Stuck in the soft sand again… does my Toyota Landcruiser 200 series Crawl Control system work to get me out?
Heading off from an absolutely stunning beach camp on the southern coastline of Western Australia, I found myself bogged to the axles. I had already lowered the tyres pressures on the vehicle to ~17PSI on the front and ~18/19 on the rear, however this wasn’t enough.
This was the perfect chance to see whether the Toyota’s Crawl Control function is a gimmick, or the real deal?
I hope you enjoy today’s video and check out my other crawl control tutorial on how to activate and use all of Toyota’s systems in detail: • Landcruiser 200 | EVER...

Crawl has saved my bacon a couple of times. The most impressive was while towing a boat on Fraser. I was heading downhill and negotiating a big step down. I ended up off the side of the track in super soft sand so as not to damage the outboard on the drop off, sitting on the chassis rails both sides. Couldn't reverse uphill and couldn't go forward. My mate was ready to get digging, 15 seconds of crawl control and we were away. So impressive.

Can't wait to get mine...not that I wish to get bogged but see this work. Save using the maxi's. One thing I would be worried though if I already had low tyre pressure (some of beaches western south coast) we've gone down to 12psi (Yeagerup 10psi) would be worried about rolling the tyre off moving the wheel side to side!
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
This feature is absolutely awesome! A little bit of engineering magic I reckon. For sure, it would all come down to circumstance and adjusting your driving to suit as such. I have been involved in slightly panicked recoveries where pressures have been lowered to 5PSI, but this really is for emergency cases only. It can work, but potential damage to the tyres is significantly increased.

After 5 min good old Aussie arrives, have you let your tyres down mate? No we'll try that worked a bit, Aussie gent pulls a tow sling out the back of his estate car, attaches it to mine tows me for 500 yards till things and get a little better, tells me how to drive proper Aussie beach style and we do it. Also good news about under car body wash. Had a great time in Australia good luck to ya all. Thanks again mate.

@@rkmckenna I'm not sure the Y62 has a dedicated 'crawl control' system as such. I reckon a combination of these electronic features would give it a red-hot go at it. Saying this, I would say it would come down to vehicle familiarisation and practice to get it to work. Hey mate, I really got alot out of this video, so much so that on a recent trip to yeagarup beach in the southwest i purposely got my 2016 GXL bogged 4x to test out the crawl control featurre. Admittantly it was actually quite difficult to bog the car without reinflating the tyres but on one of the occasion i hat bogged sufficiently enough so that all electronic aids besides activating crawl control would not pull her out. But just as seen here in your video crawl control worked great everytime recovering the big heavy rig under its own steam. I am so impressed even joking to the boys about throwing the maxtrax in the bin aha. I have even noticed using it through the hilly poweline tracks down south it works good for steep downhill descent when carefull control is required straddling deep rutts/washouts and with a bit of finess with your foot on and off of the accelerator i can power on going up hills which will disengauge the crawl control then when going back down hill just slightly power off and shel re engauge with the tell tale ABS noises and jerks. Might want to think about plugging those chassis rail holes in your wheel wells with rubber grommets as it looked like quite a bit of salty sand got inside the rails. I used a rubber floor mat & cut my own for the bigger holes & used black silicone on top of rubber grommets as they seem to deteriorate really quickly & the inside bits break away. P.S I cut a little groove with a hacksaw blade on the bigger ones so they seated in the rail.

The one reason that you were stuck is that the steering wheel is not on the proper side of the vehicle. Everybody knows that the steering wheel is on the left side. -) But seriously that was pretty cool to watch. I don't think you needed to move your front tires. You look at when you first started to crawl you could see your car moving just so gently. I know why you were moving your front wheels That's just something we all do when we are four wheelers we know that you can turn your front and perhaps get a better bite in the sand or dirt. I think in this case you did not need that but it didn't hurt anything either. You definitely got a new fan of your videos here in the States. I already hit the like button and subscribe button. I'm getting ready to watch the other video you refer to at the end about explaining all of this stuff and how it works. Thank you for taking your time to show everybody how that system worked. I'm still not 100% sure how it worked but it was nice to see it work if that makes any sense.

Haha, yeah it would seem a little weird for those not used to the wheel on that side, just like it is for me the other way round... Thanks mate, appreciate your comments here. I completely understand your comments regarding turning the wheel left and right and actually did a bit of a test with that in a recent video where my crawl control overheated (released a few weeks ago). To be honest, when you're inside the vehicle, it's hard to tell whether you are moving at all and much easier to see on camera from outside. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you will enjoy my others and future video's to come! This channel is all about trying to educate those who might be thinking about getting out and about in their own 4WD and specifically their 200 series Landcruiser. Cheers, Nathan.

@@XploringOz watching the video I can imagine how hard it was to know if you were moving. I think if it wasn't on video and I was standing there I might not have seen the vehicle move so slightly. I cannot wait to watch your video about the overheating. Until I saw your first video I had no idea that Toyota did that. Here in the States where I live our particular off-roading involves more snow and ice than sand and mud. I own two different 4x4 vehicles and my oldest one is a 1990 F-150 4x4 with the 5.0 engine. That is my go-to vehicle when the weather gets very bad here. I have never met a blizzard that I could not get around in. My other one is a newer Ford expedition and that one really doesn't do well off-road or in the snow. I just love the old school four-wheel drive that my pickup truck offers. I really look forward to watching your adventures.

@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, nice car! So you don't need to use the diff lock if you're using crawl control. The vehicle will determine how quickly or slower the wheels need to turn and will automatically regulate power around the vehicle for maximum traction. In some cases (like soft sand) diff locks can actually hinder progress. Hope that helps. Cheers, Nathan.

You can see the car still had traction control on when you first tried to get out of the bog! The front wheels were spinning but the back was doing nothing. You can't just press the traction control off, it stays on even though it lights up. You have to hold the button in for 5 seconds to fully disable it! You can see when you engage crawl control it turns it off as all 4 wheels spin equally.

Better demo..... My concern, while watching at 3:40 to 3:55, the vibration on your bumper was very clear, and for me, in the long run, due to wear and tear, that could somehow break (but it is supposed to be stronger than the original). Was the vibration, that hard, really normal? Or something lacking with your improvised bumper?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, so this is completely normal. This is because the bumper is attached to the chassis of the vehicle and the body of the vehicle is isolated or separated from the chassis by rubber body mounts. I can assure you that the bumper is solid and mounted well to the chassis, but this just demonstrates how well the rubber body mounts work on the cruiser to take out these vibrations from the body...

Great video. I’m surprised that this is such big news to Toyota guys. My 2014 Discovery D4 has this (and has been available as a standard feature in the range since about 2008). It really shows that a good traction control system is not to be scoffed at. Too many people, in my opinion, get overly obsessed with the idea of lockers and live axles. True, in extreme 4wd situations those are hard to beat. But if you want a comfortable touring 4wd with strong off-road chops, a great traction control system coupled with a lockable centre diff and an independent suspension is very effective.

Gareth, I’m open to being wrong about it. What in your opinion is the function of crawl control?
@mrmackie85
@mrmackie85 3 жыл бұрын
@@arielle_australia your traction control requires wheel spin to initiate, like all other brake traction aids, the wheel sensors need to detect different axle speeds across the diff to engage. Crawl control, is a set and forget function, no throttle input requires by driver, it drives for you, with a very aggressive abs response to ensure limited slip accurs to maintain constant wheel speed on all 4 corners. It's like comparing downhill descent control with the brake peddle. It cannot be replicated by the driver. 👍
