I’m a 39 year master mechanic and I did work at a Toyota dealership (factory trained) but I must say that the diff service takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes from the time that you get the work order, rack the 4 Runner , drain then fill with the proper fluid (probably 80-90 w gear oil) then give the vehicle a once over. A short test drive and then park it.

Interesting. I can wash and dry and cut my own hair. I can clean my own house. I can do my own gardening. However, I will not wash my dog, even though I can. I will pay whatever it takes to wash my dog because I make such a mess. It’s awful and I don’t enjoy it and the dog doesn’t enjoy it and it doesn’t come out right. There are certain things in life that our neighbors can do better than we can. Those tasks are worth the cost.

I was a Toyota tech for several years. Fluid changes and all maintenance on time are going to give your toyota, especially in Florida, a very long life. 300 k easy. Second, always use genuine Toyota filter and parts. Why, not all oil filters are created equal. I have seen oil filters that caused engine failure, right out of that jiffy lube place. Second, it is cheaper to buy the right part once then 2 or three times.

As a certified old guy, I totally get not wanting to do some things yourself, because the older you get, the more time becomes more valuable than money. I always take my 4Runner to the dealer for the $65 oil change and read my Kindle or go across the street for breakfast while they do it. That said, I do my diffs and transfer case myself since I have a nice shop and I can get all three done in about an hour and a half, and I can use the fluids that I prefer, vs the 55gal drum stuff at the dealer. The $100 is not a bad price though. The rear diff takes nearly three quarts, and the Redline I use cost $22/qt (something like Lucas is perfectly acceptable at near half the price). The crush washer kit (for both diffs and the TC) is $15. So $22x3 + $5 for the rear diff crush washers is $71. You're not saving that much doing it yourself. As long as your dealer has good techs, there's nothing wrong with letting them do it for $100.

I do some work on my car myself but other things I don't. I don't have a garage and a dirt driveway. We have these big thick boxes called Gaylords at work. They are about an inch thick. I cut a piece about 4' long and lay on it when I work on my car. I have some ramps to get it high enough to change the oil. I also have a floor jack and jack stands.

Shop around Tim with other local Mechanics, If the price is not that much cheaper than the Dealer then do it at the dealer. Also ask the service person to give you a discount usually 10%. Try and stick to the same service guy at the dealer everytime you go for maintenance. Sometimes the dealer is cheaper but not always especially for major things. I inquired about a radiator flush for my lexus es350 at the dealer it was surprisingly high. I went to an independent mechanic that specializes in Lexus and it was more than half the price cheaper than the dealer. Got an oil change and the flush for cheaper than just the flush at the dealer.

I recently change the oil (Supertech brand) and filter (Denso) in my RAV4 for $30. Two weeks later I carbon cleaned the engine, changed the oil and filter, and performed radiator service in my Camry hybrid for a total of $150 in parts and fluids. The estimate was $900 for these services at the local Toyota dealership. I had to invest about $400 in tools six years ago. I still think that my investment has been worth it.

I’m a “car guy” who does a lot of his own work and changing the differential fluid is a job that I am happy to leave to a shop! While the task itself isn’t complicated, it tends to be an absolute MESS to do in your own garage! I grew up in Delray in the 60's and 70's and knew the family that owed the dealership back then. Our family has put over 230,000 miles each on three different Toyotas so I'm educated on how to take care of them. One thing Ive seen is dealers tend to want you to do things like change the diff oil much sooner than what the owners manual suggest. That's how they make money. Our dealer here in TX charges $55.00 for oil change (SYN) but usually they have other services they expect to sell you.Our current Toyota is an 04 4 runner with the 4.2L V-8 235,000 miles

I agree with you 100%. Unless you are capable of repairing your vehicle yourself, call the dealership first and get an estimate. At least they can troubleshoot the issue for you. In addition, the dealership's labor hours are based on the job, not what the Auto Repair thinks they can get away with charging. My son has a 4runner in Phoenix AZ. He refuses to go to the dealership and continues to pay ridiculous amounts of money. $1,100 to change alternator, $1,800 to change front brakes and rotors and the list goes on. At least a dealership based the job on hours, original parts and small warranty. Of course, the dealerships are getting backed up. That might be a consideration. If you have a local shop that you trust, then go for it, but a telephone call to the dealership is well worth the effort.

