A car I haven’t really mentioned, but an important one to me nonetheless. This is our family car, and I thought it deserved a bit of air time 😊

Hi guys - I KNOW I MADE A MISTAKE ABOUT THE CVT GEARBOX! 😂 There a quite a few Corolla reviews on KZbin from the car journalists - but not much from the owners themselves - so here’s a comprehensive, honest owners review after 12 months / 14,000 miles with the car from new. Hopefully it will help out those looking to buy one 😊

I've owned both, and it depends on what is important to you. My Skoda over the years are dynamically on another level, the Toyota hybrids are frankly tedious drone monsters. Where they win is reliability and build, though I've never had any major issues with any VAG car below 100k miles. At the end of the day, 30+k for a small cramped noisy hatchback in 2024 is ridiculous, no matter how hi-tech the dash looks.

If you like to cruise smoothly all the way,then this definitely ticks all of the boxes, If you like punch and instant responsiveness as soon as you tap your foot, then CVT isn't for you. build quality is excellent.

Great review! I’ve had my ‘Design’ spec 2.0 Touring Sports for 3 years now. Does 56mpg on average, and surprises many a car at the traffic lights! I’m 6ft 1, and struggled with the sun roof eating into headroom on test drive so opted without. The falcon tyres get noisy and hard as they wear - Goodyear efficient grip performance 2 sort the ride & noise out massively. Boot is 580l on the 2.0, the ‘sun blind’ protects luggage flying into passenger space, and can be fitted to rear seats when folded (clips to roof above rear doors) for a van-like space. Loads of storage at the base of the rear seats in the boot (it also can be removed), loads of space by 12v battery in side compartment of the boot too. Enjoy it! Toyota dealers are all great as well

I used to buy a new car every two years. I've had the Corolla TS 2.0 since 2019 and it will soon have 90000km on it. Will I sell it? No, because the overall package is just too good. It has its drawbacks: The matrix light is not good, too much noise comes into the interior on bad roads, the interior space is not exactly huge (my wife's VW up has worlds more headroom). But the advantages outweigh the disadvantages: The seats are a dream in the lounge configuration, just made for me. I had back pain in all my predecessors, but not in the Corolla. The engine has no kick like a turbo diesel, but the power delivery is perfect: no weakness when starting off, direct response, at full throttle it leaves many equally powerful opponents standing because the flow of power is not interrupted. The suspension is comfortable (mine has adaptive suspension), the assistants work perfectly. The trunk is huge. The air conditioning/heating is perfect in summer and winter. You NEVER, ever have to worry about anything breaking down or stalling, no matter how you kick it, because it's a bloody Toyota ;). Reliability can also be sexy, I think. I'm sure I've forgotten a lot, but I can absolutely recommend the Corolla. Oh yes: My Corolla (German version) has a warning message when the wiper water is too low ;)

I am as happy as i can get seeing Toyota selling big numbers of touring models. The other big brands have almost all resumed the production of touring models, they all make SUV`s nowadays. I hope they will see that right minded people that love practicality in a car will always buy a touring/break/station wagon/estate. Always better than a small crowded SUV that costs twice the price of a Corolla. Nice review ! Wish you have best trips of youre life with this one!

Top review Gaz ! As you know, I'm Plastics Quality Team Leader at Toyota Manufacturing UK where we build the Corolla. They are a great bit of kit. I've recently got the facelifted 2L GR Sport model for my other half....now comes with 197 bhp and full digital dash. They are pretty quick nowadays with a great chassis. Lisa is not really into cars that much, but she loves it.....and I must admit I quite like it too....plus we get a cracking deal from work ! A great all rounder with the added security of that 10 Yr warranty too ! Whats not to love !! Fab as always bud 👌

Hi mate - thanks for the comment! We test drove the GR Sport but decided the Excel was a bit better for what we wanted. It’s been a great car though - can see why so many taxi drivers have them 😂 Be nice to have the extra power the facelift has but I’m not sure I like the rear as much with the slightly smoother look they’ve gone for. Interesting, I have viewed several Corollas recently. I don't want to put you out of a job, but I really wish they would go back to leather instead of these bloody plastic seats on modern cars! The seat squab bolsters on recent corollas aren't aging very well, they seem quite cracked at a moderate mileage and that's not easy to deal with! Otherwise, fantastic cars 👍

Good overall video; just a minor comment but it’s not a traditional CVT - no belts which is a good thing - rather a drivetrain that feels like one that Toyota describe as an E-CVT. Really liked your comparison with an Audi B9 as had one of those previously so useful for me.

