Toyota Prius Front Brake Pads Replacement ! Toyota Prius 2004 - 2009 Front Brake Pads
► Our Website for Tools, Parts and more Videos: mechaniclifesty...
We took this video to show you how to remove and replace the front brake pads on a Toyota Prius Second Generation xw20. It will be the same procedure from 2004-2009. All you will need is a big flat head screwdriver that you will be using the push the piston in the caliper ( or you can buy a tool for that purpose, but not necessary) a 14 mm wrench or socket and tire tool. SOME BOOKS Suggest to unhook the battery before replacing the pads.
When you put the new brake pad BEFORE driving the car press the brake pedal 4-5 times to make sure that the new brake pads contact the disc.
It will be the same procedure for:
2004 Toyota Prius
2005 Toyota Prius
2006 Toyota Prius
2007 Toyota Prius
2008 Toyota Prius
2009 Toyota Prius

Thanks for the video, 4 things that should be mentioned here to others though, this is improtant: 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable before doing anything, priuss have automated brake actuators that will close the caliper pistons if fob key is close to the car or a button is pushed. This is a nightmare, disconnect your battery cable. 2.Calipers should be held up by a small bungee chord or large nylon zip tie, you dont want to damage the brake lines and pinch them off. 3. Brake pad carrier plates should be greased on the outside edge where the caliper piston makes contact with the plate, not good to install dry carriers against the pistons. 4. ALWAYS torque the caliper bolts and lug nuts to your cars Torque specification, a hand tighten may work for an experienced mechanic but you can easily under-tighten: caliper could seize up on rotor and hub, this is accident material - or over-tighten and brake the bolt right off in the caliper mount, that would just suck. Thanks again for the video, cheers

+Keenan Walker #5. The jack lifting point is in the center front area, it is easy to spot. Two main frame welds may be found just a bit further out, but not the side of the body, for the jacks.

K W333 good points, also add to the list to check and lubricate the pistons...might as well, you're down there and everything

Excellent points...also you should be using a torque wrench to properly tighten (and not over tightening) the caliper bolts not just tightening them down as hard as you can (a little blue locktite is always wise too). Also using some copper anti seize on the edges of the pads where they sit in the caliper to stop them chaffing.

Thank you for taking the time to post your video, very informative. The Stealership wants somewhere in the $300 range to just change my front pads, WTH???? With the Hybrid system and the weird front wheel charging system I was worried that I might mess some shit up, as opposed to other pad changes in the past. Your video clearly explained all that I needed to know. K W333, points out some good stuff here. I ain't lookin' for no nightmares; that's for damn sure. TY K W333 for your info.

You shouldn't leave the caliper hanging like that, you can damage the brake line.

True, and guys being very careful by having a wire hanger from which to suspend the caliper, like using a coat hanger cut to size and bent into S hook, can save stress on the hydraulic hose and fittings. Older brake hoses will last longer doing this. Any better ideas? Would love to learn from a mechanic not under a shade tree.

I just did this and it's really not too hard (I have ZERO car experience). The only thing that was a little tricky was compressing the caliber, you have to really crank on it or the new pads won't fit. Also, I did not disconnect the battery, but I made sure my key FOB was very far away from the car while I was working on it.

Sent the wife to Les Schwab in WA and they wanted $1,000 to do front and rear brakes. Local mechanic wants $560 with $70 additional to change brake fluid. Factory original brake pads lasted 222,000 miles which is remarkable. Prices not including tax @10% more.

My calipers need replaced the dealer wants too much money Firestone is half the cost but they said at the dealer that if I do any brake work anywhere but them I'll have no more regenerative brakes that sounds like a really big lie I'm not too sure though I did my brake pads at Firestone and they gave me the same story and my brake pads are fine so maybe it's the same thing

Most after market pads don't use multiple parts anymore. They're basically "built in". Except dealer parts. Alot of the time when I order pads from toyota it comes with the couple shims to put together with some grease to.

Pay careful attention to the way the hardware is fitted on the old brake pads. I thought I did but when I got to second wheel I found I had it wrong and had to go back and redo the other one. BTW, exactly what part of the hardware are we supposed to grease?? Thanks. LOL, I won't be back for the answer. I changed my pads at 140,000 miles. They could have gone another 60,000 probably, and further I didn't know they actually had a warning light of their own which from other comments I gather is the purpose of the little metal feeler on one of the pads?? Or does it just make noise? BTW, I bought Bosch pads on Amazon. WHY? I always use original Toyota parts, and in this case the I had to hammer and bend the hardware clip since the little notch in the pad to accomodate it was not made on the Bosch parts even though the rest of the pad matched ok. Another $1 or two would have saved a mashed finger and aggravation.