So, soooooo happy I live in Greece for that matter. I get a full service on my Corolla (oil, filter, air filters and spark plugs) for less that a 100 Euros and labor is just 30 euros something. Although i can do these things myself I just avoid the mess by trusting an independent mechanic to do the job. Actually that same guy has become my best friend over the years, as i know him since he started his business back in 2004. Labour is dirt cheap here not just for mechanic work but for body work also. Many cars that would be labelled as "totalled" in your country are being fixed here for a fraction of the money an American body shop would ask. Nice one Tim, your videos are so informative for me, as I can compare USA with Greece in many aspects. Love yor work, adore your style! 👌👌

I have a 2011 Highlander and was recently quoted these prices by my nearby Toyota dealer: Transmission fluid flush and install new fluid: $525 Transfer case and rear differential fluid change (they only hold 1 quart of gear oil each) $246 engine oil and filter change w/synthetic oil: $109 and another disappointing thing I learned: they don't use the "recommended" Toyota fluids They use some off brand I have never heard of before: BG Ultra Guard fluids. I wound up going to an independent shop. I passed on trans service for now so I had the rear diff, transfer case and engine oils changed for $125 for the labor only. I provided the fluids, total cost about $70 so I saved about $160 !

The real problem is that many auto centers are dishonest, whether it’s a dealer or an independent shop, and they cut corners and do not do the repair or service properly or at all. For example, when they do an oil change, they may not change the filter or some other cutting corners. I have even heard stories, where they do not do the service at all, so you end up driving your car for many more miles and it’s actually doing damage to your car. Today there’s so many liars and cheats and it’s hard to trust anybody these days there’s so much evil in this society. For example, if I go to get my CVT transmission fluid changed, and I want the filters inside the CVT to also be changed, how do I know that they actually change the filters and did not just tell me they did when they skipped it because it was an extra 15 minutes to open the plate and change the two little filters. There is no effective way to know that the mechanic did the service as stated and charged for this is a sad world when you can’t trust anyone anymore even professional, so-called mechanics. Whether they are dealers or independents. I have had people tell me to ask the mechanic to see the used parts, but that is basically telling the mechanic that you do not trust them, and you think they could be a scammer, which is not a good way to establish a professional relationship.
@4.0gpa44
@4.0gpa44 4 ай бұрын
I agree lack of trust is a huge issue. Even if you asked for filters, what's to say they wouldn't have grabbed one from another person's car that was a similar model and give them to you. Other than paying for oil analysis after each change, which is lot of work and cost, unless you do all your maitenance work yourself, in most cases you can't be totally certain. You could try writing with a sharpie on an inconspicuous region of the outside of the oil filter. If it's still there afterwords, the filter wasn't changed.

They will flush or refill your radiator, change your transmission fluid if accessible, and top off all of your fluids. One guy even pointed out a power steering leak so that was helpful. I over paid for an extended warrant for my truck and included are life time oil changes (4 a year). Starting to feel better now about the free oil changes, because they are $80 these days.

Oil change place destroyed my tundra engine, never again
@thnksno
@thnksno Жыл бұрын
@tedbell4416 I hate that Toyota uses that cartridge filter on the 5.7L. Especially since it has plastic housing going into metal threads. That's a recipe for disaster going to a non Toyota certified shop. We have a 2023 Rav4 and a 2022 Corolla along with my 2020 Tundra. I had 2 Tundras prior that were flex-fuel so the recommended oil change interval was 5,000 miles. This 2020 isn't flex-fuel so they now want to change the oil every 10,000 miles, the same as the Rav4 and Corolla. I don't trust that interval. So, even though the newer cars have ToyotaCare, we still change the oil every 5,000 miles. For the Tundra, it costs $75, which is the same as the cost for the Rav4 and Corolla. Lol! The Tundra takes 8.5 quarts of synthetic oil. The Corolla takes 4.9 quarts and the Rav4 takes 4.8 quarts (and has a bigger engine than the Corolla?) So it appears they're giving away roughly 3.5 quarts of oil for free on the Tundra.

