Thanks again Jim, you have provided more insight then anyone I have talked to about this for the last month +. My mechanic recommended I not start throwing money at my engine because I didn't know the exact problem yet. It is definitely humidity related. I'll pull up some schematics of my engine and check the plug ins tonight. Thanks Again.

Now that is what I call an EXCELLENT video. There's nothing like experience and I'd bet you've done this job more times than you care to remember! This is nice and clear all the way through, pays attention to important detail, and educational and enjoyable even for someone like me who has very limited mechanical knowledge. What's more it concerns possibly saving hundreds on unnecessary repairs with a little careful work of your own which has a real feelgood factor Well done, Jim :)

Great video! This (replacing the plunger and 2 contacts for $12) worked exactly as in the video for my 1999 Chev Prizm. The most difficult part was figuring out how to get to the top starter bolt - at first I could not even figure out how to see that bolt to get to it ... but I discovered by moving a work light around to a specific spot to the right and towards the cowl I could actually finally see the bolt ... this made it much easier to navigate the 14 mm socket to get on it (with long extension). Worked great - saved me a few hundred dollars - thanks!

This video was perfectly accurate! Thanks Jim. I used the Toyota OEM Part Numbers 28226-74070 and 28226-64370 for our 1998 Camry V6. They were $32 total and it took me less than an hour total to fix. Cleaning the plunger contacts with emery or sandpaper is the one tip that I HIGHLY recommend doing as Jim had instructed. Without doing this the repair is basically useless. Our car is starting like it is brand new and it has 178,000 miles on it!

Excellent video, Jim! Thank-you! And, it is so refreshing to watch a video that is done by a professional without profanity! As for my 1995 Geo Prizm, 1.8, it is kissing 305,000 carefree miles of which I put on 225,000 miles myself. After multiple turns of the key, it finally starts. It started out with 2-3 turns and now is about 20-30 turns, so I think it is time to do some repairs. Glad to find your video and thanks again for your "pay-it-forward" video!

An older thread BUT TIMELESS INFORMATION! I just did my 1994 Celica GTS 2.2 and it started first time after clicking for 2 days. Jim, I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge & making this video. I followed the procedure and it fixed my starter problem. I did not remove the starter from the engine. I unbolted a support beam between the lower engine & the intake manifold. That gave me enough room to access the back of the starter solenoid & unbolt the cover & removed the round piece. I cleaned all the contacts & put the cover back on. I only need to fix this so that I can sell it.

Great video - saved me several hundred $. Don't know if it's my imagination, but the starter now actually seems quieter than before. Got the parts for a 99 Camry XLE from NAPA for $20. The only hard part was getting the rear starter bolt undone with my walmart wrench set - there was an annoying bent metal cable support in the way that I had to bend sideways by pushing and hammering it... threw it away afterwards. I sanded down the plunger contacts with a rotary tool, which got them nice and shiney again.

If it is just "clicking" it sounds like a starter motor problem as described in this video. Rain can't really get onto the distributor cap when the car is parked, nor many of the engine components. If this problem relates to "after it has been driven in the rain" then yes, it can be these problems you mention. But if it will start after when dry and after being parked when dry but will not start after rain, then it sounds more like a humidity related problem.

Hi Earl, (thanks, if you see this, Tom T in So. Calif)... Today on my '99 Toy Tacoma 6cyl, when I got a click-click (auto parts dlvry driver)...1st, I jump out and look at battery. Then a parts guys walks by/says, "Put truck in 2nd gear, rock it a bit". Did that and voila, truck started! Did that one other time during morning routes. Rest-o-day, was fine. Sooo, I reckon it's probably either worn starter gear (or flywheel teeth?) goin' out... If you have a take on this, wait your news :):):)
@earltuckian12 жыл бұрын
when you look at the schematics, you will find the distributor and ignitor wiring in that area. There are plug-ins for these components. For example wires coming out of the side/bottom of the distributor. This is a VERY unusual problem as properly maintained Corollas typically run forever with very few problems. My bet is that you'll find something that is very simple to repair that is causing this.

