There are pros and cons for each brand, but in my experience Subaru's simply have a far superior AWD in slippery conditions and Toyota's are more reliable on average. That being said the Forester hybrid price point is too high without meaningful gas savings. I personally own a 2018 legacy and I get 35 mpg on the highway (30 combined) and purchased it with a 10 year extended warranty because of Subaru's reputedly lower reliability. So far, very happy with my choice and price wise a new limited 4 cylinder legacy was lower in price than a fully loaded top of the line Camry. No brainer for me.

On the subaru it actually has a total of 7 usb ports apparently you didn't find the other 4. 2 are in the front center arm rest the other 2 are in the arm rest in the rear. The spare tire is located under the car with a crank to lower it AND it is a FULL SIZE tire NOT a damn donut like in the rav4. Also the hybrid forester uses the 2.5l boxer engine and does NOT offer hybrid in the 2.0 because the 2.0l is the sport turbo cold air induction motor meant for sport models like the wrx. The 2.5l motor produces 232hp and 213ft pnds torque at 4200rpm beating out the rav4 with its 209hp and 195ftpd torque AT 6500RPM. Also 0-60mph is subaru at 4.3sec. Compared to rav4's 4.8sec for 0-60mph! I love how these people also don't mention who's sponsoring the video..,in this case its Toyota and bottom line is this video is a lie!!!! The rav4 is a decent vehicle for the most part but its a shame Toyota has to lie to put their vehicle above what their competition is. The fact is Rav4 has had twice the recalls as the forester and hasn't got equal safety listing as subaru. Toyota has been chasing subaru's tail for the last 7 yrs and obviously will continue to in the forseeable future because they just cannot compete with symetrical all wheel drive!

From a pure hybrid perspective yes, the Forester make no sense given your figures, might as well go non-hybrid. With regards to steering controls you judge too quickly; I have an Outback with a similar set-up and it makes complete sense when you use it everyday (I never once had to rely on the manual from new); its even better than a rental F pace I had recently. With regards to the Rav4 it has a knees up seating position in the rear seat which immediately rules it out for me. I actually was cross shopping for SUVs not too long ago, and it included Mazdas, Toyotas, Nissans, Volvos, even Audis and I went with an Outback. Nothing could match it for comfort, front and rear, thought the CVT is a pain the ... it also feels premium which can't say for all vehicles in its segment.

Forester hybrid has the worst of most attributes of a SUV: no spare tire, higher price, no power, bad fuel economy. Subaru marketing management did a very poor job of planning it - this combo fits XV but not Forester. The second needs 2.5l engine and stronger electric motor. a Subaru Liberty wagon owner here. as Subaru no longer make wagons, except the Outback, I am looking for a similar sized car to effectively carry the same amount of gear that the Liberty does. after driving a Corolla Hybrid for a day, I came away impressed with the Toyota hybrid system. to be honest, I'd like to go the full EV route, but for the same price as either of these vehicles tested, I'd be getting something half the size, so that option is not open at this time. I was waiting for Subaru to introduce their hybrids to the market and to say I am underwhelmed would be an understatement... and no spare! in this country that should be considered a criminal act. so, at this point in time, the RAV4 GX hybrid is the front runner, if not for the hybrid system, but also more importantly, the space saver can be optioned for a full-sized spare (only available on the GX model). it also runs on 91 RON fuel (as does the Forester), which is also a plus with the difference in prices here of around 20c a litre between 91 and 95, as Euro wagons (you know, a real station wagon) tend to run on 95, again while I'd really like one (damn shame we can't get their hybrids here), the 95 RON requirement kicks them into touch as well. not quite like the tester, I'm over 190cm tall, so that leg and headroom is important.

I own the Toyota GX Hybrid for a year..., whilst fuel econ is good, I've never achieved 4.8L/100L no matter how hard I try "on a return trip". Its possible to get less than 4.8L on a one way trip because there is generally one direction of a trip which is going more downhill. However, with Premium unleaded 98 petrol, I have achieved 5.2L-5.8L/100km in a mix of heavy traffic, straight up traffic jams when travelling to work in Sydney Traffic. When driving in "Sports" mode and trying to use as much petrol as I can, e.g. accelerating off the lights very hard. Then my results are around 6.8L/100km with airconditioning on. The car doesn't do that much better in highway driving versus traffic jams. In traffic jams, you can pretty much use electric only. My worst result of 6.8L/100km does not include accelerating when i see a red light in next 100m, then to deliberately break just in time. So 6.8L/100km is just me not trying to deliberately use the battery.

Subaru Forester has way better AWD, noticeably better noise insulation, better suspension and control of the vehicle, and more advanced boxer type petrol engine. And those facts alone for lots of men means Subaru Forester is a better SUV car. That said, this new Toyota RAV4 is a very good car and will always have its own lovers.
@davidgapp14573 жыл бұрын
For a lot of men, power is important. As for the engine, I don't see how the Subaru engine is more advanced than the dual port injection, Atkinson cycle Rav4 engine - maybe you could enlighten me? The Rav4 uses eCVT which uses a planetary gear system rather than a hydraulic/metal chain system (lineartronic). As such, the eCVT is more energy efficient and is considered more reliable in the long term. As for the AWD, I expect in extreme conditions you are correct, however on snow and dirt roads, I have found the Rav4 Hybrid to be remarkably competent. It helps that the rear-axle electric motor has a decent amount of power and a lot of available torque - now if only they'd included an electronic rear-axle lock! Anyhow, unless you go rock hopping, you're unlikely to notice much difference in off-road handling. To be honest I don't own either vehicle - I bought a Rav4 Prime instead. Now that puts both the Forester and the Rav4 Hybrid in the shade. I'm averaging better than 5L/100km which includes more highway driving at 80+ mph than you would expect to see in Australia. Around town I'm getting the equivalent of around 3L/100km (based on the cost of recharging the battery at home). Indeed, except for camping excursions, I can't remember the last time I went to the gas station! But to be honest, what I really like is the power. And the torque. 0 to 100kph in under 6 seconds.