The fact that the rear seat fobs don't fold forward because of the battery pack is not a negative but a great positive! On my old series 8 Corolla I had to open the rear doors, tuck in rear seat belts, pull up the seat fob and remove the headrests before I could lower the backrests. It took over five minutes! On the Touring Sports you pull two leavers in the boot to fold backrests down. It takes two seconds. You have a flat floor and plenty of space. You can even carry items in the rear footwell, something I couldn't do in my old car. What's the complaint?

@@CarFocused Maybe they feel the same from a driver point of view, but the most difference between Toyota Synergy Drive and a regular CVT is reliability, and it's night and day. The Synergy Drive is probably the most efficient and reliable drive train available. 20 years of development from the early days of the Prius. Very few moving parts, no clutch, no gear synchros, no hydraulics, no accessory belts. Two electric motors, a planetary gear set, and a regular engine running at optimum efficiency. What's complex is the electronics around it, but it's been proven to be very reliable. As for regular CVTs (Nissans for example), I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. The only competing hybrid system I'd consider is Honda's. It's a little bit different, but it's well engineered. And yes, I'm waiting for my corolla touring, only a couple of months now (allegedly).

But CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission, it does not specify that there shall be a belt. It is exactly what the "e-cvt" does: it continuously varies the gear ratio to suit whatever the driver wants.

Got my 71 plate Excel TS six months ago (19k on the clock), replaced a shockingly unreliable 2017 Seat Leon ST 2.0 TDI (184) DSG estate, very pleased but apart from the absent screenwash warning light, the car does not auto lock once you go 12mph and above, there are no nets/holders for a mobile phone or sunglasses (there is a massive aftermaket choice for such items online though), the centre console bin could do with a compartment to place coins, chewing gum, antiseptic bottle etc (again, lots of aftermarket choice), there is no current trip mpg function (unless you forgo the 'since refuel' mpg indicator), no load through ski hatch (serious omission for an estate in my opinion), halogen lamps in the cabin (I replaced mine with LED for £6), nearside mirror won't dip when reverse is engaged, horn sounds like a scooter (I replaced mine with a proper horn), buttons on the headliner are not backlit, fuel warning light comes on when there are 10 litres left in the tank, miles to empty goes zero when there are 100 or so miles left, and windows cannot be operated from the keyfob unless you find a competent dealer or diy with Carista. Ride/handling compromise is exemplary though, cabin quality is very good, I find the car relaxing to drive and if you stick at 60-65mph fuel economy easily reaches 58-62mpg on the motorway. 100k mile warranty clinched the deal for me, Seat Leon only once went through services without an unscheduled visit to the garage for repairs. 13k miles in the Corolla so far are trouble free.

All valid points. Particularly the horn and halogen interior lights. Numberplate lights aren’t LED either. We also have an ambient light pack which is great when in park but it all but turns off when you start driving so the cabin is almost pitch black at night when on the move!

Currently on 71mpg on evening roads for last 300miles around town with motorways mixed in. Mostly below 65mph though. Worst I've got is 63mpg for a full tank. And the lack of cubby holes for things like sun glasses is also annoying. However, the car is great to drive, - really good - drove Golfs for 15 years Mk 5/6/7 - drover a hire car Mk 8 on hols and noticed how good the Corolla was in comparison. After all of that, I realised that as good as it is for Spotify etc, it's easier just having my phone on a mount (I'm a taxi driver so it's there anyway). Nice review. Not a car I knew anything about tbh. I have test driven a CHR a while back with my mum in mind. I couldn’t dig the CVT personally, I’m a big fan of the ZF8 auto. Other than a 0% offer, what drew you away from the Audi? I don’t think you’d had it all that long? I imagine if your wife mainly nips around town this would be a more suitable vehicle, including parking in town. But those long family road trips, I’d still take that 3.0 Quattro. 😉

Hi mate, the Audi was a 2016 car out of warranty - it was just on our minds that if it happened to break it would probably cost a small fortune to repair. The Toyota is returning the same mpg as the Audi, has a 10 year warranty and offers way more extras than we had with the Audi. Plus the chassis is far more engaging. The Audi was great, but the Toyota makes more sense for us at the moment.

