The fact that the Miata has never been out of production should tell people something. That shows you how good of a car it always has been, also the fact that Mazda doesn't use parts from the parts bin for the suspension and other parts shows the dedication they have towards the Miata. Most companies today won't even make a sports car on their own.

Idk about you guys, but every Miata I've seen in Canada are high trim from models worth 40k plus. Most FRS/BRZs I see are below 40k, and in the end that really says alot more about affordability than looking at MSRP. My buddy couldn't find a Miata below 40k for over a year now, meanwhile a base model or higher trim brz are all available below 40k CAD. All I'm saying is I do not consider new miatas affordable, nor does the price point make any sense to me

I have a 2022 GR86 in trueno blue, manual. I have to say it is the most fun I have ever had in a car. I don’t mean to sound emotional but I have had a crap car my entire life and I have saved for years to buy a car I love since I make very little money. I almost cry every morning knowing that I bought this car cash and I get to drive it everyday. The insurance is only $86 a month (what are the odds lol) and the mileage isn’t too bad. Yet I get to have fun with anything I do. Turning off traction control and getting a little silly in an empty parking lot always puts a smile on my face. It’s so comfy and rewarding. Sorry for the rant but I have nothing bad to say about this car. Truly an amazing car for the price.

These two cars are honestly the most refreshing breaths of fresh air in the current performance car landscape. They don't care about impressing with spec sheet numbers or setting lap records. They just give you the timeless sports car formula and tell you to have fun. Cars like these used to be so common in the 80s and 90s and now they're all gone, but their spirit perseveres in these worthy successors.

If Mazda made it with a hard roof (that you cant retract) then there would be enough space to make it similarly practical in my opinion. But I doubt most people looking into MX5 are doing so to have it as their main/only car. Only I can be that stupid :D its big enough to do some grocery shopping, it will take a girlfriend/wife with you on a short trip...thats enough practicality for a 2nd car in the family in my opinion - in my case the only car to have because Im not planning on buying another 1.9tdi octavia xD

Been waiting for this one! ND2 owner myself, and it's my daily. Honestly for 99.9% of normal daily activities, it's plenty practical. I was never a convertible guy, and only went with the soft top to epitomize the lightweight characteristic of the car--but now that I've spent a lot of time with it, I have to say it adds a ton to the overall experience. S2000, twins, or ND, you're going to have a good time regardless of the one you're sitting in. Buy one and enjoy, you won't regret any of them.

Maybe it's because they had a fast back and not a true convertible but they underestimated the fun factor of having no roof by a long shot. I've owned a BRZ and I sold it for a Miata. Instantly was kicking myself for not buying a convertible 10 years ago. '13 BRZ and '13 Miata were nearly dead even in drag races (I had both for a short period) but the Miata felt faster and more enjoyable at any speed because of the soft top. I really enjoyed the BRZ but haven't looked back once.

ND2 RF owner here. It’s my daily up in Massachusetts so I got the hard top for the winter. Just got some top down time for the first time in a month and man does it make a difference! @@CattyScout If you look at their past videos, you'll see that they've driven plenty of convertibles, including all generations of the Miata. But I understand what you're saying, I've experienced cars featuring Targa configurations (as well as T-tops, etc.) and while I think they're great, they simply don't provide the full sensation of a true convertible (of which I've owned three in my lifetime, dating back to my first car). Despite my enthusiasm for them, I try to keep in mind that not everyone truly enjoys convertibles. Though I find this somewhat surprising, it's sort of like those people who just don't like dogs. Frankly that's almost unthinkable to me, but then maybe they were bitten when they were younger, or had some other sort of bad experience. Whatever, the reality is that we don't all like the same things.

