hella-expensive. And I'm not talking about the car, but the cost to replace the entire electrical infrastructure and the increase in electricity costs that will be coming to everyone if we continue down this path. The prices of the batteries will increase as well. After this, the cost to operate an EV will be much higher than people realize. When electricity prices double, mindset will start to change. We could, at least in the short term, dramatically improve gas mileage by fixing the CAFE standards which currently are forcing cars to get bigger and bigger and get worse gas mileage. This is the opposite of what it was originally designed to do, but that was before auto lobbyists got involved. We could also allow BYD electric cars here. They have really nice cars, and some really inexpensive ones too. But politics are again in the way. As for Hydrogen? That is potentially even more expensive. But at least it doesn't require a long charge time. So that's something. And hydrogen (unlike lithium), will never run out. So that's also something. All options away from gasoline are going to be expensive. There just is no way around it. I don't know what the best option is. mass transit maybe?

It's good on paper, but anyone care to tell me how many miles you get out of a full tank? That's exactly why nobody talks about it but everyone oozes out environmental numbers. Hydrogen is WAY less energy dense than any other modern fuel, thus making it useless in an ICE engine, as for the same quantity of fuel you will barely get out of the city compared to a gasoline engine which will allow you to go way further. The only way hydrogen is viable is via fuel cells that convert it to electricity, as in this scenario the lesser power density doesn't matter as much as it requires less energy to produce voltage than to burn it and turn it to motion and also electric motors are WAY more effecient than ICE engines. EVs' biggest problem is the battery size, weight, price, manufacturing, capacity, charge time and longevity, so as they are now they aren't going to replace anything completely any time soon and they are not greener than most ICEs, so they are not the solution either. As stated, hydrogen fuel cell EVs are the answer to both types of engine/vehicule problems. I wish everyone would stop wasting time and money and making a big scene to justify uselessly developping fake dreams just to make ends meat and try to be different... Just focus on the real solution instead of drawing it out forever.

They never said one word about how they keep the water from freezing to begin with. So this area they are diverse into is wonderful as long as all those that are driving are never in an area where the temperature dives below freezing. When Toyota comes our with advertisement and they are showing those same cars being driven in the winter time they will get my vote. And I hope, that companies also start to invent a small system to rebuild gas an diesel cars, to make some important car models, to be hybrid cars. In a cue and within a town, a gas or doesel car must convert to use electroc instead of gas or diesel. But on the road outside a town, gas and diesel is the best sysyem (together with H2).
