Installing a newly rebuilt W56 5 speed transmission into my 1988 Toyota Pickup.Also, adding a few more upgrades including LC Engineering's short shifter kit.

Terrific work, thanks for sharing. I've always wanted to do this swap. I'm rolling on a 4 speed 375k time bomb, but these trucks are unbelievably reliable. One HUGE caution about replacing u-joints: do NOT drive in the opposite end cap like that! You risk smashing or distorting the needle bearings in the caps. The rolling surfaces of the 'cross' shaped center section must be inserted into the needle bearings of both caps before driving them together. This ensures that the center section and needle bearings in the caps seat properly. Sorry for the feedback. But I always see people just drive in end caps with one cap loose, and used to myself before I smashed some 260z needles and learned the hard way. It is an easy mistake because the natural-gravity position is with the center section completely seated in one end cap and the other cap free floating. Instead you have to awkwardly hold the center section up a bit such that the rolling surfaces are started into the needles of both end caps. Especially if you hammer the caps on, since hammering can shift the needles.

I watched this video for fun, but I had no idea that this video would help me finally get the idea of how to replace the clutch on my 99' Tacoma. The 99' Tacoma also has the stupid cross member that's in the way of the transmission and it's unable to be unbolted. Thank you a ton. This video was extremely helpful!

@@OldDatsun I agree. It's the reason why I've delayed on replacing the clutch on mine. I don't understand why either Toyota couldn't make the cross member removable or have another mount to hold it in place, Then, that way, the transmission drops easily. Poor design by Toyota. At least the trucks are reliable, so I guess it's a trade off lol.

@@sleeks9939 Sleek S Good question. I wouldn't know about the speed sensor size but check the measurement. Also, if your ecu has any inputs or sensors from the transmission just note that. Usually going from auto to a manual is easier than the other way around

Nice vid, I did the same with mine. Ended up running a newer 89-91 transmission bracket for the trans to line up better, still only had 2 out of the 4 bolt holes on the trans line up, engine needs to move back a couple inches. Lucky you had the tools to custom a bracket. Nice work

.Hi, I'm considering swapping the W40 out of my '88 2WD for a 2WD W58. Could you please provide a list of parts you needed for this swap? I'm going to do the clutch and flywheel, and i'm considering the short throw shifter kit. You mentioned the transmission mount, will one from any 2WD 5-speed truck work? You put the gear oil in the hard way. You can pour it inside the cab at the gear shifter.

I've read that I needed to fill it until over flow and this made more sense to ensure proper amount.

All you need to do is remove the fill plug put an oil drain pan under it & let it overflow just a tad. Yeah, a hand pump, when filling from the top is not an option, makes life a lot easier.@@OldDatsun

Is it 20R or 22R? I think the bellhousings will bolt up both to the gearbox and engine block but I'm not sure about the 78 chassis (I've never worked on one). But transmission mounts are pretty easy to alter and fabricate.

Yeah, the 4 speed was great. Honestly, did fine on the highway. The 5 speed takes a bit more to drive it then the old 4 speed but after some eventual performance upgrades I think the 5 speed will be a better fit... Hopefully😅

I have a few questions because I’m about to do the same thing on my 88 yota pickup. Where did you jack the front of the truck up from and where did you put all four jack stands? How high do the stands need to be to move the transmission under the vehicle?

I jack the front from the front crossmember and I place the stands under the frame of the truck towards the cab where its flat. I used 12 ton jack stands for the height to make sure everything and myself can fit under

I would have to check but I think I removed an inch and a half from the original mount(?). There are existing 5 speed mounts that I believe are the correct size but I chose to cut mine down. Also, i would reccomend measuring your own since there could be some variation.

With the short shifter installed? Yes, less free play in the shifter and shorter throws

Truthfully, I have a soft spot for the 22r. I love how mechanical everything is and its carbonated. Also, this is my daily and I need it to stay that way. Its cheap, easy to maintain, but still fun. Plus, I need to actually finish the VQ35 swap first, otherwise I'd have two incomplete vehicles hahaha

Noticabley shorter. I don't have a before and after measurement but the throws are maybe half of what the stock shifter was. Feels super nice though when you run through the gears

I found it on eBay. The first transmission they sent me had a synchro problem and would not go into first at all. The second one they sent is better but still has issues with first. I'm going to rebuild it myself at some point but for now it's in the truck. You can buy transmission from Marlin Crawler who guarantees there work. Should have gone that direction with mine

W56 come in 4wd and 2wd orientations. I found it as a rebuilt unit on eBay from a seller in California. I believe it's from a 90 or 91 Tacoma

Did you ever fix your speedometer issue? I have the same problem where the speedometer shows less than the actual speed.

@@optik3000 unfortunately, no. There does not seem to be a fix for this which seems odd considering how mechanical the setup is. When I have some more time I'm going to take the Speedo out and see if I can physically adjust it. Right now Speedo reads 10% slower and it has to do with the larger gear on the speed sensor for the 5 speed

Thats odd. I did a w46 to w59 swap and the speed sensor gears were the same. I have the same issue with my speed not matching.

I'm wanting to change my 86 Toyota truck 4 speed to a 5 speed , I also have 87 Toyota truck with 5 speed complete truck , is this a direct swap , what do I need to know to do this , thanks , Henry

First, make sure the transmission you get is for a 2wd or 4x4 whichever preference you have. Mine was a direct swap where the bellhousing, reverse light sensor, and Speedo cable all transfer. I shortened the mount but you can find the shorter mount on the 5 speed pickups. Only thing to note is that the speed sensor have differing sizes and as a result my speedometer reads 10% slower than actual speed. Still looking for a fix for that

MiG Ren E' with the 4 speed, a combined highway and city was averaging 29.5. Im currently doing a economy run on the pickup and I'll see if there are any improvements

@@RM-fv6jj I've noticed a drop in mine since installing the 5 speed. Currently I think the lack of power is making the gaps between the gears a bit more apparent. Basically, the engine is having to work harder to make up the difference. I'm currently around mid 20s (almost entirely in city) but hoping to add some power upgrades which should help out. Also, I'm running the stock wheels which are 185s so there's not much rolling resistance.

I got a W54 5-speed in my 94 2wd pickup. I wish 5th gear was slightly taller for highway driving. It doesn't sound happy past 70 mph and even at 55, it's not great.

@@OldDatsun I'd put a different ring and pinion if I could find a speedo gear to match. I don't like guessing speed if I can help it, and taller tires would ruin the look. If a factory limited slip was found, that's every reason for me to re gear and upgrade. For now, I'll live with it.

Honestly, I havent really gotten back to it. The larger speed sensor reads 10% slower and I have just adjusted haha. I need to go back and look at other toyota dashes from other models like SR5s and see what's going on.