The Miata RF has a retractable hardtop, so it can be driven with comfort in the winter, and the top off for summer. It just seems way more exciting to me than the GR86. I like that the Miata is smaller, and looks more like a baby Ferrari as you said. The sleek lines and angles appeal more to me. Nothing against the GR86, but when compared to the Miata, it just appears to be more bloated looking. Of course, this is all just personal taste and opinion. Went with an ND2 RF Club(far better exterior styling than the GT) and bolted on an axle back. Quality and reliability are much better than the 86 & BRZ as well. With the top down it’s the most fun I’ve had in a car including my time in super cars. For some people, myself included, there’s no substitute for lightweight go cart feel. The exterior styling of the Club is timeless and continues to turn heads everywhere I go. It’s whimsical yet mature… I’m only in my 30’s but that’s somehow important haha

I have exclusively owned only Miatas for the last 26 years as my only car. I have driven cross country, commuted to work in them in a busy city and used them for numerous things. I have never understood the practicality concerns. They have more than sufficient room for two people and accompanying luggage space. They have more than enough room for a single person or couple to go shopping or buy groceries. For anyway bigger, like a TV or refrigerator, well, I get that delivered. I suppose a caveat here is the size of the person. That is something that this video overlooked. I am only 5'9" and the 1st and 2nd gen Miatas (NA/NB) feel like they were made for me. I can understand where someone over 6' may feel cramped, especially if they are packing extra pounds. The 3rd gen (NC) Miata however is a bit larger in the interior and honestly, it feels a little too big to me at times. That just goes to show that having the right sportscar size depends on the person and it is like getting fitted for clothes or shoes. But, anyway, to me the correct Miata to show here is the roadster Club with the Recaro seats (to compare with the GR86 seats and more "sports" oriented tune), not the RF GT. The RF GT is nice and a little more luxurious with the top up. If you have security concerns in the city I can understand the advantage. On the other hand, all my years I have owned only Miatas with a softtop and never have had any issues with security. New Orleans isn't particularly safe and yet, no problems for me. The car jackers seem to go for the people in SUVs, they seem to ignore the Miata. Having a top that goes completely down, not "targa" style" like the RF, is what the roadster experience is all about IMHO, there is simply no replacement for it. Anything else just seems so "vanilla" to me in the driving experience. As far as the GR86 goes, it is a great car. Arguably a better car than the Miata. But which one is the sportscar with the soul and really the entire reason you get a sportscar in the first place? Miata is the only one. The GR86 is a 2+2 coupe. I have never understood the 2+2 idea. The seats are too small for anyone, even children, to fit comfortably in and thus... NOBODY ever uses those rear seats. They are just there for show. You end up folding them down to make room when you want to put more stuff in the car. Just a waste of seat space IMHO. Why not just make the GR86 a proper 2 seat sports coupe? Again, there is no need for rear seats because they are too small for anyone to ever want to ever use them. Doesn't make any sense. Finally, neither of these cars is designed for four people. They are designed for two people. For that, the 2+2 aspect of the GR86 is superfluous and just wastes space, length, weight and cost. And it still doesn't have the soul of the Miata. The Miata has everything two medium size people need, from my experiences and has such an endearing soul that never gets old. Driving to work is fun. For the larger crowd, I suppose I can understand needing something like the GR86... or perhaps a Mustang/Camaro may be an even better fit for those people.

The new one is certainly interesting, and I'll definitely be test driving one when I have a bit more free time. I will say though, having owned the RF now for 3 years, I have no problems having it as my only car. If you ever need more room, just call an Uber. What it does for you on everyday drives though is hard to replace without a convertible. The car is just so responsive. Body roll is a bit on the heavier side, but it just makes you feel like you're more on edge. The BRZ at the time felt so much more planted, but it didn't feel more lively. It's the ultimate toy really. The gr86 is a bit more practical and probably better suited for everyday drive but hell, if you're just a single guy and no wife or kids who needs practicality? You just get the Miata and always laugh while you're driving it.

If I didn't currently have an ND2 I would strongly consider the new GR86. With that said there is no way my ND2 could be my only car. I sometimes have to carry a lot of gear for work and the ND2 will not work for me. I do drive it every chance I get.

I had a Miata RF auto rental for 4 days in the big island last week. It is a must drive car for the twisty windy road if you ever visit Hawaii. I want one now so bad, but as they said, it would be really difficult to live with it as the only car.

I'm currently cross shopping the Miata and BRZ. I'm not considering the GR86 because I can get a BRZ below invoice thanks to loyalty and VIP discounts from Subaru. I also have access to Mazda S-Plan pricing so, even though the Miata would be more, either car would be a screaming deal. I previously owned a ND1 Miata GT manual soft top and I regret selling it everyday, absolutely adored it. That said, the 2nd gen BRZ, with its many improvements and excellent price, cannot be ignored. After discounts, the price differential between the Miata GT soft top manual (with optional paint) and BRZ Limited manual (with short shifter) would be about $2000 more for the Miata, which isn't much considering you get the drop top. Plus this will be a weekend car not my daily driver, so that makes the Miata even more appealing. I haven't actually driven a BRZ yet because there are none in inventory near me, but if I'm being honest with myself the Miata will probably be the winner.

