American is finally getting the Land Cruiser reintroduced into our market. Big Power numbers and an efficient hybrid are exciting, but other markets like #australia are getting a simpler setup that could have #usa missing out.

Kirk, How do the Australians feel about losing the tailgate mounted spare tire and 40 gallon fuel capacity that used to come with their beloved Prado?🤔 Will their Diesel engines be impacted by Toyota's recent emission failures?🤫 How many variants of the 4Runner do they get?😛 When it comes to pickups and SUVs, I am only jealous of their $22,000 Hilux Workmate with the legendary 2TR-FE engine and their access to the Land Cruiser 70 Series 🤩 When it comes to cars, they are awfully fortunate to have the GR Yaris we are denied.

The main reason most of us overlanders want a diesel is for the fuel range. That’s usually one of the most limiting factors for US spec vehicles. I’d rather have the range, but after owning 4 different diesel cars & trucks, they get expensive to repair. Not to mention they are more expensive than to fuel and that eats up all of the mpg savings. But, if I won the lottery I would for sure have a V8 turbo diesel Land Cruiser or two in my fleet.

I think the Land Cruiser Prado in Australia gets more features than the US models because they don't get the Lexus GX (historically they didn't get the first and 2nd generation GX). They get the NX, the RX and the LX, but not the GX. I don't know why Lexus does that, but that's just how it is.

Australia will get the GX as well for this generation. I figure the reason why Toyota chose to use the old 2.8L engine for the new LC250/Prado is because it is the more conservative option and to better differentiate the GX & the Prado in terms of power cause the 2.4L Turbo Hybrid doesn't really fall behind the Twin Turbo V6 power figures by that much and can potentially get far better fuel economy.

It's just a matter of "the grass is greener of the other side" type of thing in terms of engine option. The 2.8 diesel won't have the same level of power than the new 2.4L Turbo Hybrid Petrol, but it is a proven engine that's been really reliable. The new 2.4L Turbo Hybrid has far more power & torque but we need to see how it will goes in the long run for reliability.

Australian here with a new Landcruiser Prado on order. When I get it I will throw the 3rd row of seats away, if you want lots of passengers buy a bus. Impossible to sell a gas powered offroad vehicle here, very few want one. Diesel gives far better range and longevity, which suites our unique driving conditions - bloody long way to the next town.😂

As you probably know, mild hybrid has been used by other car companies for many years now, I feel like Toyota could have been using it for their diesels (and other BoF vehicles) for years now… as for the tech not changing the peak power and torque, could this be because it provides this assistance upfront so both curves would start off high then the non mild hybrid versions but then the tech cuts off before the diesel reaches its 150kW and 500Nm?

Finally! Thanks for saying this. Many in the media simply say that this is the new Land Cruiser, but it is partially true. Because this is not the proper replacement to the LC200. Many compare this with the old LC200 when these are largely different vehicles.
@AbrahamArthemius
@AbrahamArthemius 3 ай бұрын
That is true because the Land Cruiser itself has branched into three different models for quite some time. - LC300 (previously LC200) for the big luxury model with all the gadgets. - LC250 (previously LC150) for those who wanted a slightly smaller model and a bit more affordable. - LC70 (nearly unchanged since the 80s) for those who really want a truly bare bones vehicle as a workhorse.

Exactly how many Land Cruisers does Toyota sell in Australia they have a lot fewer people than Texas just a few more than Florida? Australia buys 42,000 Land Cruisers a year while the US buys 145,000 4Runners. If Toyota offered all the same variants of the Land Cruiser in North America they do in Australia they would easily outsell Australia.

The engine you're getting in the US is much better than the aging 2.8L Diesel ... you're getting much better Horsepower and Torque. 48v tech is not that great, the hybrid tech you get in US is better. I hope Toyota brings the petrol-hybrid engine down-under. As for the variants - although we get 5 models, the 4x4 one is missing 3 rows.
