Scientists have discovered a new relationship: the more ARB accessories the less likely it will be taken off road. There is also a strong correlation with shorts, white joggers and no socks

Excellent review, and I did buy one. A 2014 model, and it was immaculate! When I started my search for an offroader, the only criteria was for bullet-proof reliability and old-school simplicity, and Toyota blitzed it from that point onwards. The FJ ticked all the boxes, but I also had a really good look at the LC 70 series, my second choice. Then the search was on for 12+ months before I found the right vehicle. I think it's too early to call the FJ an icon as we would the FJ40, but it has definitely achieved "rock star" status with its cult following! Let the haters hate as they watch their hater shitboxes get towed away on the back of a truck. The FJ is way too capable and cool to give a damn about wannabe tossers! Love it!

I've fortunately owned four (2 Black & 2 White) bought from pretty much the first shipment to Australia and from the last shipment delivered late August/September 2016. Love them, despite all the naysayers who critique everything from its appearance to performance, the FJ has never let me down. Bush, beach, camping, hunting. Unfortunately, I've also suffered everything from the cracked windscreens and recently been told the time chain is now leaking with only 90,000kms 😧. Otherwise the best and most iconic vehicle I've ever owned. Second to none, value for money, and I've owned heaps of vehicles over the past 30+ years.

I'm a owner of a fj that looks a lot like that one. Bought it new in 2010 and it only has 70 thousand miles. When watching your opinion on the fj I noticed a few things that are kinda misleading. 1 you mention that it's slow but don't let people know that part of that reason is the ARB front bash bumper add that and a winch you have atleast 125 pounds to the front of the fj. Then add large heavy mud terrains to it that has to be close to a extra10 pounds per tire. That really does effect speed and gas mileage. As far as rear hinges breaking? Only ones I have ever seen cracked are from people adding huge tires to the door and then put gas cans and other items. Now cracks between the side doors?? I have a lot of friends with fj's some do a lot of wheeling and some don't. None of them have ever mentioned that proble. Also your mechanic mentioned head gasket issues?? Many here have abused the 07's and the fj's will have 250,000 miles with not one having issues of head gaskets it must be a aussie issue. Here in the US we had head gaskets issues with the 3.3 in the Tacoma's by the way I live near Tacoma just south east of there. I will agree about blind spots but if you learn to depend on your side mirrors and add a small spot mirror on them it is much better. The windscreen can be a issue I will agree with that. The windscreen is also not cheap here to replace at almost 700.00 to 800. US dollars. Like any 4wheel rig always stay ontop of maintenance and you won't have any issues. Ignore them and you might find your self stuck way out in the middle of no where. My best advice is to find one that is close to stock no big tires I went with only a 32in diameter and it gets me everywhere I need to go. Try and find one with a back up camera. Mine has one from stock. If you do small little tweaks to the fj you will get better gas mileage and a great weekend 4x4. Oh almost forgot when you were driving you mentioned loud humming from the alterain tires? Those were mud terrain bfg's I have the bfg at2's and very little to no noise. Ok done with my rant. I truly hope you did buy that fj it did look really nice. Put it on a rack and have the wheel bearings checked. When large tires and a negative offset rim it can ruin front wheel bearings quicker and those are a pain to replace. I helped a friend with his. Dealer wanted 1200 to replace just the front ones.

G'day D A, thanks for watching and for the comment. You're 100% right on everything you said. I did mention that the driving impressions I was giving needed to have the modifications taken into account but yes, I'm wishing I'd mentioned all the extra weight when it comes to performance. As for the hinges, there have been a few cases of early FJs here in Australia of hinges not breaking but losing alignment. This was on standard models too. The B pillar cracking issue is incredibly rare but we felt it needed to be mentioned as it's such an easy check to do on what is potentially a huge problem, but again, an incredibly rare one. As Jim (mechanic) said, these engines and transmissions are immensely reliable but we have to mention any problems that he encounters. We did shoot a few of the things you've mentioned but the edit was getting incredibly long so some comments just didn't make the final cut. We felt we covered the important stuff while hopefully still making an entertaining video. It can be a tough balance to find. Again, thanks for watching and commenting, we really appreciate it.

@@mrnbrbn2391 I personally would not try and use it with baby seats let alone another person in the back. For me it's my wife and I plus I fold the seat down for our two dogs. The back seat is very small and not the easiest to get to. If it were me I would be looking at 4runners they are great rigs with plenty of room. I think you can get a 3rd row of seating also. They share a lot of parts interchangeable with the fj cruiser and are a very popular 4x4 That's what I would do.

