This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Toyota RAV4 VS the Subaru Forester. The Subaru Forester is longer and taller than the Toyota RAV4 offering 2 inches more front legroom, over an inch more front headroom and 1.6 inches more rear legroom. The Subaru wins in overall cargo capacity offering 6.3 cubic feet more space. However, the RAV4 has 6.1 cubic feet more cargo space behind the second row seat. The RAV 4 gas model has more power than the Forester. They both have a 2.5L 4-cylinder, the Toyota with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The Forester is matched with a CVT with 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque The “best value” trim; it has orange accents throughout the interior with textured cloth seats and orange stitching. It has an 8” touchscreen, 6.5” is standard, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a heated steering wheel (US top trims), heated front seats, a power drivers seat, manual for the passenger and reclining second row seats. In the US, the 6.5” touchscreen is standard on the Sport trim. The RAV4 comes with similar standard features as the Forester, our test model is the XLE trim which I consider to be the “best value” trim. It comes with a 7” touchscreen, heated leather wrapped steering wheel, heated fabric seats, an 8 way power adjustable drivers seat and a manual passenger seat. The RAV4 does not offer power passenger seats on any trims JD Power gives the 2021 RAV4 a quality and reliability score of 74/100 and the Forester 81/100. CarEdge states the RAV4 will retain 64% of its value after 5 years and the Forester 59%. The Toyota and Subaru are very close in fuel economy. RAV4 8.4L/100km, 28 MPG combined and Forester 8.2L/100km, 29 MPG combined.The RAV 4 comes with three powertrains, gas, hybrid and a PHEV, we are focusing on the gas model in our comparison. It has more power than the Subaru with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it has 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torqueThe Forester comes with one engine, a 2.5L 4-cylinder with a CVT, it has 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque.The Forester shines off-road or in more challenging winter driving conditions with 220 mm of ground clearance and an x-mode driving setting which includes, trail capability and hill descent. It offers a smooth and comfortable ride, the steering, handling and braking is very good. The cabin noise increases when accelerating quickly but once up to speed it offers a quieter cabin. The Subaru is longer than the Toyota offering 2 inches more front legroom and an inch and half more headroom. Getting in and out of the Forester is easy with its large door openings especially for families still using car seats. The Sport model you see here which we picked as our best value trim has orange accents throughout the interior with textured cloth seats and orange stitching. All trims but the base and sport models, get silver stitching and finish. The Sport trim comes with an 8” touchscreen, 6.5” is standard, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, a power drivers seat, manual for the passenger and reclining second row seats. The top two trims will get you driver seat memory, an 8-way power passenger seat, a Harman Kardon 9 speaker sound system, leather seats and heated rear seats. The RAV4 comes with similar standard features as the Forester, our test model is the XLE trim which we consider to be the best value trim. It comes with a 7” touchscreen, heated leather wrapped steering wheel, heated fabric seats, an 8 way power adjustable drivers seat and a manual passenger seat. The RAV4 does not offer power passenger seats on any trims . The top two trims come standard with an 8” touchscreen, ventilated front seats, softex seats and wireless charging. Only on the top trim will you find heated rear seats and driver seat memory.

I own both the cars and Rav4's cabin noise and suspension leaves a lot to be desired when compared to Forester. Once you drive Subaru for some time Rav4's ride is uncomfortable and noisy especially on the country roads or highways. Also, Forester overall fit and finish is more premium.

I've been a Toyota fan and I've tried both. I tried the RAV4 first and then the Subaru Forester and I admit there's a big difference on the comfort, the smoothness, the quietness of the ride. I would definitely choose the Subaru.

I've been a Toyota person for a long time. From Camry to Avalon to 4-Runner. And I liked them all. Very reliable and low cost when it came to repairs and maintenance. You really can't go wrong with a Toyota. But when it came time to go with an AWD vehicle of this size, I had to go with Subaru. I liked the interior a lot more. And being just shy of 6'4, the RAV just felt too limited for my height. Not only did the Subaru feel more open and airy because of all of its windows and nice-sized moonroof, but the backseat knee space felt just as good as the front seat. In fact, putting the driver seat all the way back for a comfortable driving position that suited me very well, it still left good knee room in the backseat behind the driver's seat when I jumped back there. I was pretty impressed. Nice video comparison!

I sell Toyotas and own a Forester Sport. It’s honestly no comparison for the money the Forester is better in every way. Even the maxed out Rav4 has a poor quality backup camera and the JBL audio is not as nice as the Harmon Kardon. Save your money and get the Forester.

My brother and I went to try both. One thing you didn't mention, at least not directly, is that you feel more cramped in the Rav4 compared to the Forester in the driving position, at least, that's the feeling I got. In the Forester, I felt like I had a lot of room, did not feel cramped at all. Quite the opposite in the Rav4, just felt like I was boxed in with not much space ! (Yes, I played with the seat position in both, before you make a comment about that !). Oh, and that engine noise in the Rav4 ! You have the impression you're driving a 1992 Toyota Echo.... just not acceptable in this price range and class of vehicle ! Although I don't like CVT's all that much, would definitely choose the Forester over the Rav4 (in it's current iteration) any day !
@breaker1685
@breaker1685 2 жыл бұрын
Agree, the reason the RAV4 feels cramped is that even though its got a wide wheel base, the cabin is still shorter for width. The road noise is below par for the money. but the hybrid fuel economy is something else combined with the extra low down torque

I’m glad that you include the USA in your comments. We love our (my wife’s 19 Outback). When our (my) 11 Rav 4WD 3.5 V6 Limited wears out, we plan on replacing it with the Subaru Forrester Limited. The AWD in the Subie is far superior over my Rav. Yes the Subaru’s are, in my opinion, very slow. Painfully slow actually. I’ve considered another Rav, but being able to see out, especially in the rear (C pillar) is awful. The Rav also fails when it comes to their AWD system. I’ve been driving Toyota’s for almost 40 years, but the Subaru is a much better vehicle over the Toyota. Thanks again for your videos. I watch them often.

