My guy 37 mpg absolutely sucks after downsizing from a Corolla at such a day and age, Toyota be throttlin mpg ATM. Honda cranked out 50mpg highway with their 1989-95 civics but a Yaris 40 years later can pull any more than 37? On top of that, nobody ever saw actual improvements on fuel economy when the Atkinson cycle came out; petroleum companies are absolutely pulling some strings here.

The Yaris has been about in Europe for over twenty years in on shape or another, and they are brilliant. They have strong, reliable, dependable mechanicals with good fuel economy, magnificent build quality and ease of service. Most of the European cars will be manual (or stick shift) transmission and are driven by people of all ages from driving instructors to seniors and as a used buy, they are always well looked after well maintained.

Americans love fast sports cars with automatic transmissions. A 5 speed stick shift is just too complicated for them to operate.

It's cars like these plus the Mazda 2 and Suzuki Swift that we should be promoting, Cars that sip fuel, can easily be driven in towns or on long journeys and are reliable. The average car has one or two occupants most of the time. Sure there are big families and drivers that actually need big cars but most households should have one of these as an alternative.
@smileychess8 ай бұрын
@@scooterbob4432 - I suspect a big part of it is that most driving schools now only teach in automatic cars. I'm a perfect example: Not once was I taught to drive a manual transmission, and as an adult it has never come up because of how common automatics are. I understand how it works, but you wouldn't want me in your car the first time I try manual shifting.

I replaced my worn out '92 Mitsubishi Galant with a used '07 Yaris last September. It had just under 200,000 when I bought it from Woodbridge Auto Auctions in Woodbridge, Virginia,. I drove my Mitsubishi from Tennessee up there ( I found the Yaris online) and traded in the Mitsubishi (they gave me $300 trade in on it) on the Yaris. I drove it home, and was amazed at how peppy it was! I followed a group of cars running fast, sometimes we were running 100, and I stayed right with them! I'm amazed by this car, and they were only asking $3900 for it! It has never been wrecked, had new brakes, tires and clutch, interior is in great shape, and the air is cold! And yes, it's a 5 speed. I absolutely love the car, it's really great! In five months it hasn't burned a drop of oil, and I drive it hard! I HIGHLY recommend this car if you want fun reliable transportation!

I'm so glad you did a video on this car! I just bought a 2012 SE and even though it's a little slow, has a noisy interior, has a 4 speed 😩, after I lowered it, it handles really well, I get about 29mpg mixed, parts are cheap and plentiful and it looks sporty. I actually traded in my turbo Genesis coupe with 80k miles and that gave me about 22mpg mixed for this Yaris with 124k and I don't regret a thing.

Scotty, Toyota sell the even smaller 5 door Aygo in Europe. It is a perfectly usable 2+2 - as long as the +2 aren't too big. Fuel economy is terrific and it has the same 5 years/100,000 miles warranty as the bigger Toyotas. In France it enjoyed the best car advert I have ever seen. A city street scene had a Cafe Aygo, a Hotel Aygo, a young man wearing an Aygo University T shirt, a street name sign "Rue St Aygo"......

@@djkenny1202 yup. basically its like this: Toyota = slightly more expensive, less power, much better paint and better made (if materials are the same, it's designed better/seems to stave off rattles longer). Honda = cheaper, more engineering went into weight distribution, handling, and sports oriented driving. Metals and paints fall to the wayside. interior lasts nearly as long, different things fall short (dash lights usually. more screens = more burnout). panel gaps atrocious. (my 2018 civic had rust under the door plastics pretty much a year later. car was never in that much rain. the subframe had this gross looking welding splatter under the black paint from the factory which all later rusted too. fine car, crappy manufacturing)
