On August 28, 2009, Mark Saylor and his family were killed in a horrific car crash. The culprit? A stuck gas pedal.
Shortly after, hundreds of others reported similar incidents. Everyone blamed Toyota, and the company ended up recalling 10 million vehicles in just two years. They paid a $1.2 billion fine to the US government and spent another $1.1 billion on a class-action lawsuit.
But what actually went wrong in Mark Saylor's crash? And was Toyota really to blame for all of these mysterious accelerations?

Me and my friends were in a similar situation about an year ago. It was late at night and we were drunk the guy driving was pretty sober but we were hyped so we were speeding like crazy. All of a sudden we went over a bump and our car lost its brakes. We were going 90-110 kmph on a narrow dark road. We freaked out and decided that the only logical thing to do is to slide the car on the divider so it stops by friction. We did that and left unharmed. The most important thing in situations like these is to keep calm and think

@@KuzkayDev There are several positions for an ignition key, and some newer cars have different means to shut off the engine. With a normal ignition, you can shut the engine off without locking the steering wheel... I just did it recently when and engine blew going up a mountain pass. I turned it off when the oil pressure dropped, and coasted it off the side of the road. Yes, putting it in neutral would have worked though.... if the car had a type of gear shift to do so. Some options in that situation are: 1) Shift into neutral 2) Shift into lower gears, If it doesn't start at low speed this may not be possible. 3) Last resort would be too turn off the ignition but you risk losing power brakes/steering and if you turn the key back too far the wheel lock may engage and you may lose all steering ability. Given it sounds like his brakes may have failed, I myself would have shifted into neutral and pulled off the side of the road as safely as possible then turned the key off just enough too shut down the engine so it didn't blow then possibly down shift the transmission manually gear by gear too the lowest gear allowing it too engage if it can until it's slow enough I can safely use the emergency brake too stop the vehicle. This isn't advice by any means just what I would do, Because I have had too do it previously due too a bolt or socket getting stuck in the intake.

The big lesson here is the old proverb " what you fear shall come upon you ". Immediately spirit of fear came over everyone in the car and they automatically made the assumption that they were all going to crash, it's called Target fixation and they could not get their Thinking Out of the Box. All the driver had to do, or even the passenger, was to turn the ignition key off. I'm still astonished at all these hundreds of comments pouring in that 99% of them are not thinking about this. I think it needs to be a part of public education so it's ingrained in people's minds that if anything like this happens, turn the damn key off, with all due respect

In regards to the brake override system. The brake override system, also known as Brake-Override System (BOS) or Brake Pedal Override System (BPO), is designed to prioritize the brake command over the accelerator in situations where both pedals are pressed simultaneously. Its purpose is to enhance safety by allowing drivers to bring the vehicle to a stop in case of unintended acceleration. Technically, the brake override system typically involves sensors and electronic control units (ECUs) that monitor input from the brake and accelerator pedals. When the system detects simultaneous inputs, it prioritizes the brake signal, cutting engine power and allowing the vehicle to be brought to a stop safely. However, in the case of the Toyota recall incidents, a malfunction occurred in some instances where pumping the brake pedal during unintended acceleration led to a loss of power brake hydraulic support. This means that the brake pedal became less effective in stopping the vehicle, potentially complicating the driver's ability to bring the car to a halt. The exact technical intricacies and the root cause of the malfunction can be complex and might involve issues with the electronic control systems, sensor calibration, or other factors that led to unintended consequences in certain scenarios. Investigations and improvements were made by Toyota and other automotive manufacturers to address these issues and enhance the reliability of brake override systems. Asked gpt to brake it down 🎉

Quick tip. I might save somebody's life in the future is letting people know that in an automatic vehicle and a manual vehicle you can force shift the vehicle from drive to neutral without having to step on the brakes, disengaging the transmission. Some people argue that it might destroy the transmission, which isn't true in the majority of cases for vehicles. However, even if it destroyed the transmission 100% of the time, I think that's worth your life and others. Again, when you were driving you can shift into neutral without having to step on the brakes disengaging the transmission.

Imagine having this happen; you are suddenly terrified, everyone is screaming and you have like 20 seconds to be forced to choose to throw away the lives of ~all of your family/self & everyone you hit at the intersection~, or ~just your family/self~. God, what an absolute legend to have been able to even make that choice. RIP Mark and Family
@keithgood7181
@keithgood7181 Жыл бұрын
Well IF that was your only 2 choices it would be easy. He probably figured if he slams into cars in the intersection him and his passengers are going to die anyway! SO.. why take others with you! Plus you probably have a better chance of surviving going off the road cuz you're not slamming into a bunch of cars or trucks! NOW... that said, there's no reason they should've crashed in the first place when there were two or three other options that he had to stop the car without incident! Like put the car in neutral and use the emergency brake to stop! Or turn off the car then use the emergency brake! Or put it in neutral, the wind resistance is surprisingly stronger than you think! It will slow the car fairly quick, then use the emergency brake if the regular brakes don't work. If neither brakes work, after the wind resistance has slowed the car he could've got behind one of those big trucks that he passed and hit the back of it. Since they're both moving it wouldn't be much of an impact at all. And the driver if the truck would've most likely instinctively hit the brakes slowing both of them to a stop! There's even a couple more options but this text is long enough! But realistically, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO IN SITUATIONS LIKE THAT'S IS.. "DO NOT PANIC!!!" Which I'm sorry to say it sounded like they were all panicking! I just pray that they were all believers in Jesus Christ!!!

