I recommend having the rear spark plugs replaced while the intake manifold is off depending on how many miles are on them. Otherwise it's a pain to change them.

@@darthgamer6080 Depends on the mileage. It's a part that rarely needs replacement on that engine. 280k on mine so far. The biggest fuel system issue has been carbon buildup in the throttle body.

I wouldn't put the cover on top of the engine when prying off the old gasket, because it can be brittle and the pieces will fall into that engine compartment and you cannot get those pieces out. Do the prying on a covered floor.

I have only one complaint. never ever use metal tools to remove the gaskets, use wood or plastic as a metal tipped tool can gouge the metal and create a small channel that oil can leak from or create microscopic burs that can damage the gasket from vibration over time. If you need leverage they sell hardened plastic tipped metal tools for this exact purpose.

Terrific vid mate. It amazes me how you guys keep yours head together when doing complex process tasks like this; getting the vacuum hoses back in the right place, not forgetting harness connectors etc. What I don't understand (and nobody talks about it so I assume everyone else knows) is how you organise your nuts and bolts so they go back in the right place. That's the nightmare. Having 3 left over at the end. kudos.
@HelpingHandAutoRepair3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I usually put bolts and nuts right back where they came from when I remove a part if possible. That way I don’t lose them and I remember where they go for the most part. Sometimes you can’t do that so in that case, I will separate those fasteners in their own piles next to the part I take off so I know that they belong to that certain part.

Also found out this is where the oil sludge can start from in 97 - 00 engines... the oil gets clogged under the valve cover baffle plate. Probably your only chance to clean with degreaser or heat before you do the valve cover up. You put the Tube Seals on Upside Down. The rounded edge, on the Fel Pro gaskets should be facing the Cam cavity on the Valve Cover. You shouldn't have to 'feel the tube' around the seal when reinstalling the cover. The Tubes should just funnel right in. Also, I noticed that you were removing the Tube Seals the "Hard Way". There are two very small tabs that are holding the old Tube Seal in place. All you have to do is slightly bend them up, with a small screwdriver, and get them out of the way. Once you tap in your new Tube Seal, the small tabs can be lightly tapped back down. For reference, they are directly beside the "rivet" on either side of the Tube Seal.
@proman12104 жыл бұрын
Good call. This is what I observed too. The tube seals are installed reversed. Should still work though. I am replacing my 2000 Sienna VC seals right now. Got a little confused about the little tabs you mentioned that hold the tube seals in place. I consulted a Toyota dealer, the tech just told to yank the old one out and tap the new one in. But I am concerned the new seals will be scratched or damaged by the tabs. I just learned from other videos that the tabs should be bent upwards and back down as you stated. Good video though. Very clear and informative. Thanks a lot Helping Hand.

Excellent video - especially like that you don't disconnect the coolant and breather hoses from the throttle body - these inevitably leak if disconnected on a 20+ year old car. Remove as little as possible! Your video shows the injector harness being set aside to the left and the vacuum manifold assembly over to the right. Are you certain this step is required? The 1999 Camry V6 Toyota repair manual says that you only disconnect everything from the plenum and the plenum should lift off. Is it possible in your view to not disconnect the injector assembly and vacuum manifold and set them aside in order to remove just the plenum?

@@HelpingHandAutoRepair Was just at a shop where they charge $100/hr. Quote was for $420 but they said that if they break a sensor or other parts it could cost more. Not sure where to even take it from here. Go for it?? This is why I soooo look forward to owning an electric vehicle one day. :D THANKS for your response!!! You do great work! Oh, btw I live in Chicago.

I showed how to put the gasket into the valve cover. I didn’t show me putting the valve cover back onto the head. Figured that was pretty self explanatory.

Hey how do u remove the wire under the throttle body? The one directly under.
@HelpingHandAutoRepair4 жыл бұрын
An electrical connector? Or is it some other type of line? Forgive me as this was some time ago.

There is one bolt on top and 2 on side. 10mm Top has a stud, #5 inverted torx, it helps to take it out.

I just did this job but when i turn on my car it smells like its burning a lot of oil and smokes do you have any idea why this happens?
@HelpingHandAutoRepair4 жыл бұрын
If you didn’t clean off the old oil that has been leaking, it will take some time for it all to burn off for good. You could also have installed the gasket incorrectly or it may have dislodged.

Good video but why are you removing seal/gasket on top of the engine just grinding it back n forth while you try to remove every seal. Making me cringe. Not saying it’s doing damage but I’m sure there’s a better place than just to flip the valve cover over an let it scrape all the internals

Because after working on cars for years, you know what you can do and what you can’t. As you just said yourself, “…not saying it’s doing damage…”

Never use the Fel Pro Blue Gaskets. They are Nitrile and they swell. Only use Natural Rubber.

@@calebp2743 I'm a Toyota MDT, only use Natural Rubber Gaskets. As for the 6 months, that nothing, wait for 3 years and then when you have to replace them, when they are taken off, you will see that they are "Swelled"
@HelpingHandAutoRepair2 жыл бұрын
Sorry. I use Felpro all the time. Been on my 2JZ motor for 5 years now. Zero leaks. Not to mention all the other cars I have done now for the past 16ish years. Also you need to speak facts instead of lying. Gel-pro gaskets are made of silicone rubber not nitrile. That is very incorrect. Factory gaskets are also made of silicone rubber.
