Huge thanks for the inspiring video! I wasn't sure how needed that was for the very well maintained, mostly indoor kept 2001 MR2 I bought this summer, I followed your description and started by checking the indoor water inlet area which was indeed quite dirty. After cleaning up the grime, I recovered the velcro straps pieces just like those we see in your shots: they detached from the upper roof sleeve ducts originally helping keeping everything attached and in place I guess. I am going to try to strong-glue them back in place later. A word of caution about what you did lifting up the upper parts out of the way, they are fixed by a flat string piece with a button, perhaps worth checking this and opening it first. For the drain duct itself, I was worried about removing the side plastic vents with their fragile pins - many people mentioned them breaking when prying that part open. Therefore I opted for using a "trumpet cleaner" tool that was recommended elsewhere (flexible wire with a small brush at the end) only from the inside, and managed to flush and clean the ducts well. One side was partially clogged (draining slowly when pouring water from inside), got full clogged when I started to brush the duct, but having it full with water and moving the brush tool against the clog I could get it released and clean enough.

Need to get on to doing this on my mk3 soon. Every time I pull out after a rain fall I hear water sloshing around behind me an worry. Thanks for the advice.

It is easier to enter the drain pocket from the outside. Just hold the softtop half open and reach down the outside. It is easy to look down there also.

Just done mine tonight. Easy enough job. As a suggestion rather than picking those bits of crap up by hand from inside the car, get a vacuum cleaner in there. The drain valves behind the side vents just pull off so it'll easier to clean off the car. Good choice of cleaning product though re Elbow Grease! Went out and got some mid work 😅

HOW do you get a vacuum in there? I Can barely get my head to see the darn drain.... I've cleaned the vent but the drain is so clogged on one side the water doesnt rush out quickly and I'm stuck on how everyone gets such easy access to the drain? I removed the same pannels and everything its just so far down.

I inherited an MR2 from my MiL and could hear water sloshing around after heavy rain so had to attend to these drainage channels. Stuck my hand in blindly to scoop out all manor of dirt and brought out handfuls of broken glass! Clearly the rear window had been smashed in the past. My MiL had the car over 5 years and it was before her time so who knows!