Sarasota Tim, St. Augustine Joe here. Now you are in my wheelhouse. I owned an auto repair shop for 42 years, just sold it in June. $97 is very fair for rear diff service. $172 is out of line. However, you almost answered your own question. You said you waited at the dealer for 4 hours for an oil change. This would have never happened at my shop. If you make an appointment time with us, that is the time we service your vehicle. Dealers take as many cars in as they can get and do the service as they can. You are correct that for $97 it isn't worth doing yourself, UNLESS you already have all the equipment to do it. Your diff would only hold about 2 quarts of fluid ($30) and the nice thing about Toyota trucks is that they have a drain plug, unlike most domestics. Most auto parts stores will take your old fluid if you buy the new from them. Synthetic oil change at our shop on your vehicle would have been $79.99, rear diff service $99.99. But you would be in and out in about an hour. For maintenance services sometimes the dealer will be cheaper, as their volume is higher. But for mechanical repairs, a reputable independent shop will almost always be cheaper, and faster.

Make sure they are using synthetic gear oils. Also are they using 75w85 or 80w90 or 75w90. If you are still under warranty you should be using 75w85 as the others could void your warranty, even if the dealer does it. Also you should do the front, rear and transfer case all at once. Had my done at 60k at my Toyota garage using Red Line fluids, the dealer was much higher in price using the correct fluids from bottles, but a little less using bulk 75w90. Always ask what fluids they use. I have used the dealership for years and find it more affordable PLUS they keep my cars running like new. My 10 year old Altima looked and ran like a new car when I sold it to a family member and got my newer SUV with more bells and whistles (wanted all the new safety and driver assisted features). Recently had an issue with my battery after 3 years and my dealer replaced it for free. In the past when I purchased a battery on another car if it didn't last the average length of use they would prorate the new battery. I like I can make an appointment, they'll wash my car and if they would need to keep my car for any bigger service work I can get a loaner car from them for free. I do use a private auto mechanic for my old pickup but the guy who works on it worked for a dealership for almost 20 years. I also think local mechanics are having trouble finding and keeping mechanics! So many businesses of every kind in my area are short staffed still and everyone is hiring.

Transmission fluid stayed because they said it is made for the life of vehicle…..thing runs like a top.

I took my car to St Lucie Battery and Tire for new tires, and when I got on I95 accelerating to 70mph My car shook and once I got to 70 mph then it stabled off, but every time I approach 70 it shake shake shake makes me nuts took it back to the St.Lucie battery and tire. They checked it out said that it wasn’t the tires but I’ve never had that happen before. I’m the only person that has ever driven my car. I have put many new sets of tires and have never experienced anything like that. I agree with you Tim I think they torqued it too much but I can’t prove it I had been in that St. Lucie tire and battery before and had them put on a new starter. It’s a 2013 Honda CRV, needless to say I get free tire rotation there, but I will not ever go back there. They have been taken over by a different management team than when I did service with them before you really have to watch that stuff just as you’re doing with your vehicle. Stay safe on your trip !!!

That's normal Mr. Tim. A lot of ppl assume that every service at the dealership is more expensive than Indy shops (which isn't true 😂), it simply depends on the issue. Take it from someone who's learned via trial and error and from painful and costly experiences. The dealership has competitive pricing (preventative maintenance like oil changes tend to be cheaper and they always offer complimentary services in that price as well) and certainly does quality work since they are experts in that specific make. I like indy shops, but I'm more fond of dealerships since their main job is to get the vehicle back to functioning like it was when it was brand new. I'm one of those guys that like to see things for myself rather than adopting the experiences of others. I hope that helps.

It probably takes 2 quarts of gear oil, $25 total. Easier than changing the engine oil. Anyway many years ago the dealer kept telling me I needed to change all the gear oils. Front and rear diff, transfer case and manual transmission. They quoted me $90 each. I looked at it, decided it wasn't that hard, did it myself. Next time I went to the dealer for an oil change, they said I needed to change all those oils. I said I did. The look on their face.... came up with a BS answer about it must have been some residual oil they were seeing.

You are so right about checking the dealership, it used to be very expensive to get your vehicle serviced at the dealership and cheaper at an Independent shop. Maybe dealerships have learned thru can retain customers better if their prices are better.

After getting crushed at my local Honda dealership for 10 yrs and getting the same treatment from a couple of independents I finally found an independent Honda/Acura garage. The owner was a Honda mechanic for 10 yrs before venturing out on his own. My dealership charges $185/hr now thanks to California.. My independent charges $115 and insists on using OEM parts whenever possible.

