Overall, this engine is pretty awesome. In terms of power per liter, it's on another level compared to anything else Toyota has ever produced, and for three cylinder that's even more impressive. You have to consider that the load per cylinder is higher than a similar displacement four cylinder, meaning everything has to be stronger and deal with more heat.

@rickcupola6262
@rickcupola6262 Жыл бұрын
@@martinjimenez7392 Oh boy. Realistically speaking, a 3JZ is not viable in this day and age. The JZ family are all iron block engines, and with the age of widespread aluminum block engines, a new JZ engine will be too heavy for a modern application. Toyota has gotten the design right for an engine with good combustion design. An undersquare aluminum engine, with wide valve included angle that makes a straight path to the combustion chamber and direct injection (with optional port FI) is what they have done in their Dynamic Force lineup, and it gave these engines high thermal efficiency, so these engines are more fuel efficient and have a higher BMEP (torque per liter). An engine made from the ground up would make much more sense than trying to revive the JZ platform. Toyota can go the easy route and ask M Division for their S58, collaborate with Mazda for R&D in this platform, or make their own engine based on the Dynamic Force platform for their GRMN Supra. Only time will tell.

Calling it a JZ would only be a marketing stunt and not be a correct way to name it. A ground up engine with a new name would market worse but it would be better off with it. Sick of these JZ this, JZ that fanboyism. Toyota didn't call their more recent V8 a UZ for that reason. It's a completely different engine architecture, that's why it got a UR name not a UZ.

Most manufacturers offset their crankshafts these days it helps with the Conrod angle ratio. It was also used at the opposite end in the pistons of the Sierra Cosworth with their latter series engines where they offset the piston gudgeon pin.where it aided in reducing piston slap which thus helped in reciprocal mass (Less Friction Smooth Engine). Please note also that Peugeot was doing the same HP per liter in their RCZR Engine with 270hp from 1.6liters albeit with 4 cylinders back in 2014.

The fact that Toyota is doing this now, when they absolutely were never expected to do so after the gt86 and Supra, is just awesome. They made a 3 cylinder outperform a well known 4 cylinder in hp per liter when the 4 cylinder was putting more power down faster bc of the extra cylinder, even though the 3 cylinder could possibly (100% talking outta my ass here, correct me if I’m wrong please 👍🏾) rev higher due to light reciprocating and rotational mass. They both have drawbacks in the way of secondary imbalance issues, but ig it depends on who future proofed it the best. The fact that all they wanted, seemingly, was to make a good performance engine, with a fun power-band, all the while almost completely focusing on cooling to get there, and fucking accomplishing that in spades! Dude, I’m excited to build one of these with my kids after I buy a junked engine online, better start researching how now! 🤓 Edit: do you think if the after marked got better at machining secondary imbalance shafts for their needs, instead of almost always junking them, 4 & 3 cylinders would perform to a higher degree of difficulty with more ease?

Ref stroke, it is quite rare to see such a short stroke high boost turbo engine nowadays. E.g. the B58 (Supra) is bore 82 mm and 94.6 mm stroke and the higher revving S58 is 84 and 90mm respectively. So 89,7mm stroke is absolutely not very large and with the relatively large bore of 87,5mm the engine is almost square. Only Porsche engines (the non-Turbo turbocharged engines) are short stroke but they are less reliant on turbocharging.

Nice video but I believe there are three points, but are not fully correct A) you can run a twin scroll tc on an inline 4 (see ea888) B) you want to avoid large exhaust camphasers to avoid large exhaust valve pockets u on the poison crown, but which would impair the incline flow C) the variable air flow in the intake system looms to me like a second bypass scavenging the air filter to achieve easy breathing with high air flow. The shown component isn't an intake manifold from my point of view

All of the technology used in this engine has filtered down to all the dynamic force engines ie M15A-FXE (1.5 EFI DVVT-iE) , M15A-FKS (1.5 D-4 DVVT-iW) the 3 cylinder baby sisters to the GR engine so the GR engine is not a unique design or engine , it shows how well the dynamic force engine across the board are designed and built , just goes to show how much motor sport no how goes into the regular dynamic engines as well as the GR engine i all ready own a regular 3 cylinder hybrid yaris and have just ordered a GR so i appreciate how good these engines are in the every day world

Manufacturers are using undersquare bore x stroke these days because it improves emissions. Fuel/air in the crevice between the piston crown and the cylinder wall does not tend to be burn well, and is a major contributor to hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. You can decrease that crevice volume by moving the ring higher on the piston, but that has major limitations and disadvantages. Or, you can decrease the crevice volume by making the circumference of the piston smaller. In the end, manifolding and cam timing dictates power/torque curves; not bore/stroke.

