Toyota FJ Cruiser tries to climb hill and breaks something important

La Grange off road in Ca. This FJ tries to sees that noboby can make it up this muddy hill so he decides to give it a try. On his final attempt, he backs up as far as he can and drops the pedal....resulting in damage you have to see to believe.

The early F J’s had a rear differential susceptible to failure. It went to an 8.2 in 2010. That year through 2014 model in US had very few problems. I just bought a ‘12 w/168,500 miles on it. I love it already.

The differential broke because the front tires left the ground and when they touched down they meet resistance and a shock went threw the drive train. If he had let off the gas when the tires had left the ground it would have been fine, although that's easier said then done. Skid plates or lack there of had nothing to do with it.

Landcruiser Toy What are you talking about. Landcruisers are always breaking down. The 80 series tear through shafts with moderate offroading with their full time AWD, they blow 5th gear when towing light loads, stock motors can't take boost. Even the 200 series are snapping auto transmission on corrugated roads.. Nissan Patrols are tough, Toyota Landcruisers are for highway driving and grocery shopping..

Jorn Navarre Toyota engines are excellent (perhaps Yamaha should receive the praise for playing a huge part in Toyota engine design) but their gearboxes are weak, their CV shafts - weak and differentials are weak, chassis are weaker and tear in unusual places no other manufacturer has seen and the Hilux IFS has been torn right off quite a few times.. Nissan all the way to the beginning of 2000 made more bulletproof over engineered vehicles. They're the real unrecognized achievers.. Nissan has it all over Toyota in performance and 4x4 ruggedness. Toyota is fuel efficient and confortable.. Consumer reports you posted are isolated to demographics and not many people do the surveys. The US never received any "real" Nissan that Australia and New Zealand recieved..

Toyota put the Torsen T-3 center diff in these rigs which means they didn't engineer them, they bought them and it broke because he landed right on it. Over engineered by Torsen or not, it's not going to take 4000lbs coming down on it.

the 80 is strong, after 200.000km you need to change the front homokineets. at 200.000km youre nissan engine is broke.... And yamaha had nothing to do with making toyota diesel engines, its Hino.

He broke a front drive shaft axle. That's why the gear oil is leaking. Also bent the heck out of those ridiculous faux rock rails. The FJ is a very capable vehicle but is not made for this application. It would take thousands of dollars worth of modifications to configure an FJ for this type of thing. BTW notice the thousands of dollars worth of mods on the jeeps in this vid. Jeep wasn't designed for this type of thing either right out of the box.

Hi i'm a H3 owner and after watching this vid i'm glad that you showed everyone that you don't mess around 5* to you but you're comment surprised me that the dealer did not let the warranty cover that damage it gets expensive like that .. i push my H3 to the limit and beyond and i broken a lot of stuff like 3x front diff - 4x transfer case - 2x rear diff and just gut new transmission all by 60k miles and i did not spent a red cent for any repairs. SOO WOW i feel you're pain!!

FJ's have their place but Yesterday we recovered an FJ Cruiser that went over the edge of a 60 foot cliff into a riverbed. It would have been impossible to recover without our Jeeps. the width of the trail plus the weight and location of the lost rig would have made it damn near impossible to do the job with any other vehicle. long live Jeep. 93' YJ wrangler 4 inch lift + 33'' tires, stock 4.0L.

because it isn't specially built for strict offroading like the other, yet it got much farther. The only reason it was leaking transmission fluid was because the FJ didn't land on it's wheels, it landed on the undercarrige.

+North Odell FJ's were built as Toyotas offroad SUV to try and compete with the Wrangler. It was built for offroad, it was just a fail for offroad. Reason being it only lasted 7 years before being discontinued. The ONLY reason and I mean literally the ONLY reason he made it further is because he got a running start. The FJ was made for the Middle East originally, they needed something that could suffer greatly over long periods of time and keep going...Toyota just brought it back along with everyone else doing retro models, the fact of the matter is that you get more bang for your buck in the FJ Cruisers, they're made to handle some fun terrain right off the lot and with a few aftermarket parts it's capabilities sky rocket...I really don't get why anyone cries about this comparison deal

The cracked transfer case was not a mechanical failure, just the driver failing to protect the underside with a steel skid plate. Not the fault of an FJ Cruiser engineering.. The buggies have steel tubing for protection. Also, an FJ or 4th gen 4runner costs ~$10,000. Those dune buggies cost over $35,000 lol and they are not road legal, nor fun to sit inside ( mosquitoes, mud, no A/C, no heater, etc) and are a different class of vehicle. The transmission coolers on those buggies are like 50x the size of any Jeep/Toyota truck. The fact that a street car can do as much as a dune buggy is pretty cool. You just have to protect it with steel bumpers/skid plates/roll cage if you want to do the same dune buggy activities. Obviously.

a good percentage of rock crawling rigs have 7000+ stall torgue converters to aide in keeping the axles and transmissions in one piece...in other words 7000 rpms from a crawlers motor is about 2000 with a regulars trans

The Japanese military authorities ordered Toyota to produce a similar vehicle but to alter the appearance. The FJ may have out climbed the rock-crawlers, but they were still running at the end of the day. A lift may get you over some stuff, but you still need proper armor - that bent up OEM step rail is a clue. The first mod for my XTerra was rock sliders, next is a full set of skids, then comes suspension to handle the added weight of the armored bumpers that are to follow. No amount of lift would have prevented the bottoming at the crest of that hill.