It happened to me, when I was just a kid. I didn’t even have my license yet. My step mom let me drive the car down the street to the neighbors house, who was thinking about buying the car. On the way back home, the accelerator stuck, and I just took off going 80+ through my suburban neighborhood. I pulled the E-brake, and a bunch of smoke kicked up. It was slowing down but not stopping. I put it in neutral, and the engine revved but started to finally slow down with the E brake on and my brake pedal to the floor. One of the most horrifying experiences I’ve ever been through. My dad was just impressed with me. Idk why I thought to put it in neutral, nobody taught me to do that. If it happened to me today as an adult 15 years later, idk if I would think to put it in neutral but I did that day.

This happened to me in a Toyota Corolla in 2003. I don't know what initiated it, but the gas was suddenly on full, and I couldn't reduce it. I pumped the gas a few times, and it wouldn't come up off the floor. I switched it to neutral, and it reved so high I thought the engine would blow, so I turned off the car to cut the engine and rode the break. I don't remember if it had power breaks or not - it wasn't a high end model, and it was at least 10 years old. I limped it into town by turning the car on in neutral and putting it into drive before the engine could rev too high, let it accelerate me, then coast in neutral with the engine off. I did that over and over until I got to the dealership in town, and they fixed it for free. They said that the cruise control got stuck. It was freaky, and it was lucky it first happened when I was on a country road, and I had a few seconds to try things, rather than in heavy traffic. It was pretty scary when it first happened, and you really do need a few seconds to figure something out. And there could be a lot of reasons it happens, and my solution might not work in all of them.

For those wondering why you would lose power assist brakes at full throttle. The majority of power assist brake systems use vacuum from the engine. At cruise and light throttle you have vacuum that is stored in the booster, but once they used their brakes and use all the vacuum in the booster and now that’s it’s at full throttle there is no vacuum anymore. This does not happen with vehicles equipped with hydro boost or electronic hydro boost systems that use power steering fluid pressure to assist the brakes

@@ShamrockUSA kind of correct, but you didn’t get to the essence. The condition is high rpm no throttle(such as blipping the throttle and let go quickly). At 120mph I got on the brakes as hard as I could and switched the ignition off and was able to stop. But yeah I feel bad for the dispatcher, it must be hard to cope, i once heard story about dispatcher don't sleep for a week because of robbery gone wrong and whole family got killed and he heard what's going on, just can't wipe that out of your mind, dude got to bar and got shtfaced every night for a week until his boss convinced him to see therapist.

I don't understand why they didn't do the same. First you try to have a responsive accelerator pedal, then to slow down with break or by downing the gear ratio if it is not an automatic. Then like you, pulling the neutral position to disengage the motor from the pedal action and trying to brake again slowly with the pedal or the hand brake (slowly too) to decelerate without losing control. Why they didn't pull neutral position, even if the driver was panicking there were 3 other people in the car to reason him and it is not like they didn't have time to react since they had time to call 911 in the first place.

Just to clear up something that a lot of people have brought up: 1. Why couldn’t he push the clutch in? 2. Why couldn’t he shift into neutral/park/reverse? 3. Why couldn’t he turn the engine off? 1. The car he was driving was a Lexus ES350 which only came in automatic(if I’m not wrong)so there was no clutch pedal. 2. The drive selector lever in most automatics doesn’t physically change the gears. It has to go through a computer which then makes the change. So the computer may have prevented him from shifting into neutral when the engine was revving at such high rpm to prevent him from damaging the transmission(because some idiots[presumably 18 year old kids trying to drag race with their mum’s ‘08 Corolla] damaged their automatic transmissions before by suddenly shifting from neutral to drive to ‘launch’ their car). 3. You had to hold down the engine start/stop button for 3 seconds to stop the engine to prevent someone accidentally/mischievously pressing the button and damaging the entire car. According to a NHTSA report, they put drivers in a similar situation and some tried to turn off the engine but did not know they had to hold it for 3 seconds. This was a rental and mark would not have known this.

Then one day I took the drivers side Weathertech floormat out for cleaning and when I replaced it, the front of the mat was on top of the gas pedal. Next time I drove it, the gas pedal stayed down after I took my foot off the gas. But the brakes worked fine, luckily. Lesson learned.

I remember this, the “not hitting brakes” weren’t the issue. There were 911 calls that were released where the brakes were worn out by the people driving and emergency dispatchers telling them to hit their emergency brakes, which didn’t do much good either.