Since 2000 there hasn't been a better vehicle developed than the Toyota FJ Cruiser. The only qualifying fact that requires mentioning is for the price. For the price that FJ Cruisers were offered at from 2007-14 there wasnt a better built vehicle. And of course those that know FJ know the last one was actually made this year 2023 outside the U.S. as part of the Final 1000 December 2022 models. The car was distributed for 17 years worldwide. Anyway. I'm at 250,000 miles on one with very little maintenance and im ready to buy another. What most people that have never owned one don't understand is that while it's quality was incredible for the price point the build was incredibly well though out and easy to fix. I've never met a soul that had an FJ problem that didn't have a straightforward fix, but I've met countless souls with Jeep issues. The FJ was just that well thought out. Or, or maybe it wasn't. Maybe they got incredibly lucky. Doesn't matter. Buying a used FJ is a no brainer. I'd spend 1/3rd the time inspecting a used FJ than I would any other vehicle. They're just that good. That easy. Love em.

I have a 2012, had it since it was 2 years old, so a little over 10 years now. Love it, zero issues, perfect in every way (except maybe gas mileage, but that's expected with a vehicle like this. I get about 14 / 19). I only really drive it when I need the space, or in bad weather / winter. I actually purchased an older 2008 Civic just to use as a daily driver, to keep my FJ miles down (FJ only has 86k miles on it at 12 years old). The Civic is pretty amazing too! Got it 6 years ago, and not a single issue with 167k miles.

Great review lads! We own 2 - one for mum and one for dad! Off-road they are one of the most impressive fourby going and will climb mountains and sand dunes like caterpillars if they have to! BUT you forgot these beauties to look out for (especially for families): 1) Suicide doors are so good as a novelty and for child safety (they can never open a door or window at highway speed!) HOWEVER at the supermarket and shopping centre carpark are impossible, especially if you are carrying babies, carrying groceries, carrying a beer-gut and/or pregnant 😂 2) Long range tank is a must if you are thinking of doing any decent travel distances 3) Windscreens for these are expensive and complicated to replace, so make sure there aren’t any chips or stone damage when you purchase and if you get some on the road, get them fixed ASAP before a new screen is required. 4) There is a factory reversing camera located in the rear vision mirror. But you need spectacles inside of spectacles to see it 😂 5) They are an absolute safety cage for babies/toddlers and car seats in the back. But forget about teenage kids or adults getting in the back for anything more than a 10 minute drive. There’s simply no room to breathe - so instead of selling your car at this point, make them walk, or buy two! Or three! 😂 And lastly, you forgot to mention the rear window flip-up feature which is amazing for the dogs at the beach!

I ordered my U.S. lefthand drive 2007 FJ in December 2006, with exact specs in mind (Sun Fusion yellow, rare 6-speed manual with full-time FWD, etc. It finally arrived in March 2007 and currently has 120K miles on it. Since then, it's received custom seat covers, Bilstein shocks, a 2.5 lift, upgraded tires, rear storage system, steel front bumper with a winch. It's been extremely fun and reliable during constant freeway commutes, as well as many off-roading adventures in California deserts and Colorado mountains. It's strong and heavy, so MPG is not too good -- but I knew that going in. Keeping it forever!

Just wanted to mention this. The head gasket issue the mechanic referred to was on 03-05 4Runners and possibly Tacomas. Unless there's something different with Australian models, that problem was corrected with an upgraded head gasket starting with the 06 model year. And truthfully, I'm not sure you could even call it a problem. My 05 4Runner went 300K miles before the head gasket failed. That's better than 90% of vehicles by other makes.

I have a 2010 FJ 4X4 US MODEL. The best auto I've ever owned. I purchased used from owner and at 92k miles. The FJ was never used off road, and drives like it was brand new. Of course, the gas millige is not good at 17mpg, but the benefits of its function outweigh the mpg. Also, I know if I ever sale it, I will not lose a dime. In fact, I believe I will turn a profit. As they become less available from drivers who are irresponsible, and total the vehicle from their terrible driving, my investment will grow. I now see less with each passing week, and the less I see, my smile is wide. I don't think I will ever sale, but the right price, could give me considering thought. I now look to buy others, and have a fleet in storage for my retirement. My father retired with a fleet of 57 Chevrolet. The right automotive at a good price, can be better than gold.

