In 2022 I was shopping for a used affordable sportscar. My top contenders MX-5 G184 RF, GT86, and BRZ. Since my budget was around 25-26K EUR, the BRZ dropped out relatively quick :D. First I tried MX-5 with Sportspack (Bilstein, Recaro) and then on stock suspension with standard leather seats. The sports pack version was definitely better in handling, but I was not too fond of the Recaro seats, they were too stiff for me as I was planning to daily the car and also take it for longer road trips. So the version without the sports pack would be my go-to option. Then I tried the GT86 and it was a clear winner for me, car was handling as sharp as the MX-5 with the sports pack and the ride quality was great. Even though it's over 200kg heavier with more power 205hp it felt livelier than MX5. Just before I was about to buy the GT86 I met a guy who let me drive a slightly moded MX5. His MX-5 had a Bilstein\Eibach B12 sportline kit and thicker anti-rollbars from Whiteline. Immediately this car felt way sharper than the GT86, whilst keeping the ride quality great as well. The other great thing was his engine tune, his MX-5 had 210hp and revved to 8K, this mod was similar to BBR kit, but on a way cheaper side (around 2K EUR). You would not believe what can 30 more HP do to such a small car :D it became a bullet. In the end, I managed to find MX-5 G184 RF with 30K km on in for 24K EUR, and I Immediately installed Bilstein\Eibach B12 sportline kit and Whiteline anti-roll bars for 1,5K EUR. So the total is still cheaper than the cheapest comparable GT86 I could find and I could not be happier. Planning to do the engine tune-up next year :)

If you're in the UK, go for the BBR 220 engine package. And upgrade your brakes with 4 pistons wildWood or brembo cause you'll need it after the tune haha. You may need to change your wheels as well if you change the brakes cause the OEM wheels does not clear them.

I have the first version of the ND(1) on the sports pack and its fair enough to say its a little less focussed that the GT86 was when i tested them back to back in 2016. However as with most mx5s mods came, the remap and exhaust puts it up to at least as much as a stock ND2 with what appears to be a massive amount of mid range added. The eibach spring kit i also got which is now an official Mazda option on the Mx5 removed 90% of the roll on turn in which combined with a proper alignment made it ridicules on back roads. Of course you can mod any car but it seems Mazda left a lot on the table for people to pick and choose how they wanted there new roadster to feel.

The MX5 chassis is made of cheese, it’s scuttle shakes and it’s because it has a rag top roof, stiff suspension highlights that issue even more, hence why they roll in a corner as the suspension is softer than it would be if it had a solid roof, at £30k it’s not particularly good value, if open top motoring is important, it’s a choice of 1, but it’s not a great drivers car, the GR86 is infinitely stiffer and drives with much better precision, the fake noise cost nothing to remove, it deserves to be called the winner of the 4 cars in test.

Odd the MX-5 was criticised for having a dull engine when nearly every other review say it's freer revving than the GR86 and does at least sound authentic unlike the (to my ears; subjectively awful) Nintendo sound augmentation in the latter. Unplugging it would be job 1 if I bought that car but then it would be too quiet and definitely wouldn't sound as good as the Mazda.

The GR86 sounds good unplugged (the dealer can disable it electronically so you don't have to dig under the dash), but inside the cabin it is a bit quiet. I fitted an Invidia Q300 to solve that issue. Loud enough to hear in the cabin, but not pissing off my neighbours.

Everyone just seemed like they were on an actual road trip and not playing up to a camera which is refreshing for KZbin! - Format is great and fun bringing the real-world costs into it, especially the totals at the end as all of us watching are going to want to know what it'd actually cost us to go and do these things all-in. - Cinematography also superb, as a videographer I appreciate it all! For next time: - I loved hearing Ollie's opinion and it gives everything an easy sense of comparison/flow but a few more soundbites from the rest of the team would be great. Having edited for years, I do get that it'd increase the workload by nearly 4x if everyone spoke as much, so fair enough if the budget/time is the restriction. - I've also only recently messed up audio of a shoot myself so can't throw rocks at all but some better audio in-car would be great. The Tascam DR-10L (£160 all-in) can run a safety track of audio alongside the main one so you never have clipping/peaking sound when there's excited shouting over the top of revving engines. It's also got amazing dynamic range for its price. - Just keep doing it! Loved this video!

Nah, I’m a 2021 MX-5 owner and even I’d take the GR86. I hate to admit it but Ollie is right, the car is a floppy mess in corners and the engine is super boring and lacks character. It’s fun with the top down but there are areas that could withstand a lot of improvement
@balazspinter4832 Жыл бұрын
@Delano mx5 owners are OLD folks. It's a kinda retirement treat for them! This is why suspension is not hardcore! However, for as little as £500 you can get lowering springs and antiroll bars, which unlock the potential of the chassis. Especially if you spice it up with Michelin pilot sport 5 tires. Engine is a masterpiece. I absolutely love it. Looks beautiful and sounds nice to Especially over 5500 all the way 7.5k.

@@jameswillard1nah the GR86 has oil issues so I wouldn’t go with that otherwise great car But Mazda is more reliable aside from that they have been consistently working on it unlike the GR86 also with this ND the small issues are fixed like the dull 2L engine is now better tuned and the clutch is heavier for longer use instead of lighter due to people not having the skill to rev match properly

@alexlee-isted5046 Жыл бұрын
@@kignacio It is due to some EU legislation that the car does not meet without extensive rework so it can only be sold in the UK and Europe for 2 years.

Comparing to the MX5, the biggest letdown of the GR86 is its poor throttle calibration. The throttle response is slow. It feels disconnected and non linear. It also has a fair bit of rev hang. The gear change has a short throw. However, it feels vague and lacks precision.

The biggest problem with GR86 is availability. Toyota are only making low numbers and most of the ones being made are either staying in Japan or going to the US. They’re so hard to get hold of that (as of this moment in time) AutoTrader has half a million cars listed for sale but actually has less GR86’s for sale than they do Bugatti Veyron’s. It means if you want one good luck finding one.

The only problem of the Mx-5 is the stock suspension, like the previous gt86 was let down by the silly Primacy tires. Some cheap lowering springs or some coilovers and its a transformed car, for me the obvious choice of that bunch

Is the firm suspension answer to every chassis...especially ones that are not proper stiff.?
@hydrotricine10 ай бұрын
@@mickeystanic4750 No, luckily in 2024 we have great options in consumer grade suspension, the term "firm" is nothing without the term "valving". Don't forget that the mx5 is around 1000kg and has modest wheel sizes, you don't need really high spring rates, you just need proper ride height and control, add to that a good fast road alignment ( the angles are completely adjustable from factory) and you have the best handler of this generation without going into exotic car money. The only negative aspect is the electric power steering that robs it of the feeling of the first Mx5 generations
@mickeystanic475010 ай бұрын
@@hydrotricine There are many owners of gt86 who after trying more grippy tires realized that HP Primacy (they are not the Prius tires) are good synergy between power, grip and fun on the street.