Did I hear correctly 46 mpg? That is the lowest mpg figures I've ever heard for this car I have the same car but 1.8 drive in normal mode a mix of urban and highway driving and average 70 mpg have achieved 80 mpg, you need to remove them concrete inserts out of your right shoe but this seems to be an issue with motoring journalists the fuel economy just seems pants whenever they test a car, but overall the corrola touring sports is a great car had mine for over two years very impressive far better than any car I've had before, can't understand why people still buy bmw's and Audi when you pay a small fortune for a car that looks revolting and will inevitably break down an a whim not to mention the appalling fuel economy, the toyota Corolla is a far better choice
@CarFocused
@CarFocused 7 ай бұрын
Yea over 10,000 miles we averaged just shy of 47mpg - but the commute is mainly dual carriageway with little opportunity to utilise ‘EV mode’. With more slower town driving without doubt this figure would rise substantially. It’s a great car though, we came from an Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDi Quattro and the Toyota seems a far better overall car for that we need 😊
@spamfremail
@spamfremail 7 ай бұрын
I find that consumption very low too. We have the 1.8 but all the reviews I’ve read say the 2.0 is the same or even better for economy. Yet I’m averaging 62 after the first 3,000 miles. Perhaps this is the previous (4th) generation hybrid system? We drive a mixture of roads, and route. I guess not a daily high speed commute but even long motorway trips it does high 50s.
@CarFocused
@CarFocused 7 ай бұрын
@@spamfremail ours is still on 47mpg - and I reset it after filming this video. I did an experiment with town driving and I got 90mpg over a trip in slower moving traffic over about 10 miles, but as soon as it goes onto faster roads / motorways that drops a fair bit. I’m sure if I nursed the car along a bit more and used Eco mode it would get into the 50’s but I just like to drive it normally. Either way we’re very happy with the car 😊
@spamfremail
@spamfremail 7 ай бұрын
@@CarFocused Fair enough. Just didn’t want you to not be getting the full benefit of the economy it can offer! I do sometimes stick it in sport or just normal if in a hurry because I like the responsiveness and this does reduce economy. It does look as if you might have the 4th gen version if only because you don’t have the updated bumper! But you do have the updated infotainment. Which is very odd to have a mixture of the 2023 model updates! I ordered in 2022 but the wait list was ridiculous and didn’t get in until late July 2023!

Shocking on the MPG, my lease up on my 2018 Hyundai Iconic Hybrid and as they no longer make them I had to look at another car so went for the Corolla as Toyota are the best Hybrids? but every review I now watch they report (and they think its good!) that MPG is between 45 to 55 MPG, I currently get between 62 and 75 mpg and can push 80mpg why is the Corolla so low MPG compared? I can can see why the Iconic holds its value and been discontinued :(
@CarFocused
@CarFocused 7 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t say it was shocking bearing in mind we use the car 80% on dual carriageway where the electric motor is almost redundant. It’s then essentially a 190bhp 2.0 petrol pulling around a good sized estate body. Plus we don’t drive in Eco or anything. I reset the trip computer and did a trip from one town to another and got 90mpg so there is mpg to be had in the right conditions.

Depends where and how you drive. If you engage the regen braking a bit, and know how to cruise in EV a bit, and have the right traffic and roads, you can average 63mpg no problems. In the UK I average 63mpg at worst across a full tank - I drive a taxi about 800 miles per week. Equal hours dual carriageway/motorway to suburbs and city etc. if you go very easy and conservative on quiet roads you can average 72+ mpg. That's on quiet early morning roads and night driving. Had a 2020 and a 2022 model both 1.8 sports touring in the basic spec with 16inch, continental tyres. As long as you don't have bumpy pothole streets it's a lovely smooth drive. Basic spec is pretty decent. Could only be better with lexus level leather interior and quiet cabin.

If You mostly drive at constant high speed the hybrid system just adds weight and does not help at all against resistence from air, soft and wet roads and so on. It excels when the car is moving freely and most power use is acceleration and climbing to higher ground, that energy can be recovered and if you get a habit of coasting when it is convenient you can as said before drive on fumes.

I've been waiting over 15 months for this car but overall I am disappointed. Have his car now for 6 months. Pros: - it's fuel efficient no doubt here - the acceleration is very well - suspension and the grip in corners is great Cons: - with high speed the steering wheel allows for too much turning. It is not safe nor brings the pleasure from driving - the interior is so loud, I need to turn up the volume of the radio/music to hear it well - the main display is poorly optimised. Looking for settings or generally using it is a pain - not enough space on the back of the car - steering wheel might be more "sporty" - the general feeling of the interior is that you are in a moderate car. Not enough compartments and holders. The ones in the car are not well optimised. If you want a fuel efficient car to move from point A to point B it's ok. But if you enjoy driving a car then do not buy it. Driving this car is boring.