I might be late here, but I have a proposal. It might be very ridiculous, but hear me out. What if Toyota could make a 3.2L twin turbo inline 6 based on this awesome engine to put on the Supra? It will have the benefits of an inline 6 (so bye bye balance shaft), and I think emissions would be good too since the G16E-GTS is already good in emissions. Though slapping 2x of the whole package in a MK5 Supra will be tricky, because the radiators the GR Yaris uses is comically large, compared to the tiny inline 3 sitting on the engine bay. This theoretical engine could revive the Supra name fully. This might also somewhat quiet down those overdone "nice bmw" cries by some people. But I could only hope in this dying age of the internal combustion engine.

5:53 It's not odd at all that Toyota only polishes the top part of the intake port. The reason is due to production cost. If you imagine multiple engine heads going down a conveyor belt, in this case the jig for the CNC machine only has to be set up one way and doesn't need to be reset. However, if Toyota were to polish the entire intake, they would need to flip the head over to polish the valve side of the intake, because even though it's mostly straight the valve side still has a bend. That would require resetting the jig every time they flip the head which takes time, or they will need a much more expensive jig to do every head. Or, if they were to do the entire intake without flipping the head with a cheaper jig, they would need to use a much more expensive five axis CNC machine. Lastly, even if they can do all this cost effectively, it would still take more time. And of course, time is money.

One pet peeve of mine is when people say that the GR86 isn’t a Toyota. The car is so obviously Toyota’s baby through and through. It was dreamt up by Toyota and the first working prototypes were built by Toyota way back. Toyota brought the idea to Subaru because they wanted a certain center of gravity that could only be made with a boxer engine. The engine was then codeveloped by both Toyota and Subaru with Toyota writing most of the checks. Toyota, after all, owns 20% of Subaru. Subaru don’t do RWD high revving sports cars. They do AWD rally cars. TOYOTA does high revving RWD cars. The 86 is Toyota’s baby. Not Subaru’s. I want to give credit where it’s due. Especially for a FANTASTIC car like the GR86. I have no such argument for the Supra though lol.

@@leepicgaymer5464Nah. Not stock internals. They had to have at least changed valve springs, camshafts, head studs and gasket. I'd be surprised if they didn't have to at least reinforce the top of the deck, if not go with a full closed deck setup. Same goes for the stock pistons...I's be surprised of they didn't have to upgrade them from stock (or just got really lucky on dyno day). These engines are great, and have potential, but they can be finicky and you really have to know what you're doing as they can actually be kinda easy to break at higher power levels (400+). Their main issue at higher power levels is the open deck design and the stock pistons tend to break or shatter fairly easily. They can't really handle any amount of detonation, so you have to be really careful with pushing the power up, and avoid detonation at every step. Head separation is an issue at higher power levels, which requires reinforcement. Especially on normal gasoline. Again, these are great little engines, with great potential but not as bulletproof as some like to claim, especially in stock form, if you want to really push them.

@@BigBear-- HKS started by playing with the ECU settings, refining the tune as they added modifications. The idea has been to push the stock G16E as far it can go, and so far that’s entailed adding a prototype bolt-on turbo and raising boost from the factory 1.4bar (20.6psi) all the way up to 2.7bar (39.7psi). To support this, a prototype intercooler was made up, along with a modified intercooler spray system and a hard pipe kit. The stock air box was also ditched in favor of an HKS Super Power Flow filter. The result of all this is 375hp - a solid 100hp gain over stock. But HKS didn’t stop there. An additional 100hp was gained through a 100-shot of nitrous oxide, for a total of 475hp. That’s enough juice for Taniguchi to effortlessly four-wheel drift the car around in recent tests.
@BigBear--
@BigBear-- 10 күн бұрын
@@leepicgaymer5464Right...I just want people to properly manage their expectations. The "700+ on stock bottom end" figures you hear being thrown around, aren't realistic daily numbers the motor can survive reliably. Generally they'll make that on either race gas, or high octane gasoline, and only in controlled environments for short bursts. Usually those guys end up running a secondary tune in the low 400's on E85 to save the motor. If you tried to daily that stock bottom end on that 700+ tune, you'll be replacing the motor within a few days. Now I'm sure you could get there reliably, but it'll require a fully built bottom end, with either a fully closed deck, or at the very least a reinforced top deck, sleeves, new pistons, bearings, maybe new rods and crank. Not including all the other supporting mods...valve train, cams, cam gears, injectors/fuel system, exhaust manifold, turbo, intercooler, LSDs, a new center diff (if you want to maintain awd), new trans, oil cooler(s), etc.

Now think about how much engineering had to go into the G16E-GTS to stay inline with Toyota's historically great reliability standards. At the end of the day, the G16E-GTS is an engineering masterpiece with how well Toyota balanced performance, reliability, and economy/emissions.