As a Jdm fan really like both cars, MX-5 cornered the market. And mastered the roadster experience and the 86 is a great budget track car unless you can pick up a cheap type r to go up against it but was always disappointed. The Honda S2000 never came back but mostly disappointed that the UK who invented the roadster experience cars like the MG disappeared and lotus have never made a cheaper roadster.

Truly impressed with the new 86. I own a nd2 club convertible w/ brembo bbs package as well as some light track mods at this point. Gotta say I love it. Have for 3 years. That says a lot considering we also own a 718 cayman S with all the options. The Miata is very capable and you can mold it to your desire with some money and drive time. That being said I'm truly intrigued and am for sure going to test drive the new 86. Hopefully on the track when one of my friends buy one lol.

As an ND2 Miata Owner, I agree that the miata is not the more practical one. 86 does everything and everything so well. BUT!! the top down fun is also something that the GR86 is missing, something you will really appreciate when you actually experience it. So overall, I'd say the final score of this battle is 10:10 . You can't go wrong with either one. However, GR86 is cheaper, so it's the best bang for your buck sports car in the market right now. Great comparison, thanks Todd and Paul for the amazing production.

The story I heard about the origin of the Miata was that a couple of American guys took one of the Mazda bigwigs for a ride in a Triumph Spitfire, and he said "build me one." When you see them parked side by side, you can kind of understand. For many years I drove the "GR" version of the Spitfire...a Triumph GT6. Hard top fastback with a straight six. Co-worker of mine had an NA Miata, and I rolled past him like he was standing still.

I've been a Toyota-Mazda fanboy for many decades. I've owned several of them to name a few - 1972 Toyota Corolla SL, 1986 Toyota MR2, 1978 Mazda RX-7, 2013 Mazda 3, 2019 Mazda MX-5, not to mention some Mitsubishis, Hondas, etc. Yup, the previous BRZ or GT86 had that so-called torque dip. Driven some rental and friend's car. I haven't driven the new GR86, but on paper alone and viewing videos and reviews, it looks okay. The GR86 has the advantage of bigger trunk, still usable rear seats for extra storage, more head and leg room for taller and bigger drivers - but that's about it. The biggest advantage of the Miata over the GR86 is the retractable roof which can be a big plus for some. With regards to 0-60 time, both are at par although the GR86 would have a higher top speed, by 20+ mph. True, the Miata can't be your only car unless your all alone in this world. Right now, I have the Miata which always gives me that many smiles per gallon. The Miata is no rocket, but it's not exactly a slouch either. Just enough oomph for most driving purposes. Sure, I've driven cars with 2-3 times the power, but it's just not the same. As the saying goes, it's more fun to drive a slow or slower car fast than a fast or faster car slow. If you say why not drive the fast car fast? Well, more likely you're gonna get a ticket faster too...hahaha. If I had to give up this one, maybe I would go for the GR86. The only problem is, it's not a true, 100% Toyota since it has the Subaru engine. Not that I hate Subaru, but I'm still not comfortable with them. Anyway, that new GR86 is a lot better both on paper and on reviews.

And while I do like the BRZ front a lot, at first it doesn’t feel as cohesive as the GR. I am as big of a Miata fanboy (and Mazda in general, I currently drive a 2016 Mazda 3) as you will find, but... I have to agree with your conclusions. IF it's going to be your only car, go with the GR86, especially if your situation means the Miata top will be up much of the time. However, if your life is such that you can afford a Miata toy, or put up with its limiations as your only car, the Miata has two big selling points: 1) Putting the convertible top down transforms driving in a way no sunroof/moonroof/targa top/etc. can duplicate. 2) The genius of the original Miata (which has carried over to the ND) is how exciting it makes ordinary driving. You rev the engine, you wind through the gears, you look at the speedo...and you're doing 45 mph having had an absolute blast getting there. I've never driven anything else that matched the Miata's ability to make sedate driving exciting.
