You're looking at the biggest steering wheel paddle shifters we have seen in 2020! And they are fitted to the new 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero (or Montero) Sport seven-seat SUV! Sure, it's not sporty, but the paddle shifters are pretty cool nevertheless. But, is the new Mitsubishi 7 seat SUV any good? Paul Maric gets behind the wheel to find out!

As a previous owner of the Mitsubishi ute I traded that in for a 2019 5 seat Pajero Sport. I have had a lot of vehicles in my life, but the sport is one a few of the cars that I really enjoy driving each day. It is relatively light on fuel, around 8-8.5l/100, tows well and has a great gearbox. I would not mind having 8" though, size does matter. ( I am referring to the infotainment center)

I would like to thank you for your well thought out reviews, I have been looking for a new car for my growing family (I got stuck with a nissan kicks because I didn't do good research), and I like the fact that all your videos, I can expect the same things, such as the bags test, the water bottle test, how easy to get to the rear seats etc, all the real life situations, unlike other useless reviews. So thank you Paul, the search still continues though 🤚

We bought a MY19 Pajero Sport Black Edition earlier this year. After investigating the competition, it was an easy choice. Everest. It's a Ford, and I would not feel confident with its long term reliability. Too many gearbox failures reported for my liking (are the gearboxes made of plastic???). Fortuner. Overpriced, ugly interior, 3rd row seats that when folded up, look like they were an after-thought. DPF class action still ongoing. No thanks.... Trailblazer. Holden is going down the tube, so long term support for any holden vehicle is questionable. The Isuzu MU-X is the only other car we went and looked at. Very solid and reliable by all reports. However after sitting in the interior of one for 30 seconds.... 🤢🤮 Hopefully this will be sorted with the DMax and MU-X model update that is on its way. No rear diff lock, on any model in the Isuzu range either, not even as an option. Bought the Pajero Sport and we are extremely happy with it. As mentioned in your review, being able to use 4H on the bitumen or on hard packed gravel is brilliant. Longer warranty than the rest of the competition for peace of mind too, at 7 years. Super comfortable, feature packed and good on fuel. Averaging just under 9L per 100km. It's a lot of car for the money 👍

Great reviews Paul, you are the Matt Watson of Oz. Love your detailed and no non-sense reviews. If you can add couple of things, that will be great. In any 7 seater, can you please get a person around 165- 175 cm height to talk about the third row space (you are too tall to be packed into third row 😆😆). With any SUV with all wheel drive, can you also include gravel road and fire trail driving, so we can also see how they fare off the beaten track with some inclines and moguls. Also keep a medium or small sized suitcase to demonstrate the boot space behind the third row. Pajero Sport- Only thing i don't like about pajero sport is that all the top tethers are in the roof, which is not a problem in a 5 seater, but in 7 seater it makes very hard to get in or out as well as to use the third row. Not a neat packaging. And if this SUV was a few cms wider, that will make it perfect to sit 3 in the middle row. Other than that, this is a great SUV with a perfect AWD system.

I liked this one too, although I reviewed the Exceed model. On normal roads I thought the steering was a bit vague and the ride just a bit bouncy to be a daily driver. Off-road it just flew up steep dirt tracks. It's a shame the all-digital dash display is not standard across the range.

Love your review as usual, Paul! I love how you don't just skim the infotainment section in your reviews. This is prolly left-field comment, but I love the fact that they have the HDMI port on this car. I'm a fan of HDMI because I can hook up my Raspberry Pi and have full control as to what displays on the screen, just like having a computer up (web browsing, video, GPS mirroring, and even screen splitting to achieve both at the same time). These customisability I can't get no matter how good Android Auto is. I have a Honda and with a Honda there's even that 3-button trick that can turn of the "safety" (can't view HDMI while driving). I wish Mitsubishi will have the same easy hack in their system.

Great review as always, we are looking at one of these either in GLS plus Deluxe pack or just jump to the Exceed [as you suggest]. One thing i may suggest for reviews is a quick 30 secs more on a deeper dive into safety specs. Some of these ute bases 4wds are light on safety vs "SUVs' ie full length curtain bags missing to cover 3rd row etc - important if your thinking kids in that row, and/or as we discovered better safety tech only on the top spec model in Pajero Sport. In our test drive we found the steering less direct, engine not overly peppy of the mark, requiring 2nd thoughts before leaping onto a roundabout, and yes a bit noisy out of the front end when you step on it. Shame the Rexton is troubled with Ssangyong ownership in doubt as the Ultimate spec interior and 20/21 upgrade seem excellent, but who's going to support the 7 yr warranty etc [in AU] if the parent company doesn't find a suitable partner, well priced too. We'll probably get "Sport" instead, hard to go wrong with 5 + 5 yr warranty. Appreciate the review, thanks again.