I've had my 2010 FJ for about 3 years now and I never want to be without it, absolutely love it! I've changed the suspension and up sized the tires and it still handles the highway with no issues at 35mph or 80mph it cruises smooth. Its not a sports car but its not a slug either though I'm not sure what the 0-60 time is but when the throttle gets to 100% its moving. On 500 plus mile trips with cruise set at 70mph it averages 18.5 mpg and just recently went through an ice/snow even with it and in 4wd while not using 5th gear around town it got about 13mpg. Its a tank but I love it. Very nice watch BTW

Just read your review on redriven and it also mentions the head gasket issue. I'd suggest you research this and you will find that the 1grfe engines built after 2006 do not have a specific problem with head gasket failures. Mentioning that in your review may cause some people to shy away from buying an FJ when it's really not true. Also, there are many examples here in the states of that engine lasting for 500-600K miles. It's an excellent engine.

I am looking to buy one as I am in the states and diesel is $6 a gallon whereas unleaded regular is $3.50. I get 18 mpg in my Dodge 1 ton. So it would be basically the same just $2 a gallon cheaper. Nice job!

My coworker has 3...his, his wife's and daughter. I was driving a jeep wrangler sport...He said he would let me know if he found an FJ...as I was admiring his...His is decked out. Well he found one and to my surprise I bought it. What a difference! I think I'm done buying vehicles. This FJ is a smooth ride! Toyota put the cruise in Cruiser for sure! It's green with a white top. The green machine!! ;-)

I do like the FJ Cruiser, It is cool looking and very capable. I still prefer the 4Runner (US model) 4.0 Gas V6, Prado everywhere else, as it has the same drivetrain, is better driving and has more room. Mine now has a 3" OME lift, 285/70/17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT's. With a Redarc DC/DC controller, dual batteries, a fridge and a bunch of other gear, is great for traveling and camping off-road.

Been saving for one, but in Australia prices have almost doubled. Would look nice next to my 93 Range Rover LSE. I like the earlier blue colour that was discontinued. Toyota offered a super charger from the dealer to get a few more horses something like 0 to 100 in 5.5 seconds to keep up with traffic.
@ReDriven
@ReDriven 3 жыл бұрын
The prices are crazy mate. There are a few sweet aftermarket supercharger kits too that I have looked into....for when I can buy one.....once this channel blows up and we're making lots of KZbin $$$$. Thanks for watching and commenting too mate.

Liked the review - had mine a couple if years 2016 model - Toyota asked at last service if I wanted a free assessment for trade in - who would ever trade one of these in - the way the prices are going on these it will be worth double what i paid for it - but again what good is that if you are never going to sell. Love the FJ.

Love mine. Pulls my camper. Fits in my condo parking garage parking space due to short wheel base. Concurs unplowed streets of St Paul MN. Only thing I'll say against it is wandering. My old Buick sedan would go straight all day with no hands on the wheel. Tall, pushing alot of wind, short wheel base. Got to actively steer this car.

Ive wanted one of these for years and was recently in need of a new vehicle. It was a choice between a 2012 Trail Teams edition in Radiant Red with 200k miles on it, and a 2022 Bronco 2-door Badlands Sasquatch with less than 9,000 miles on it. I went with the Bronco. But i feel like i will always wonder what life would have been like with the FJ. I love the Bronco, don't get me wrong. But there's just too many computerized bells and whistles. Its like driving an off-road laptop. I shouldn't have to reprogram the freaking BIOS of my truck just to install a new pair of taillights!

The BF Goodrich KO2 tyres are completely silent and more than enough for off-road . The muddies are ver noisy. Plus they DO have a reversing camera which works very well even at night . Maybe the earlier models didn't ?? I've owned one since 2014 with 190 clicks The thing is an indestructible tank . Nothing has gone wrong. only thing replaced is the gas strut on the rear cargo door.

Having had the misfortune of sitting in the back of an FJ cruiser, it is about as pleasant as being subject to an MRI scan. Horribly claustrophobic and you wouldn't want to be back there in an accident. You'd never get out. Plus there is less room in the cabin than in my VW Golf and it's cramped in the front for 6 footers, let alone the rear. But huge respect for their off road ability.

@@ReDriven Can't see it hitting $100k while Toyota are still producing them. UAE and South Africa are still receiving new stock. I think Philippines might be still selling new FJs as well. Once production stops fully then $100k might be a possibility.

I brought 1 of the last model FJ CRUSIERS.2016 and took it through the outback and around most of Australia except Tassie sorry. went great, we even slept in the back. See there are bonuses to being short. And the other major thing that surprised me was how warm it is inside when you're parked at a campsite for the night. With only a blanket. 10out of 10.P.S, I do agree about the windscreen though, I got a few chips when traveling along the outback way. Other than that all good.

Loved the review man. Also, here in Washington state, 10 year old FJ’s are still expensive as hell with over 150,000 miles on them. They’re very reliable, but low mile ones here cost as much as a new 4Runner!