Possible that it would be corrosion on the battery terminals but usually this is the first thing people correct before they look at the starter. As my video text explains, these contacts are the problem in 90% of the applications.

Typically a hard starting problem that is related to heat is caused by the armature dragging on the inner case. This is because the internal parts expand when hot. This is often because of bad bearings on the end(s) of the armature. When the bearings go bad, this "play" allows these internal parts to come in contact with each other when they are hot. Typically replacing the bearings will solve this problem but disassembling the armature of the motor is more complicated. Thank you for watching.

Just wanted to say THANKYOU! When I tested it out of the vehicle the solenoid engaged. I thought it was good. Then I saw your video. So I did the work and now the starter cranks really strong. Not sure why it worked, other then a voltage drop thru the contacts that affected the starter motor itself? I will have to replace the contacts later as the ones in it are pretty rough. I assume I can get the round contact on the pin as an assembly. Anyhow, thanks again, big time!
@obfuscated30906 жыл бұрын
Denso OSGR starters are also used on Evo and later Harley Sportsters and big twins. If your contact studs/nuts are hopelessly stuck the easy way to remove them is using an abrasive cutoff wheel. Don't beat on the nuts with a chisel or screwdriver as you can crack the starter housing.

Hi Jim...I don't like that 'throw away and buy new' neither, that's why I try to fix it. I took the starter apart and cleaned all the contacts with sandpaper incl. the plunger...the contacts actually didn't look too bad. Put everything back together but still get the clicking only...takes 10 or more try's before it eventually starts. What else could be the problem. I have a 99 corolla and it's hard to get that thing in and out...had to remove the oil filter to pull it. Good video though!

Hi Tom, I would still look at the starter first. Primarily as it is the easiest thing to check first. At the point these begin to fail, any slight tapping on the starter body often will restore function for a short period of time. If you have the habit of turning the key and engaging the starter when the engine is already running, then yes the starter gear and/or flywheel could have bad teeth. But my feeling is that it is only your starter contacts. - Jim

It is possible that you have bad starter armature bearings causing the starter to "drag" If it does this when cold and also hot, it is usually only the contacts. If it does it worse when the starter is hot from sustained running then suspect the armature bearings. When these parts heat-up and expand, then the dragging usually get worse. You may be one of the 10% that needs a starter motor replacement.
@earltuckian13 жыл бұрын
@Crashof2008 I believe the original manufacturer is ND (Nippon Denso) Perhaps your Bosch replacement is inferior to the original model. It seem unusual that it would fail so often.

Hello, Some users have reported that these parts can be obtained from Toyota as well. It seems that auto parts stores are getting away from selling small parts and going into "corporate mode" where inexperienced counter help is the norm and selling you a complete assembly instead of the parts to repair. Another option is to try a company that is an auto-electrical specialist, they might have the parts in stock. If you find the parts, please tell me and I will post your reply, Thank you, Jim
@earltuckian12 жыл бұрын
Our NAPA is locally owned and the staff are very good at sourcing about anything. If you are dealing with a "corporate" NAPA that does not have a machine-shop in-house that repairs and rebuilds starters, generators, carburetors etc., then they will ONLY sell you a starter as they are only "countermen" not actually mechanics. You can buy the parts from Toyota and since my video was made, there now are several sellers on ebay also selling the kits.. Thank you for watching.

@earltuckian13 жыл бұрын
@MrProTechHD - This changing of parts without actually knowing the problem is common, often very expensive and the exact reason almost all auto parts stores do not accept returns on electrical parts. I once experienced a VW dealership which did this as well. (Just start changing parts until the car runs.) All the time charging labor and spare parts at their customer's expense. Of course they are no longer in business.
@earltuckian11 жыл бұрын
My thoughts would be that you have not installed the motor correctly into the mounting area. There is no reason that after only cleaning the contacts, the solenoid-driven gear on the starter would not engage the gear on the back of the engine and turn the engine over. Unless you left out the "plunger" or plunger spring from the starter motor? It seems that you need to first inspect your work.

