For what feels like years I have been wanting to drive the Toyota GT86. Listers Toyota in Stratford-upon-Avon where kind enough to lend me their lovely demonstrator.
The GT86 is seen as the spiritual successor to the legendary Toyota Corolla AE86. The AE86 kick-started Japan's drifting culture and was cemented in legendary status thanks to being the star of the illegal Japanese street racing series - Initial D.
The engineers at Toyota made sure the GT86 encapsulated the essence of the Toyota Corolla AE86: lightweight, rear wheel drive, communicative steering with the traction from the tyres kept to a minimum. Meaning, your average driver could reach the Toyota's limits on the road without having to travel at warp speed.
When the GT86 was launched in 2012, it was addressing the criticism that Toyota no longer offered an exciting sports car within its model range. Instantly the GT86 was a massive hit and widely praised by the motoring world.
