I know on the Tacoma they say to do the filter mod. You basically replace the stock foam filter and replace it with an aftermarket filter. The stock foam filter is known to break off and have the pieces sucked into the pump or the valve.

@Toyota Maintenance. Thank you Professor Peter for today's lesson on what went wrong with that Toyota secondary air injection valve. My question is whether the problem that caused the one port of the air injection valve was also fixed on that Tundra? If the source is still running too rich or leaking raw gas, won't the new secondary air injection valve suffer the same fate in the future? Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

I wonder if that truck had a "hot tune"? If the exhaust gas temperatures get really high, I could see how it could cause a melt down in those vales.
@ne2i3 жыл бұрын
I think the rubber was swollen because fuel gasses were introduced on that one bank and the rubber was not designed to be exposed to it.
@billsimpson6043 жыл бұрын
It looks like gasoline vapor or oil vapor backed up into the valve and caused the rubber to swell, preventing the valve from sealing. What caused that is the great question? Crazy as it sounds, it might be possible to sand down the rubber gasket to allow the reed valve to shut enough for it to mostly work. You might be able to replace the distorted round gasket with a piece of gasket material, or a piece of rubber tire inner tube held on with some JB Weld epoxy. An O ring of the appropriate thickness might also work. Although even shriveled up as it is, the little round gasket might still work well enough for it to get rid of the trouble code, once the reed valve sealing is fixed. It would be an interesting experiment, on your own vehicle, of course. First, the solenoids need to work, or it is junk, except for the screws.

Do they make rebuild kits? My 1988 S10 four cylinder I clean the EGR valve and it worked fine because the diaphragm was not broken.
@boilednuts3 жыл бұрын
No rebuilt kit for these? Seems simple enough.
@Lunas25253 жыл бұрын
Rebuilding them isnt the issue the issue is getting to them. The other issue is they get water in them and rust takes over. On the 5.7L the air pumps are down by wheel well they get water in them and send it through the system and rust ruins the valves and pumps. Each of those valves are only sold as a unit so 110 for cheap non oem parts for a system that adds extra air for 15 seconds to the exhaust so the fuel can keep burning down the exhaust to heat up your catalytics faster to meet a arbitrary EPA limit. This system is purely an emissions system...

@@Lunas2525 Thanks for the info 👍
@The_Savage_Wombat Жыл бұрын
@@Lunas2525 I think you can just remove the valves and solenoids and replace them from disassembling the new part. This is probably a lot easier than removing the entire thing and switching it out. The lower half is just a manifold with no moving parts.

Would you recommend an air oil separator or an oil catch can for the crankcase breather?
@tacocin3 жыл бұрын
Catch cans work. However, carbon build up on anything is caused by hot oil vapors. That said, the newest oil specification IILSAC GF-6 or API SP has additives that virtually eliminates hot oil vapors. This oil was engineered specifically for GDI engines that have trouble fouling intake valves. Multiple empirical tests shows that it works. It is available in a number of different weight viscosities and negates the need for a catch can.

These valves are on top of each valve cover on the 4.7 in lieu of the starter motor. On the 5.7 liter engine these valves are buried under the intake and starter relocated under the right exhaust manifold. Both are excellent engines though...

Peter, How Much Did That valve Cost?
@Smellslikenarvasa3 жыл бұрын
I can't believe it's that simple. Yet, Toyota charges almost $500 for each component, for a $3,000 service to replace both valves and both pumps. Luckily, on my 2009 Sequoia 4.7, the first time they went bad, they were covered under warranty. Not so lucky the second time around. Do they offer new reed valve plates? Could one clean the housing and just replace the plates? I was excited to see this video! Thank you for posting it. I see you have the P2443 code video from a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to watch it now. :-)

This whole air pump-/secondary air injection valve business has been the absolute bane of my life for several YEARS. My Tundra has needed these replaced- get this- THREE TIMES!! Some kind of shameful record for Toyota. I literally work to pay for my truck, and use the truck to work. I lost track of how many thousands I have paid, and paid and paid. Right now it needs it AGAIN, and I just drive the thing in limp mode and don't have the bottomless bank account to pay for what has been the worst truck problems I have ever had. It won't pass inspection so for now while I continue to work to pay for the truck, it's un-inspected.

@@mjgh2002 The water in those pumps eventually corrode the next thing down the line which are the switching valves. The codes for both failures show up. (here is the video he mentioned which shows that not just the pumps, but the valves go bad. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHjSpYWhqaqja8U The bypass kits are not legal for passing inspection but I almost went with it. I am not a vehicle code expert at all and suspected that I would have to pay some shady mechanic to get rid of the codes and install it. In the end frame rust (another big issue for Tundras) was a part in scrapping the vehicle. I live in the New York State where bad winters and salt affect the frames. Toyota had a class action lawsuit against them and the courts ordered them to replace the ENTIRE FRAME if too rusty. I'm past their deadline. Their frames are open on the side like a C-shape and collect mud and water like a gutter with no drain holes (a terrible design) making them really rust out. In fact the gas tank straps were also corroded badly too. I now have a used Silverado as I mentioned.
