For those who want a big SUV with built-in off-road ability, you’ve got two choices: go big, with something like a LandCruiser or Patrol. Or, go not-so-big (and not-so-spendy) with the variety of ute-based 4X4 wagons currently on offer.
If you want to fit seven aboard (or five and lots of gear) and have the confidence to travel off-road, two recently updated and facelifted options that can mix business with pleasure are the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner.

I have my pajero sport exceed since November last year (2019), A suspension upgrade, somthing like outback armour, transforms the Pajero sport on and off road ride and handling. Off the mark at lights the pajero is slow, (this is due to turbo lag and a really really low first and second gear, this make it a weapon off road, awesome for crawling) but once moving it goes really well.. the short combings can be sorted with a reputable diesel tune, gains of 30-40% safe reliable power is seen.😉 I almost bought a fortuna (i am a Toyota man) but the DPF issues with the 2.8 scared me a long with the lack of tech, no android auto no adaptive cruise or active safety features. After a few aftermarket upgrades, Bull Bar and snorkel, (the factory ones are crap, suspension. I am really happy with my purchase! Oh on towing, even though they are rated to 3ton you wouldn't tow that much you loose too much payload, they are both really suited to 1.5 - 2ton, which is most small to medium caravans/camper trailers.

Cheers for the feedback mate. Good to hear from an actual owner. I'm currently torn between the two as well and the fortuner is a turn off because of most of the reasons you mentioned. Quick one though which model did you go for? Did you see a reason to get the exceed. As I like my tech but the websites haven't been too specific. Cheers

@@XDKX101 yeah the heated seats did it for me, I have a bad back.. and the premium speakers, Blind spot monitoring, FCM and radar cruise control. I like the tec stuff, and I think the exceed looks just that bit better with the rear spoiler 🙂 However I believe the GLS now with FCM and radar cruise.. the rest is only available on the exceed, the 2020 now also has lane change assist in the exceed

I almost bought a fortuner back then, but the way the 3rd row folds and the price (atleast in my country) was a deal breaker. I went with pajero sport instead, though i'd be happy with both. Offers charging in the rear, offers apple/android connectivity, and the additional safety of being able to be a permanent 4wd in the wet, with at least reportedly minimal difference in on-road difference. The other has floor mats I can buy at Supercheap Auto in 5 minutes. Only advantageous feature is the sliding rear seat, and you are suggesting they are line-ball!!!

No comment has been made on how either car feels in the motorway. If you driving long distance, you will spend tens of hours at motorway cruise speed. People asking about towing, and seems nobody in Oz does proper towing review for all these popular 7 seaters. And You are so Toyota biased. Seats are crap info console crap, layout with cupholders, manual hand break, barely any USB, 3rd row seats dangerous, Torque? Air vents at the back seats, blowing cold air onto your head, which gives you headache eventually. Pajero sport needs engine tuning especially when moving from stop position, any dealer will confirm that. Bit narrow, no lumbar support on front seats.lots not mentioned on both cars. Honestly? your reviews are very basic and biased. I would never buy a car accordingly to your little chat review.

I will choose the Pajero sport over Fortuner. I think Toyota is just overrated in Australia they give less for your money .also they not reliable anymore like they use to

The styling of these two models is hideously ugly. Who wouldn't prefer a RAV4 or Prado? The Pajero.......I just can't look at it!

Pajero’s exterior looks odd and interior looks clunky n rather small plus all it’s cheap silver plastic wiil go dull and dirty overtime. Whilst fortuner more refined all a round totally new suv design exterior and interior and new chassis aswell.

Toyota’s reputation and reliability can’t be beaten, in addition with Mitsubishi’s recent sketchy reputation as a company and economic problems.

Are you for real , DPF failures on going , airbox issues on going , propshaft issues ongoing , butter soft rear springs . The Mitsubishi leaves this thing for dead .

Dude are you serious? The engine and transmission in the triton and Pajero sport has been much more reliable than Toyota's since it's releasing. Toyota's engine has a lot of problems but at least the transmission is good as it's the same one running in the dmax. You Toyota fanboys need to get over this thought that Toyota is the most reliable vehicle company ever!

Bwahahah blinded toyota minions! I've seen a lot of old pajeros, lancers, l200s, l300s, and delicas runnings on the streets compared to toyota. I guess corolla and some few hilux only.
