I bought a toyota this way from a volume dealership. They didn't have it in stock but they pulled it out of allocation and got it in in only about 1 week. Here's the other thing I think is confusing people. Port-installed options. Certain things apparently, since I did it, accessories that are installed at the distributor, most of the time you don't want it and don't want to pay for it but in my case I wanted something and was willing to pay for it and they got it in with that accessory installed. So it can seem like you are ordering it and to a certain extent, you are, just that what you are ordering are *accessories* and they are installed on a vehicle that the dealership called dibs on.

I could never get a great price on an order! I have always done better buying a vehicle they wanted to move off the lot.

Au Contraire. When you buy something that the dealership is going to get in anyway, they don't have to bring it in to inventory and have it sit on a lot for who knows how long, no major lending costs on it, no time spent showing it to anyone or advertising it, it's presold, in and out, easy peasy. I'm sure they'd much rather do every deal that way. Just peel off the plastic and tie a ribbon on it.

Some dealers will give excellent discounts on custom orders as they don't have to mess with selling or paying for it. Other dealers will not deal to well as they are pissed ypu are not buying one off the lot and they try ro get you to.

I know a lot of people who won't buy a Toyota truck anymore, because they hate that they can't order a truck and get it exactly how they ordered it. As a former coworker said "why order a Toyota, and maybe have to wait 9 months for a dealer to maybe get one allocated how I want it, screw that." And I understand that. Ford kind of does the same thing. I had a coworker order a 22 F-150, he wanted it in area 51 blue, super crew cab, locking rear 3:73 axle, 6.5 foot bed, sport appearance package and XLT high package. Within a couple weeks, he started getting emails basically saying we're not building trucks with these specific options right now. He eventually found one on a lot that has everything he wanted except it was a darker blue and that's what he went with. After watching him go through that ordeal, I won't be ordering anything for awhile.

14mpg city and 16mpg combined is "not the greatest"?? That's a HUGE understatement. A 5.0L V8 towing 5,000lbs...(and likely up hill)...gets better fuel economy

That's actually about right for engines that are even smaller. But in the real world, subtract 15% from EPA.

Some of the configurations of Toyota trucks are actually quite bizarre. They seem to be all over the place. Some trucks will have everything but some of the most obvious options you would think. And others have nothing but have some obscure option as if it was a leftover part that they just threw on. I don’t buy the efficiency BS. It doesn’t cost them much time at all to take a for example, lunar rock truck, then add the options the person wants. In fact that would suggest the exact opposite. It smacks of arrogance, a highly efficient intelligently designed and planned out build process should be able to build virtually any Tacoma . A person wants no matter what options are ordered. The only thing that I can see taking a little bit longer would be a specific bodyor paint, but the rest of the damn truck is the same.
