Thanks for the feedback on the video, everybody! Please note I made a dopey mistake in the video regarding the Corolla's gearbox! This has now been edited out of the video - as a couple of you picked up, the eCVT on the non-hybrid Corolla uses the helper gear for low speeds, the hybrid version doesn't!
@AC-le9wv
@AC-le9wv 4 жыл бұрын
CarExpert 👏👍 The hybrid has much more low-down torque due to electric motor so that there is no need for the launch gear. The eCVT also does not have belt so that there is no rubber-band feels. Furthermore, the engine in the hybrid use Atkinson-cycle, which is also slightly different.
@froggy0162
@froggy0162 4 жыл бұрын
It’s also why the hybrid system is so popular for taxis - the hybrid transmission has bugger all moving parts compared to any conventional transmission, so they just go forever - a nice change for cab drivers used to all the things that constantly break on the old Falcons :)

I rented a Corolla hybrid and I was surprised at just how good it was to drive. Very smooth and comfortable, more than enough performance for real-world driving and I got 5.1 l/100 km where my Hyundai i30 gets low to mid 8s. I don't care about the back seats as I never use them, but the small boot, lack of storage in the cabin and the tinny-sounding stereo were weakness I'm not sure I could live with. Maybe a RAV4 hybrid would be worth a look. I like Toyota hybrids... I must be getting old...

I've got mine just about 2 months and I love it!! 2.0 184 hp pearl white with black top. Everyone's turning their head haha! Its a fast and fun car, while also very economic. I've never had hybrid before and compared to classic turbo diesel or petrol engine, It just brings some new elements to the driving experience. Its almost like a driving in a video game...

Love this colour combo. My parents just got the entry level hybrid sedan and it's a seriously impressive car. Plus there's a noticeable amount more legroom in the rear compared to the hatch. It's a shame Toyota aren't offering the hybrid in ZR sedan guise.

Thanks for your review, pretty spot on. I own the 2.0 litre version, and use to get to work and back, about 45km one way. I average 6.8 l/100km, and I really like the drive. A little more power would be nice, after coming from a f30, and a GTI before that. All in all I am very impressed with the ride comfort and safety features. The rear leg room does suck, if I need more leg room, I use my Tundra crew cab. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 stay safe.

I just wanted to say when watching your review you commented that the speed sign recognition in the Corolla wasn’t very good but working for Toyota I would say that it’s actually quite smart because when you run into road works the navigation system will still you that it might be a 110km zone when it actually is maybe on a 60km zone, the SSR system will detect that and it will be right there on your dash or head up display potentially saving you a nasty fine......you can also in both this and the RAV4 speed match your radar cruise control to the outside speed at the touch of a button ( very handy ) feature the dash also has the ability to change between analog and digital display

Thanks for the review. I sat in the car yesterday and I'm just over 6ft. I adjusted my front driver position and I was overly generous with room. When I sat in the back seat I had plenty of room for my knees. I felt very comfortable in there. I felt the front driver seat had plenty of room and I didn't feel squashed up at all. I compared the front seat to the Rav4 and couldn't really tell any difference. Theonly thing that is small is the boot. It's fine for shopping but you'll need to put the seats down if you have a few big luggage bags.

Paul, Thanks for 'standing up' for tall people. Here in Canada we have renamed this undersized TNGA platform the TNJA - Toyota New Jockey Architecture. Akio Toyoda seems to have forgotten that some of us do grow over six feet tall. The Corolla Estate/Wagon would be much more useful for adult passengers and cargo. Sadly, it seems Australians and Canadians alike are denied the best Corolla model and are forced into a RAV4 or something even larger.

CarExpert It’s rare to find many Japanese people over 6ft tall. I’m guessing they’ve designed their TNGA platform for the Japanese market first and foremost, with the rest of the world coming after. I’m 6”2 and just about manage to get into the driver’s seat of my 2018 Prius. Occasionally I bump the cruise control stick with my legs when getting in but that’s Toyota for you.

Hi paul, love your videos. Very informative and entertaining to watch. It is as though I have test drived all the cars you've reviewed myself!! :) There is one thing that I hope you could add to your future reviews and that is the sound of the horn of the car you are reviewing. May be it's just me only, but I feel the sound of the horn is just as important in my car purchase decision making. For example, I am a big fan of the ultra reliable Corolla, but its horn has put me off my 'consider' list. Anyway, keep up the good work you and your team at Car Expert are doing. I have the 2019 Corolla hatchback with the 2.0 L petrol engine making 169hp. I love its styling and the driving is not bad, but could use 10 or 15 more hp. My main complaint is the limited back seat room and the small boot. I wish Toyota would offer a hybrid in the US bc I would have gone for that model. Anyway, if you think the 18in wheel makes for a comfortable ride, then you will have to try the 16in wheel. It feels like driving in a Camry

I find it interesting that the hatch is rated at 4.2L/100km and the sedan at 3.5L/100km. I wonder why, maybe a larger battery? Surely not just aero. The leg room doesn't look great, no better than my old Barina. If I was looking it'd be either the Corolla for the hybrid despite the poor rear space/boot/no spare, or the i30 and not get a hybrid or IRS. The Corolla is a good looking hatchback though.

