Toyota has revealed plans to build a prototype "city" of the future on a 175-acre site at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Called the Woven City, it will be a fully connected ecosystem powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
Envisioned as a "living laboratory," the Woven City will serve as a home to full-time residents and researchers who will be able to test and develop technologies such as autonomy, robotics, personal mobility, smart homes and artificial intelligence in a real-world environment.

Would be great if artists and free thinkers would be invited to think along. Otherwise it might end up as a lab to test on the inhabitants 😅 and we’ll have a new issue of sumashishi, the counterpart of karoshi. Wishing for the best of course. Keep in mind you always need critical thinkers on your way to this great place.

It would work in America but only if it's a gated community, otherwise crime would be a major problem. Japan has a monolithic population demographic and culture. America has many opposing cultures and demographics.

The complexities in designing, building, maintaining and managing buildings and cities are enormous. I believe that only Data / Software / AI and all things technology can assist us in making the daily and future existence of cities a possible and pleasant experience. Well Done Toyota and Woven City!

Yes Yes and Yes, THIS is what the humanity should work for! THIS is ladies and gentlemen a economically and environmentally healthy and balanced city! A few years ago I started thinking about popularising this kind of structure. 99% of our cities are build for the economy and not for people. This is one of the big factors of inequality. Make cities suitable for people! The results will cause less suicide, less depression and a better life.

BIG should look at the NEXT21 project in Osaka as an example to learn from: A superstructure with totally adaptable, energy efficient independent dwelling units. The project, since initial construction, has constantly been a site for experimentation in hydrogen fuel cell equipment, green roofs, varying life-styles, all with different architects involved over time...it is a perfect example of the OPEN BUILDING approach, which Toyota ought to be using!

Just to everyone looking at this going “far-fetched”. Just remember that everyone thought that it was far fetched that we would fly. Yes the design that Toyota has shown off here requires a large amount of money (Curves in construction mean added cost and this cannot feasibily be scaled to existing cities), but that doesn’t mean you dismiss an idea just because it has a flaw. Instead try to refine it and push it forward :)

That's the spirit of innovation! Build off of new perspectives and experiences to create something of value. Rather than saying "this won't work" I like to be open to experiences. When a big corporation announces something this astounding, of course they want to hear feedback. That way, this idea can be built upon and become something truly valuable.

This idea looks beautiful. But there's a big thing missing. In order for all this to be kept green, the city needs grazing animals to help fertilize it and continually regenerate the soil. It can basically be a farm woven with the city providing nutritious food while at the same time sharing the life and keeping the greens green. Water is another question too.

A lot of people wait for flying cars I say...let’s leave cars on ground 😊 and drones and airplanes for much “larger” travels and drones maybe for like “delivery” Cars are just meant to be on ground. I feel like people want to put everything to float but Imean there’s no necessity....I love the idea of having more futuristic features on a car more so than a flying one. This looks beautiful.

Although I do love the concept, I actually expected to see a CITY, and not what seems like a vacation resort. EPCOT alone is bigger than this, about 300 acres; yet they called it "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow". Not City... FYI!!! I am not hating, I love it! I guess I was expecting to see something else. ;-)

Japan was 100% sustainable green culture during Edo. I know it - and live it in the present as a natural farmer - in our kominka farmhouse in Fukuoka Prefecture. This Woven city just looks like a condominium development!. Eco cities actually don't need transport as you don't need to go anywhere - as that is the idea!!. My daily fuel to cook on is fallen branches. No fuel cells required!. Just walk with a basket every morning.

Let’s us look backwards at our history.... the history of so many nations of the world. We have so many inspirational sustainable ideas to take away from our history which are truly sustainable. 1. Adobe for building material - In Iran olden adobe buildings still exist 2. Wind catchers- Helps avoid so much damage to our environment due to existing cooling systems 3. Plastic- look back towards the time when plastic never existed but still humanity was thriving. This would enable us to do away with plastics. It can be a never ending list to get inspired.