Having recently driven the RAV4 for a weekend. It truly is a spectacular CUV... for the average non-car/CUV loving family. It does nothing wrong. Maybe ... a little noisy and is a bit floaty boaty for my liking. But it does nothing really well. You’d never find it in a Costco/Walmart parking lot... because its far to boring, common and generic looking. So I would strongly recommend it if all you want is Toyota’s legendary build quality.... just be prepared to give up a little of your Soul. Great cross referencing information (Andrea) and observations. Thanks for the video. (note: I’ve only driven the past two generations of Foresters (a friend’s and my Dad’s XT-Turbo)).

After researching,I believe the Forester is best in class. Also,the premium trim is the best bang for the buck. The touring is over priced. The limited cost almost the same,as the touring. The sport has the larger wheels and if has a rougher ride. The premium had jyst enough available options at a decent price. The base does not give you enough for your buck. We chose the premium with the 15 package. I may add, ours is a 2020. We also own a 2018 Impreza. We live this little hatchb back. The only item that we have with it. Is it is gutless. It would be a much nicer car if we had the option of a 2.5 over the 2.0.

The Premium is often noted as the most bang for your buck Subaru. But I suppose it depends on what one is looking for as well. The Touring might be overpriced if someone is not looking for the extra amenities it has on it, including leather seating. But that's how it usually works. The more you add on, the more costly the car is. And the Touring does have quite a bit more than the Premium. I agree though that the Premium seems to be a popular choice.

I (we) currently own a 11 Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6 with 269 hp. It’s quicker than the Subaru Outback turbo and gets more mpg. We needed to replace our 04 Camry and having a 4WD or an AWD is necessary for our 5-6 feet of snow every winter. We looked at a new Rav and we’re Very UNIMPRESSED with it. We couldn’t find a Forester anywhere to test drive, so ultimately we chose the Outback. We don’t need studded tires on our Outback but we do on the Rav. If Subaru offers a non plug-in hybrid on their Forester when it’s time to replace our Rav, my next car will be the Forester Touring. It’s truly a shame that I have to buy the Touring model just so I can get a car without Depressing Grey or Death Black interior. Our Outback has Ivory interior. If we couldn’t find one with the ivory or brown interior, we would have bought a car that did.

I love both brands. My family are all mechanics, and we do our own servicing and maintenance. I prefer Subaru for a better quality ride, especially in the snow. I come from a Toyota family. My folks have always driven and owned Toyota & Lexus products. When it was my turn to pick a SUV for my family, I test drove both, and was taken back by the lack of refinement and quality of the Toyota. I picked the Subaru Forester with no conflict whatsoever in my mind. Comparing the Sport and XLE variants, the Forester is better equipped mechanically, refinement levels are superior and the interior is a leaps better than the RAV4. Between these two, I'd recommend the Forester any day!

Great comparison guys! If I could make a hybrid of the RAV4 with the Forester chassis, that would be the car I'd go for. Since such a car doesn't exist, then it'd have to be the RAV4; it's more reliable (regardless of the JD Power nonsense), much better looking (the Forester has a hearse-like aesthetic to its looks that I don't care for), has markedly better running costs, especially maintenance (which is surprisingly high on Subarus) and it doesn't have a CVT. There's a reason why the RAV4 is the best selling vehicle in NA.

Apparently the sales numbers don't support me, but IMO, Subaru whiffed when they dropped the XT. I have a '14 XT Premium. With 250 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, there isn't a lot of drama from the CVT when you need some push. It also came with 3 modes for the CVT, and they actually do make a difference. The XT added larger wheels, tires, and brakes, and a firmer suspension. I drove the pedestrian 2.5L on a test drive and compared to the XT, it felt like it cornered on the door handles. In spite of the firmer cornering, the ride is fine. 110K miles and 9.5 years in, and it's been bullet proof. Unfortunately, the orange accents on the new "Sport" trim level don't add any HP. The simple controls of the old and I presume new Forester are great. Three big knobs for HVAC (mode, fan speed, temp) and has detents all around so you know when you've hit the next "click". Easy to do without taking eyes off the road and a far cry better from the touchscreen nonsense. Am I the only one who finds it ironic that one can get ticketed for looking at your cell phone when driving, but navigating all those menus embedded on your 8" touchscreen in the center of your dash, is fine? No wonder we need auto braking and lane assist. Good comparison test though. I learned a lot about the RAV4. I like the drivetrain options, but don't like the "origami on steroids" styling. I don't think it will age all that well. Right now, I'm in "wait and see" mode, as nothing out there is really leaping out as something I really like.