Thank you for the great review as always. Is there any information regarding the battery life and cost of maintenance? 20 years ago, I was told that Prius' battery was only good for 80000 km, and the replacement cost would be around $8000-$10000, about one third of the new car purchase price. If that's the case, it does not make any economical sense by going hybrid. Obviously, it has some advantages for the environment.

In Holland, when choosing the 1.8 hybrid you don’t get the fake exhausts, it would be red in your case. If you get the 2.0 High Power Hybrid, you will get the exhausts, to show you’ve got the 2.0 :). Luggage room is really quite shit though as the batteries of the 2.0 take up half of the boot

Hey Paul, you continue to grab and rough up the centre console bins in all your vids as a build quality check. Nobody in the real world does that! I’d be way more interested to see if there were any rattles during driving and the like. Otherwise, keep up the good work dude.

my 2015 Auris hybrid 136 hp got me two fillups with 3.34 and 3.37 l/100 km - way lower than the toyota stated 3.8l//100 km. i have no issues believing that this will drop to 2.something if you know how to drive it properly.

Drive one of these all the time, I'm 185cm and I cannot see out the rear mirror without ducking down. Because all I see is backseat when sitting normally, can't swivel the mirror up anymore to point it at the window and the seat doesn't go any lower. Kind of disappointing really, gonna get a bigger car

Wish we had the Corolla hatch hybrid in Canada instead of the Corolla sedan that we do have. Toyota should throw in the eAWD from the Prius as an option on the Corolla Hybrid while they are at it and I bet it would be very popular here.

Just like to point out the eCVT is NOT what explained in the video. The CVT described in the video is for non-hybrid Corolla, which has a launch gear, like the 1st gear in a manual box to increase the efficiency and drivability. The eCVT uses planetary gears combined with electric motor. It’s a totally different system and nothing like a normal CVT. Otherwise, it’s a good video. I am waiting for the Corolla Cross, which will have much better internal space yet still very compact of overall dimension.

Engaging and CVT do not coexist. I get it makes sense for Hybrid but Hyundai says CVT not required. Love the look of this generation Corolla, bring on the GR model!
@CarExpertAus

Actually works well with the hybrid system, it picks up the torque hole while the CVT winds up.
@dingbatt
@dingbatt 4 жыл бұрын
It’s an eCVT, there’s a subtle difference. Electric motor/generators not belts and Toyota would do themselves a favour if they just called it a “Hybrid Synergy Drive”. There’s even a badge on the exterior of Toyota Hybrids that says that. The same tech is used in Lexus hybrids and has been licensed to Ford for use in the new Escape hybrid. Hyundai don’t have a licence to use the patented technology hence their dismissal of it.

Well it's the first time a Corolla has even slightly appealed to me, I think they look pretty smart and like the LED lights at night. This red looks cool with the black roof but would be hell of a lot better with a PANORAMIC roof. I still think Peugeot make the best hatches around but they need to offer an electric/hybrid version.

@bigchief2331
@bigchief2331 4 жыл бұрын
@@froggy0162 All their current cars are great. The 308 is the best hatchback available in Australia by far. Just a shame it is ignored and most people don't even cross shop it. Driving experience, comfort, features and ergonomics are unrivalled. I know there is the new e-208 and hybrid 3008, Peugeot dealer told me the latter should be here by end of year but that was pre-COVID so who knows. E-208 looks like a ripper car but pricing scares me and it's probably a bit small. I really do hope that Peugeot succeed here in the coming years, and that the government offers incentives to entice people into electric cars.

How would you rate this against a golf for built quality ? And the base golf1.4 petrol does give around 6-6.5 in the city drives, is it worth spending the additional 8k over a base golf ? you could fuel all your life for 8k in a hatch back. Your thoughts ?

The Golf is a really nice car, but this is more interesting. The Golf has kind of become what the Corolla was, just a little plain. But the new one looks to be quite promising, I'll hold my judgement until I have a drive of it.

possibly a dumb question but what would actually feel quicker.. a hybrid with more torque and less power or the regular ICE with more power and less torque?
@CarExpertAus
@CarExpertAus 4 жыл бұрын
Never a dumb question around here! Torque is the push in the back you get when accelerating. The more torque the car produces, the greater that push in the back and the perception of power. Power is just a product of torque and engine speed, so ultimately the more torque you have, the more power you have, proportional to engine speed.