We recently drove a top trim 2021 Rav 4 Hybrid, then a top trim 2019 Forester (Hybrid not available in the US unfortunately). That said almost everything he found to be better in the Rav 4 we disagreed with. The seats were far better in the Subaru, as the Rav 4's were like sitting on a board. The ride was significantly harsher in the Rav 4, and LOUDER oh my gosh If I am paying $40k+ for a car it should not be as loud as a that Rav 4 was on the highway. There was wind noise from the mirror, road noise in the back it was just bad and that's me comparing it to my mustang convertible... Just overall I was really disappointed in the Rav 4 even more so for the money. I am a little Subaru biased having loved and owned two previously, but I was surprised when the GF said she want's to wait till there is a Hybrid SUV Subaru available rather than get a Rav 4. So all of that said, I hope they improve a little on the tech as the Rav 4 definitely wins in the MG battle at the moment and that is the main reason its still in the running. If we could get our hands on a Rav 4 Prime, we would be buying one they cant be found nearby and without huge mark ups though.

People talk about hybrids in terms of fuel economy, but the CVT sometimes cuts out under offroad conditions. Is it possible that the electric motor does the standing start in offroad conditions and hands over to the CVT at higher speeds? If that is true then the fuel economy is irrelevant and explains why the Forrester has an underwhealming battery. Alternatively, the Corolla uses an automatic first gear before handing over to the CVT, so the electric motor might just be like a first gear? I admit I know nothing and I’m probably wrong. I own a 2018 XV with CVT which cut out once when offroad, not sure why except to protect it, I would like to replicate the condition to determine if driver technique can overcome this condition.

It’s really an incomplete review without mentioning that virtually all 2019 and 2020 RAV4 Hybrid models, which claim to have a 14.5 gallon gas tank, have a serious design flaw which shorts the tank at least 1-2 gallons. In some serious cases, such as my 2019 model, only 3-5 gallons can go in at a fill up. And it does NOT get 40 mpg - Mine claims that, but has never gotten better than 26, and Toyota’s response to that is it is operating “normally.” Since I have a 200-275 mile commute each day, that means I have to fill up the tank at least once or twice a day. Toyota has known about the problem for at least 8 months, yet is still selling the vehicles without disclosing this flaw. There is still no fix and none on the horizon. In meantime, if you request a buyback as I did, with my new vehicle now in the shop unfixable for 6 continuous months, Toyota will inform you that no fix or buyback is available. Buyer beware. In my case, I’ve had to hire a lawyer and file suit. I’ve bought three Toyotas in the last 30 years - they’ve lost a lifelong customer.

I'm not sure if in Australia we get a different fuel tank or our petrol station pump nozzles are different but I have no problem filling my 2019 RAV4 in Australia,

Tom de Jongh Glad to hear it. In U.S. there are multiple class action lawsuits regarding it.

No problem filling my 2020 model here in Brisbane. Fuel pointer showed way past full when finished.

I am averaging 5.5 litres per 100kms at the moment which is 42.7 mpg

I've heard that if you slightly pull out the nozzle and slowly add the remaining gas, it will fill the tank up to full! Takes a little longer but it apparently works.

The Rav4 doesn’t have a CVT transmission. It has an eCVT transmission, which works completely differently than a CVT.

Subaru seems over overengineered. As far as the cabin goes, this style was the thing 10 years ago, but not anymore.

both great, reliable vehicles, but Toyota out shines with the hybrids........2 cents

This hybrid Forester uses more fuel per 100km than the non-hybrid, as tested by you guys (non hybrid 7.4L, this hybrid 7.8L). Probably because it's not only heavier, but because the hybrid is so small, relies on the smaller base motor more and has to thrash more to get going. Combined with the lack of spare tyre and the fact you have to pay more for the lower fuel consumption (not to mention the long term costs you might get from batteries down the line), you'd be an idiot to buy one. It's all negative with no positive. It basically has zero appeal to anyone.

Not to mention that the regular fuel consumption of a non hybrid Rav4 is about the same than the hybrid Forester, and if keeping the planet safe is a concern, the CO2 emissions in the regular Rav4 are also lower than the forester.

The Toyota has one hudge drawback it is not built for full size people. I am 6 3 and cannot drive the Toyota because there is not nearly enough head room for me to sit up. So if you are a full size person there is no choice you have to go with the forester.

Hmm...we just ordered one and my husband is 6 foot...the guy in the video must be really short because he's got a lot of head room! lol

Subaru is having a lend of us surely? 12.3 kW isn't going to do anything worth talking about either for power or for regen ... hence the poor fuel consumption

I'd just wait for the next Forrester. The interior of the RAV-4 is amazing but that exterior has, "kid" written all over it. No thanks.

Forester panel has that "I'll blind 'em with science" look. Looks a tad 'dorky' . RAV4 has that 'gravitas' to impress mums (& dads) esp at sport and schools. The real truth is that while I like Subeys, Toyo's mojo has been revived (of late). [Melb Aussie]

Can see no reason to buy either car based upon so called electric capabilities. Forrester no spare tyre (a must for Australia) and RAV4 (space saver spare). Neither of these cars would be capable of taking off-road with those specifications.