4000km down the track and some additional comments. @100 on the clock (95 in reality) we got 7.2lt per 100km on a trip from Melbourne to Adelaide, and that included city driving at either end. At 105kmh (100 in reality) that dropped to 7.8lt per 100km for the same trip which is still very good for a car of this size and weight, and should improve further as the engine frees up. Other things I like - the electric rear hatch door, the intelligent cruise control which I use a lot of the time, the huge space for carrying stuff and the comfortable if a little soft suspension. So far no gripes at all. One of the nifty things that I have not seen mentioned in the reviews is the way the rear wiper activates if it is raining and you need to reverse, and the fact that you can activate the rear hatch door by swinging your foot under the rear bumper.

I'm choosing between Fortuner and Pajero Sport, but getting more confused after reading the comments. I know both off-road is good, but what about the ride quality and interior built quality? Did the Mits bad on interior built quality? Just want an SUV that provides a comfortable ride in the city (and maybe on the gravel too) but also provides good quality 4x4 system. I was looking for a Prado in the past few months, and I rent it for a few days for some driving, it's good but it's a long list to wait in Australia. I turn to my Plan B with Fortuner and Pajero Sport but have no chance to drive them, not sure how they feel. Of perhaps there is some other options for me to look at?

We bought the exceed and love it, so many gadgets its a bit hard to take it all in first drive but getting used to it all now. It was smaller than what we thought it would be coming from a commodore wagon but definitely livable and the utility of the vehicle is hard to beat. I generally love the styling of it but yes I agree with you those rear tail lights...what drugs were the Mitsubishi stylist on that day? If they cut the big tail down of the rear lights out completely it would be a really nice looking SUV.

Tail lights look like as it is designed by an amateur designer. It is unnecessarily too big, function should define the form. It does not contribute to the overall design concept, it reduces the quality of the design. The front of the car is too complicated. So many bits & pieces without any function are added. If I buy that car, I would cover lower front of the car with a bull bar to cover all that ugliness. Compared with the original Pajero, Mitsubishi lowered the quality of the design.

Have you considered including the comfort of the middle seat in vehicles? Although it’s not regularly sat in it may be interesting for some to know.

Good day, I had mine remapped, reflashed Don not know though if I did the right thing long term wise. I also had jaos suspension installed. It now has 220whp and 520nm torque. And very reliable suspension. The rest I have no complaints whatsoever. It is a very very amazing car to drive

After seeing this review, we in Indonesia is really lucky to get a sunroof on pajero sport, but there are some bit that we still dont have, like that seatbelt indicator, leather padding on front doorpanel, and an integrated head unit (its only available on Dakar 4x4 Ultimate model) anyway i love the way you review the car, simple and just neat. Greetings from Indonesia🇮🇩

Thanks for an excellent, thorough review! By the way, thanks for the spec conversions, as well. It looks like, over the years, Mitsubishi has taken the space out of this car. The Pajeros that I grew up with seemed a lot more spacious. I was surprised to see how far up your knees were in the first and second rows.

Thanks, Bill! The Pajero is a slightly different car to the Pajero Sport. The Pajero Sport shares a platform with the Triton, whereas the Pajero uses a monocoque chassis.

That's because it is not a Pajero. It's the new mitsubishi challenger, which is just a Triton wagon, but the marketing department renamed or Pajero sport

It's my favourite. I'm wanting to buy one but waiting on job stability first with all the covid-19 going on.close 2nd is the Ford Everest and wondering if it's worth waiting to see what the Toyota Fortuner is going to bring to the table. But I think I will be very happy with the Pajero Sport exceed model as my very first 4WD.
@CarExpertAus

The new Fortuner would want to be significantly better than the current one to merit a run over the Everest or Pajero Sport. The Everest is definitely worth testing - we will have a review on the channel in the coming weeks.

I can't imagine the persom at middle second row seat nightmare for fixing the seats belts. What about the rear seat folding set up, MuX and Everest are better way in folding seats and interior space. And for a long drive I reckoned your left knee will be anoyed at the center console. Aside from that quick observation, this SuV is good enough for a Family.. Nice Video Paul..

Nice review but it's Good that the suspension is tuned for comfort, and also no one ever touches a dashboard, so it does not have to be soft. This soft touch dashboard complaint utterly rediculous. This Pajero looks Amazing.

My point exactly about interior materials. We have a society obsessed with bullshit marketing of cars as fashion statements and millennials who want everything soft and comfy in their lives.

Another great presentation by Paul. It’s a shame that a renowned company like Mitsubishi making not so very practical SUV. In terms of price, I think the quality doesn’t matched. Where other competitors offering much more practical off-road suv.

Agree with the comments about the exceed, well worth the price difference and also comes with digital dash which comes into its own on long trips in terms of data layouts for fuel, distance and navigation. I personally think it has a better road presence then the others as well in terms of asthetics. Would love it if they came out with a more powerful engine down the track

I can agree with you more about the suspension being soft, too soft actually. I own a 2017 prefacelift Montero Sport and i hate taking it on roadtrips with the family, why? because everyone is asleep lol, the comfort you get from the seats and the soft suspension is very good on short/long trips and around the city. Tight turning circle, tight steering very precise & direct not to soft not to heavy, trans is smooth and responsive, overall best purchase ever! Great review cheers!
