Toyota Pickup Flywheel and Clutch Install

Bringing the 1988 Toyota Pickup into the fold by upgrading the clutch and flywheel set up for the 22R. Really excited to be getting to work on the daily driver and bringing it onto the channel.

I did this with my 86...I kept the 4spd rear end...it's a 4.10 ring...brings the RPMS down at freeway speed in 5th...also allows you to skip 3rd when accelerating.

Great video man! About to jump into a clutch replacement in my 86 pickup as well and super informative and knowledgable. These trucks are almost bulletproof. Definitely keep up the content, following along now! Did you need any parts outside of the LCE clutch kit and flywheel? (I need to borrow a trans jack and grease gun for sure!)

Dan Marino Thanks! I picked up some new flywheel bolts from LCE just for insurance. The clutch kit comes with everything you need to install, including the key, new hardware, and new pilot bearing. Other than that this install is pretty straight forward. Good luck with your build!

Bread works just as good a grease without the mess to get the pilot bearing out as a matter of fact just about 3/4 of an old stale hotdogs bun is all you need

The way the 22R powerband is broad mid range torque monster, if anything, adding flywheel inertia would be the direction to go.

That is true but also remember these things are built for racing. Going for the lighter flywheel was more of a personal preference but it really livens up the engine and makes it fun on the back roads. Couple that to the 2400 lbs chassis it makes for a fun combo.

I know you did a 5 speed swap, but I am wondering if I could swap a six speed transmission into my 93. I do a lot of highway travel, so it would be better for fuel economy at higher speeds.

Great video! I just got the kit from LCE and it came with a rear main seal, rear main seal retainer gasket, and something called a "Seal Saver". I notice you didn't replace yours. If there isn't any leaks, would you recommend replacing them both, neither, or just the rear main seal while I have it open, or should I just leave it alone and keep them for later if they ever start leaking.

Thanks! Yeah I had to replace the bottom end of my engine a few years back so that seal for me is nearly brand new. If it's not leaking and there are no cracks then you're probably okay but if that seal is pretty old I'd probably replace it since I already have the transmission out. That's more just a personal decision.

How did it just come out of the tunnel? I had to flip my trans fully upside down to get out and it really doesn't want to go all the way back in lol

Yeah the crossmember is really annoying. I had to flip it on it's side and wrestle with it. Flipping it on it's side seemed to give me the most leverage to maneuver it out and back in.

Yes! Same flywheel. Am replacing my 2L with a 3L right now, using the same flywheel.

Does this clutch make the pedal stiffer? If it does is it still good enough for a daily driver?

Feels just like the stock clutch. Been driving on it for a few years and feels comfortable

What kind of grease do you use on the clutch splines?

Just a general moly grease. I've had different brands so I dont remember what I would have put on there

Have you ever tried bread instead of grease it works just as well and it a lot easier to clean up

Yeah bread works just as well. I prefer the grease because I dont have to do any hammering and potentially striking the crank makes me nervous.

I've got an 88 toyota pickup 2wd and I'm getting 17 mpg at best. How are you getting 30 mpg?

MPG can very a lot by how you drive. I live just outside a city so theres not a lot of stop and go traffic. Also, my wheels are still a 185 so I'm basically rolling on dinner plates (less rolling resistnece). Above all that is just doing routine maintenance.