I'd just like to add this now, yes, the FJ made is farther up the hill than the rock crawlers. But i would also like to add that note the amount of speed the FJ had going up, so much that he nearly ramped it. The rock CRAWLERS just slowly crawled up it, which, in low traction situations like this just doesn't work, you need the momentum.

@FrogJeep420 I dont have a cherokee, I have a wrangler. A TJ. And jumps are sweet but I didn't buy it to pre-run, I bought it to crawl, climb and explore the wilderness. It's no surprise jeeps don't want to follow you on jumps though. Your indy suspension handles that much better than solid axles. But if I want to go off a jump, I'll go with my buddy in his truck with a long travel kit, dual rate king coilovers, 37's and a supercharger. Wranglers and cherokees are not designed for jumping.

It didn't break going up hill, it broke coming down on its front end with the force of almost the entire vehicle. Plus, the front tires were still spinning. That's a recipe for breaking something in any stock drivetrain.

Partly true-the 41 design was all willys the body was even stamped WILLYS. Ford was brought in because willys couldn't handle the amount of jeeps needed to be built. Ford did compete against willys with their own design but the military decided on willys design instead.

Also not that it has any bearing of importance, but the white crawler is a Suzuki, the other appears to be a Jeep TJ buggy. Would like to see what it can/would do as it makes a lot more power/torque. The Samurai was bogged way down, being underpowered sucks.

Surprised none made it up. looked like the first guy was in too low of a gear and therefore couldn't carry enough momentum. Thats transfer case fluid leaking out of the FJ. Despite the skid plate. From mountain biking and off-road driving you find out that momentum is the key. The FJ driver had the right idea and the most balls but he paid a price. FJs are nice but I'll stick to my Jeep TJ. Both excellent off road is properly set up.

I had an 01 Cherokee with 4.5inch short arm left. I have done things like this many times and never had anything break, although my steering would un-align often due to my crappy tie rods. I don't think this should have broken that easily.

It's dirt not a rock. Momentum vs. Weight. And yes the IFS does blowout often. Common site on rock trails. Do the solid axle conversion for anything more extreme than this anthill.

@FrogJeep420 Yes, he drives a heavily modified tacoma. But we're not talking about "toyota vs. jeep" here... we're discussing an FJ vs. Wrangler. There is a difference. If anything, the FJ is decent at all things. It will be out crawled by a jeep with solid axles, it will be out-jumped and out-run by a truck, and it isn't as smooth as a cadillac or mercedes. So if you like the mediocrity factor... cool. But telling me that your FJ is a "pre-runner" and a "rock crawler" is not true.

@nationalcitysycho FJ is the fuel code. It used to be the Toyota Jeep BJ when the US government wanted it to replace Willy's Jeep during the Korean war, BJ is the fuel code for diesel. If you were to look at an FJ40 it looks almost identical to an old Jeep, because once again, it replaced Jeep in the Korean war...Jeeps are such cliche 4x4 anyways, there great rides though...I just find it funny that every FJ vid on KZbin will have a ton of FJ bashing, as if Jeepers feel threatened by the comp.

Respect for anyone who does this or even tries it, but attempting this with a truck or SUV bought straight off the show room floor is a bad idea. They are designed for minor off road obstacles. This is pushing it for one with no major suspension modifications or safety equipment. Like I said upmost RESPECT for anyone doing that that one though. The expense in the end may be more costly than expected, but bragging rights sometime are worth more.

you forgot the whole COG + wheelbase thing. Shorter wheel base vehicles will have more trouble uphill than one with a longer wheel base thanks to Newton and his god damned physics. But that's exactly my point, tires make a huge difference, in addition to COG, so the FJ definitely has an advantage, however put them both in Carnage Canyon in CO or any other rough trail like it, and the crawlers will leave the FJ like nothing.

FJ's are by no means bad wheelers but... can't really compare something climbing a steep hill when it has a lower COG (less lift) and a longer wheelbase. Also tires make a big difference in something like this. Any genius can hammer the throttle up a hill, doesn't really show the offroad capability of the vehicle, hell they do it on "David's Farm" in cars....

And some stock guys might be scared to follow you on the trail, yeah. Fact remains, though, that with 35" tires and 6" of lift, etc... I can follow a full body rig like an xterra, FJ, land rover... pretty much anywhere. Just because after the size of an obstacle gets to a certain point, your stock angles (approach, departure, etc.) start to really hurt you.

The FJ could have made that climb if it had mud tyres on. I've seen Jeep grands do the same type of climb but only with mud tyres at such an angle. I am surprised by the damage to the FJ, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't it have a bash plate? Toyota drivers do have a bee up their ass about their 4x4s, you often see them talk crap about Jeeps, Nissans, Range Rovers, Land Rovers in fact anything that isn't a Toyota.

crazyt1ger08 Judging from the video, it looks like there was enough clearance when the front end landed. It didn't seem like he hit anything, plus there was no dirt or impact mark on the transfer case. What I'm thinking, is that since he had the accelerator pinned when they tires came in contact with the ground they jarred to a halt. That may have broken something in the transfer case which punched a hole in the case.

+crazyt1ger08 The bash plate is mounted to the transfercase. As you can see in the video, the truck landed onto the bash plate and punctured the transfercase.