That’s a great price for the service. Walmart sells full synthetic diff lube in quart squeeze bottles. They run either $10 or $15 each, depending on weight. A couple crush washers, you are $30-40 in materials assuming you have tools and a drain pan. Or you pay the $97 and move on with life😂

Tim, Seems like you have a good dealership service department based on that price. I would continue with them for all of your service. Their technicians see Toyotas everyday and when you’re a lot less likely to have an issue down the road. Have you seen a video on the oil change procedure for your 4 Runner? The screw-on oil filter has been replaced with a canister-type filter and is more of a pain to deal with. You will not really save that much money going to Walmart and having them do your future oil changes and you won’t get OEM filters there either.

We had an old Prius, check engine light on, my Wife went to dealership and they basically told her the car was going to kill her if she didn't get x amount of work done, I went the next day to challenge them, it was TOTAL BS. That car FYI is still running in another state, all it needed was a battery. So Tim next time send Tammy with the car and watch the line of BS they give her. Sad to say this still happens but it does. Also do a follow up on the $97 diff oil change and share with us all the OTHER stuff they may find wrong that needs attention.

I had a tire on a new car that was very low and took it to my dealer. The guy tried to sell me a tire. It was low, but still drivable. I called Sam's Club to price a tire while the mechanic was standing there. I told him, if the tire is bad, he can fill it and I'll drive it a bit farther to Sam's. Miraculously, he was able to plug it and I was on my way with my same tire. There was never a problem.

When u have a 40+ thousand auto...I believe u go to dealership and get the Toyota/Honda parts made for the vehicle. Better quality part that lasts longer and fits perfectly AND they know their vehicles/maintenance. Plus if independent goes and buys part from Toyota it's very expensive as opposed to getting paet and repair at deqlership. I drive 2003 Honda Accord that has been well maintained with just regular maintinence and 240,000+ miles....keeping it till it falls apart!

A synthetic Oil change and filter cost me at the most $35 bucks.. And gear oil for that is 10 bucks.. 1 Quart will do the transfer case and the rear... Anyway good vid and I get it about the time thing.. Like I pay people to wash my car because it's not something I want to waste my time on.. But everything else I do myself for the most part.. I don't trust mechanic's to do what you ask and how you want it done.. That's why we see vid's of people complaining that their CVT went after 60K. That's because they need to have the CVT oil changed almost as much as the motor for them to last. Most CVT's only hold 8.5 Quarts and that burns up very fast especially in hot places and a heavy foot doesn't help either...

Independents are expensive because they are good. I just got finished getting a indi to re-build a Bobcat that the dealers wouldn't touch. Today, I took a starting motor to a dealer mechanic who said it went against policy to take a part that wasn't attached to the machine......got out of there and left it with a indi who said he'd have it ready tomorrow. (And tomorrow is Saturday.) I'm frankly sick of dealer mechanics.

Overhead, and over regulation. In California you need permits on the wall to do any oil changes. Also to weld, also to have tires around new or used. Try to dispose of oil and call to get it pumped out, you will be asked for an EPA number or they wont come. Also ditto for tires. It cost ten bucks a truck tire to have them picked up. It is little wonder why you see junk tires along the roads.The county EPA guys will show up to make sure you are complying. The quote from independent shop means that the guy you called has plenty of work.

I have a 2005 Toyota Tundra, and for pretty much all it's life I've gone to the same place to get my oil and filter changed. My place is called PROMPTO Oil change and service. Kinda like what a Jiffy Lube place is like. Never ever have I ever had to pay that much for an oil change. It's like 30.00 today, but has varied in the 20-30 range for like forever. Never will I go to Toyota for service. Find a trusted mechanic, and stick with them through your cars life. I've seen a few horror stories where people in dealerships have changed oil and accidently not put filters on tight enough, or peoples oil leaking right after having oil change service doneat a dealer.

Have a 21 rav 4 they throw in that free Toyo service, TWICE 2 separate dealers they gave me paper work that the tire rotation was done, NOPE!! Liars! on paper work! How I know, 1500 miles into my ownership got a flat, the one tire has a different tire air stem!!! Same tire on the left front of car, gotcha!! I will only go back to dealer if its a major repair w potential warranty involved.

You're not going to save going elsewhere for manufacturer recommended maintenance. The dealer for that manufacturer is equipped to do these services specifically for that manufacturer. Independent shops need to prepare for all makes and models. Which costs them more and therefore they charge you more. However, you might be able to save at an independent shop if they only work on certain brands, like, say, only Japanese brands or only German brands.