Earl, Nice film. My buddy has a 1990 Geo Prizm with starting problems. Pep Boys replaced the starter twice (If they can be trusted). Now he is having problems getting it to start on very hot days after using AC. When he turns the key it only clicks when the car is hot. After the car cools, it starts. Any ideas? Thanks. I'm thinking his problem is solenoid, neutral safety switch, or somewhere in the ignition system where metal will expand when hot. However I only work on old us cars.
@earltuckian11 жыл бұрын
There were some problems with the switch in the shifter (if it has an automatic on the floor) have him try starting it in neutral instead of park and that is a simple adjustment. But if it is 'clicking' then probably not that as that will be a dead circuit as it is a safety feature. Otherwise, just like old American cars, it seems to be the armature dragging inside the starter case due to heat expansion, but two new starters seems to negate that theory. I still think it is heat/starter related.

Hi Jim, I have been having trouble getting my 97 corolla to start. It is only happening when it rains. I have been researching that it could be a distributor cap crack, a crack in my starter, or alternator. How do I know which I should be looking at, my distributor cap doesn't appear to have a crack. that is the only peice I can see easily. The engine will sound like it is getting ready to start, but it won't turn over. I have replaced spark plug wires and plugs so I know it isn't due to this.

@MrProTechHD You don't say the mile on your Camry, but this sounds like your problem. If you take the starter off and find this to be the problem, then there is really nothing else you can do as everything else in the system has been changed. The only thing left to suspect would be the ignition switch on the steering column which is a very rare failure.

@earltuckian12 жыл бұрын
Still could be the starter. Try pressing the horn while turning the key. If the horn sound gets weak when applying key load, then you have some current in the starter circuit. If the horn sound almost goes away, check connections on battery terminals and condition of battery. Toyotas are so reliable it is seldom a serious problem unless you go to a "stealership" where they use the common clueless technique of changing parts until the problem eventually is fixed. :( Thanks for the compliment

Sorry for your misfortune. I think if you read through all of the previous comments from all the people who have repaired their own starter, this "not being able to find parts" would seem to be untrue. Seems that maybe in your area, the personnel at the parts stores you dealt with are unwilling to take the time to order these for you or are uninformed/inexperienced. Dan Holloway Since this is what you were working on, I would suspect a short-circuit at your cable connection point. Most likely your plastic insulator is compromised or incorrectly installed.

I have a quick question I have Toyota Supra we are having the same problem where it clicks several times till the starter engages. We changed our starter and it still happens so we noticed the wiring to the starter to the batter is corroded so I'm guessing change the wiring on the battery. What do you think?
@earltuckian9 жыл бұрын
Tweety Aradillas Look closely at the battery terminals. On older Toyotas, it is common for the cable-to-terminal 'clamp' to crack, (or the bolt to pull through the clamp, making it impossible to get completely tightened) As well as 'wire-brush' cleaning the posts on the battery as well as the interior of the clamps. If the bolt has pulled through the clamp, or the clamp itself is stretched-out, then this could be your problem, not a good enough connection at the battery post. You can usually change-out only the post clamp itself, typically, the wires are OK. With this scenario, you have electrical current and things like lights and radio work, but the slightly loose connection won't carry the 'amps' needed to turn the starter motor. - Thank you for watching.
@Tweetyaradillas9 жыл бұрын

what if your problem is a draggy starter? I know its not the battery. would it be the crushes? and can those be replaced?
@earltuckian6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Most likely you have worn-out "shaft end support bearings" and this causes the armature to drop under gravity and drag on the interior of the starter case. Typically the starter will drag more when it is hot from transfer of engine heat. (Starts easier when car has been sitting for several hours, hard to get to restart after being shut off for short period of time) This is because this engine heat transfer into the starter body expands slightly the armature and this makes the clearance even tighter there where it is dragging. Maybe if this previously described hot/cold scenario is the case, you may consider a complete rebuilt starter replacement as this can become a can of worms.. When the armature drags, then you can have some drag-damage to the windings etc.. You many want to check Toyota dealer parts department pricing as well. Sometimes Toyota is cheaper than the auto parts stores on rebuilt items like starters and alternators. It's the installation labor at the dealership that gets killer expensive... And thank you for watching and best regards. Jim
